Slice Print Review: The Cetus 2 3D Printer! Is this the answer to multicolor 3d printin?

Ғылым және технология

Are multi-colored prints possible without creating waste? The Cetus2 is trying to answer that question. This is a review of my experience printing with this machine.

Note: Tiertime does offer a Cetus2 Profile and Machine setting in Ultimaker Cura. However Cura currently does not support any sort of ‘model-painting’ abilities.
Additionally when I talk about slicers during this video, and which slicers are forked versions, I bring up PrusaSlicer but I don't go any further back. PrusaSlicer is in fact a fork of Slic3r and not the seed.

    GoodMorning Sir. I would be interested in a Ender3 coreXY conversion. Or a DIY ender3 voron. Or a Budget Stealthburner like tool head for ender3. Thanks

    All those things you mentioned are awesome projects! It's funny you mentioned all three of them, as I will be making a video on one of those topics, just not quite sure which one yet. I am leaning towards the StealthBurner, but I need to check with some of the people over on my Discord as they are the experts on all the different expansions these printers can take on. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback!

    Is the extruder still selfdestroying? I remember my Up mini had the filament grinding against and through the steppers housing because there was no guidetube or cover. Still mad at them especially because 1 replacement extruder cost me 130 Buck.

    Unfortunately I never got a chance to find out because my mainboard was self-destroying :/ the replacement costs for a lot of their parts seems pricey (looking at their website), but my printer in generally seemed well built. Sounds weird to say that when my mainboard gave up, but it felt like a solid machine.

    “Sometimes self starting” 😂. I assume that is the cloud whoopsie doodle from a week or so ago. Lmaoooo. Watching was a great experience. I love that Leo cannot be bought. But as long as the makers of the Cetus aren’t easily butthurt they just got a lot of good constructive criticism. They are really onto something and if they take your review and input seriously and focus on improving all the shortcomings of this printer I’m sure the v2 or most likely the v5 of this prototype rushed to market may actually sell some printers. The fact that they are trying to cut down on the purging and excessive waste that comes with multicolored 3D printing is something that needs to be improved. There is plenty of improving that needs to be done in that area and if they can do what bambu has not (yet) they may have a chance of surviving in this market though they seem to be about 10years behind everyone else… thanks for the honest review. And hey you may not have a functioning printer for the time you put into this but the price of scrap metal is up so it’s not a total loss 😂

    I wasn't sure if anyone was going to catch that self starting joke 😂 yea their idea is really nice, normally multi color prints out of a single nozzle cause an excessive amount of purge (rightfully so). I wish the slicer was just a little more user friendly obvious. If they open sourced a few of the components that are closed now this printer might be in a better spot.

    @@PrintsLeo3D I saw it blip and by the time my brain picked it up, it was gone. I had to go roll it back and stare at the spot i noticed it happened so I was ready for take two. As soon as I saw what it really says I laughed out loud. I don’t keep my X1C in standby mode so I was one of the lucky ones. If I’m not printing it’s completely offline. Have a good Sunday Leo. Looking forward to the next one. The Qidi MAX 3 looks promising. I can’t wait to see what is out there in the next year or two. It’s an exciting time for the 3D printing world.

    The Cetus 2 will be 300$ on their website. I really like the design. Do you think it’s worth it to replace the extruder with a normal”” one and install a klipper board?

  • @PrintsLeo3D

    @PrintsLeo3D

    8 ай бұрын

    No, I think that would be one of the worst ways to go with this. Bringing any printer over to Klipper will always get my nod of approval, but the unique aspect to this is the hot end, and the way it loads filament to the hot end. If you were to replace that and the board you might as well just buy an inexpensive printer that already has those features and load Klipper onto that. At this point I think the BambuLabs A1 would be the best way to go if multi colored prints is a must for you. If you need a bigger build size than the P1P or P1s and the AMS would probably be the second best. I am going to look into some of the Klipper multi material options (like the carrot feeder), and see how they can compete. Because, as I am sure you know, I am a huge fan of Klipper.

    Isn't it possible to just use a third party slicer, even if it means starting from scratch for the profiles?

  • @PrintsLeo3D

    @PrintsLeo3D

    11 ай бұрын

    Yes... sort of lol Tiertime released a machine and profile for the slicer Cura. Unfortunately right now Cura doesn't offer any ability to 'paint' the models within the slicer. So you would need to find specific models that have been separated by color (hopefully to your liking) and then you could use Cura to slice and print those models.

    @@PrintsLeo3D At least it's something, I mean, I have more faith on Cura to be able to have a paint option than on that slicer to get a lot better. Probably creating a profile from scratch on Prusa/Super/Orca slicer is an option then, at least if you you are experienced with it

  • @PrintsLeo3D

    @PrintsLeo3D

    Hopefully with Cura there may be some update down the road that adds on the ability to paint. The problem I believe with creating a profile from scratch using any other slicer, is the nature that which this printer operates. It's trying to do something no other company is, in their on the fly filament swap, and I believe there are certain scripts or commands that are necessary which would be really hard to port over by yourself. If the developer's had the ability to help in this process it would be a huge boon.

    Looks archaic, feels archaic lol I understand TierTime's need to create their own slicer with trying to do what they are with this printer. Just fell really flat for me in practice.

    Unfortunately I was only able to get the handful of prints you saw in this video. It's a shame too because I was hoping this printer was going to be as good as it was marketed. For me it didn't get there, but that doesn't mean it's a bad printer. This video is a snapshot of my experience with it and how I enjoyed it. Other people may have had better or worse experiences. I would recommend looking around for as much information as you can about this(or any) 3d printer you are interested in.

    Yea you're right, it's funny because it's in the notes of my script but I never mentioned it while filming. I'm going to make an addendum in the description. When I was going over that I was concentrating on the current 'popular' slicers out there so it just slipped my mind, but I appreciate you setting me right! Thanks!

    Dear lord what is that thing... looks like someone's garage experiment but it's a finished product for sale...

  • @PrintsLeo3D

    @PrintsLeo3D

    8 ай бұрын

    Yea it's someone's experiment lol It felt like it had a good idea (less waste material) but never actually got around to accompanying that with a usable printer experience. This was also one of the few printer's to make use of nozzle probing, so it had some unique ideas going on. I just don't think they tied this well enough together to make it worthwhile for the end user. Now that Bambu Labs has released a 4 color printer at or around the same price point, sadly I don't think this printer will ever be viable.

    @@PrintsLeo3D Just looking at the components and build for a few seconds it becomes apparent that it was doodled on a tissue paper and the components were bolted together as an afterthought... no design process at all. I watched your video after my comment and found out the board burned after 4 prints...

    Yeah, I had a pretty rough go with this printer. I hate to condemn a printer based on only my experience, because you never know the board melting could be an isolated incident, but overall this would never be anything I would recommend.
