Sleeping in an SUV: How to Make the Floor FLAT & LEVEL for a Mattress; How to Sleep in a Honda CR-V

Shows how to make the cargo area floor of an SUV flat & level for sleeping. How to sleep in a car, SUV, truck, van, Honda CRV, or other vehicle. How to make a vehicle floor flat and level for placement of a mattress for sleeping in a car, SUV, van, or other vehicle, comfortably.
Demonstrates how a 2017 Honda CR-V has an adjustable cargo area floor in which the cargo area floor can be made flat, and how to use the cargo compartment. The cargo area floor is flat, but it’s not level. The floor slopes downward towards the back of the car. Explains and shows the slope of the floor, and how the floor is not level. Shows how to make the cargo area of an SUV level for sleeping in an SUV by using multiple layers of carpet padding to make the floor level. Shows how to do that and sleep in an SUV with no permanent modifications. Furthermore, no platform is needed. There is no need to build a platform for sleeping. Very easy no-build SUV camping. In this way you can easily make the floor of the cargo area of an SUV flat and level so you can put a foam mattress on it and sleep comfortably in the SUV.
Chapters:
00:00 Intro.
00:14 Overview of flat floor, carpet, and bed in cargo area of CR-V.
01:44 Folding down rear seats and showing cargo area before it’s flat.
02:53 Making the cargo area floor flat by changing the floor position.
04:05 Shows that the flat floor is not level.
05:28 Installing carpet padding to make the cargo area floor level.
08:21 Shows the carpet installed over the carpet padding.
09:15 Shows the foam mattress on the carpet.
10:24 Advantages of the flat floor explained.
11:26 Outro.
Starting with the 2017 model, the CR-V cargo area is flat with no bump or lump or gap when the back seats are folded down (and when the back part of the floor is on the upper adjustment). So, I just put the foam mattress on the cargo area floor. There is a slight slope to the floor, but it's not too bad. If possible, I try to park with the back of the car slightly higher than the front to compensate. That is, I try to park on a slightly downward slope. So, it works without a platform. Avoids having to fill the gaps to flatten the floor, like on cars and SUVs where the back seat does not fold back flat. A platform and permanent modifications are not needed, which is nice if you are just sleeping in the vehicle for SUV camping or car camping. It is a no-build SUV (sport utility vehicle) camper. Use a mattress, such as a foam mattress, tri fold mattress, or any other kind of mattress.
This video demonstrates why 2017 and newer Honda CR-Vs are great for sleeping in, camping in, SUV camping, car camping, SUV life, car life, van life, sleeping at a truck stop, etc. It’s because they already have a flat cargo area, and thus a flat floor. This video shows how to use the CR-V cargo compartment. The cargo floor offers two positions, and can create a smooth floor, which is great for placement of a mattress and bed for sleeping in your SUV, car, vehicle, etc.
So, you don't need a platform with the 2017 to present CRV, i.e., 2017 and newer CRVs. The cargo floor in the back that covers the spare tire has two positions: a lower position, and an upper position. When it's in the upper position it creates a flat, smooth floor with the folded down rear seats. The flat, smooth floor is not quite level and does have a small slope and/or incline. I sleep with my head towards the front, which is the slightly higher end, and I try to park where the back of the car is slightly higher than the front of the car, which levels out the floor. I also use extra layers of the carpet pad toward the back to raise the floor in the back. Older CRVs do not have a flat, level floor inside.
This video refers to my previous video entitled: Before You Sleep in your Car or SUV, WATCH THIS: How to Sleep or Camp in a Honda CR-V for a Van Life
Here is the link to that video: • Before You Sleep in yo...
The video shows how to put a bed & sleep comfortably in a car (2017 Honda CR-V) w/ screens, fans, lights, carpet, padding, DIY camping setup hacks. Watch this before trying to sleep, camp, or live in your car, SUV, van, camper, or RV. Shows 3 inch thick foam mattress, comfortable, cheap, inexpensive, affordable bed with pad in a compact SUV (sport utility vehicle) for van life adventures, explorers, road trips, and campers. Watch this before buying or purchasing a mattress, pad, camping gear, or camping accessories for your car, automobile, truck, or SUV. No tent is needed for car camping, car living, boondocking, overlanding, dry camping, dispersed camping, sleeping at truck stops, or road trips.

To avoid feeling the end of the 3 extra layers, put the under carpet padding the other way around. Small piece first, medium piece on top, larger piece then the longer piece on top.

Better than having to add a platform, but that's still a lot of extra crap just to avoid a very minor slope. A couple of RV levelling blocks would cost about $50 and make all those pieces of foam unnecessary.

My 2016 CR-V folded seats also slope higher towards the front making them about 10 inches higher at the front than the rear of the cargo floor, so you have to build a platform. Having a 2017 would have made a bed in the back so much easier.

great video. may i ask, how tall are you? do you sleep at an angle or straight aligned with car? also, do you get in and out from the side doors or is there a way to get out from the back hatch? thank you!

I am only 5'6" tall, which allows me to sleep straight aligned with the car. The foam mattress is 72" long and just barely fits. I use the side doors; I don't know of a way to open the back hatch from the inside. In fact, sometimes, when I'm sitting in the driver seat, I take my shoes off and then crawl over the center console to the back. It all works great for me because I'm not a large person. But it might be difficult for taller people. At any rate, glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching!

Rather than use various pieces of carpet pad to try to level the floor, wouldn't it be easier to just get a couple short lengths of 2x8 that you place behind the rear wheels and then back onto them? The car wouldn't be level but the bed would. Alternatively, several lengths of 3/4" plywood that you could stack to get the right height for each wheel.

I'm 5'8" and have and have a 2012 crv so there's a few more inches of space in his 17 CRV vs mine because it folds less flat towards the driver's seats end. And I don't have enough room to fully extend my legs which has caused me enough discomfort that it took longer to fall asleep by a significant amount to not being able to fall asleep at all- that was more in the summer or early fall when it's hotter and more humid and less conducive to falling asleep at all- even if I could extend my legs fully. I've moved my legs on a diagonal so my head is ihe right top corner position (viewing from the rear end of the crv's cargo area) and my legs extend to the left bottom corner which gave me a few more inches, but I've estimated in my 2012 design that I'd need a base of 6 more inches so I could fully extend my legs from the Left Top corner where my head is to Bottom Left corner (without diung the diagonal with my legs, which still didn't full work).

I wondered where it would go as well. One might not want to leave it at home, especially if they're using the cargo space for gear while on the move. But it dawned on me, maybe it can be stowed UNDER the floor panel in the space that's created when it's positioned at the higher level??

It is not completely flag which I am still struggle. I even ask sale person at dealership if it's normal or not. This person struggle and say it's normal. Should I remove head on back seat or what?
