Жыл бұрын
@@RabidDogma what were the changes? and why was it so hard to get this amazing comic adapted?
@RabidDogma
Жыл бұрын
@@boot5672 some of the things people complained about were completely superficial, like a character's gender or ethnicity. One particular character being gender-swapped is more pragmatic - without saying which character, it's that DC owns the rights to the original character, and Neil Gaiman specifically created the other one in the comics, so he owns the rights to that character. But apparently, he made the change to change it to the gender-swapped version even before it was brought up that DC owned the original version. Others were either done for the sake of being modern (it's been 20+ years since the comic was out), because it was simply necessary (I can't really say what without spoiling). Sometimes it seems to have simply been Neil Gaiman's own decision (like the one I mentioned before), but he's literally the author so whatever he says goes - if there's anyone I'll ever get that benefit of the doubt to, it's the author. As for why it took so long? The technical ability to tell this story really well in a TV format really wasn't there until the last few years. Also, Neil Gaiman, the author, is HEAVILY involved in the production, like he was with American Gods. He made a miniseries of a novel of his years ago, Neverwhere, then he did American Gods, and now he's able to do Sandman properly. I honestly think that's the entire reason why it took so long.

It's not THAT fringe, it was pretty much the flagship of the the Vertigo brand. It's just that that brand (and Sandman) was primarily of the 90s, even though it had a TON of things spin off from it, and interacted with everything else in Vertigo, like Doom Patrol and Hellblazer/Constantine.

To educate u guys The Endless are a family of beings who appear in American comic books published by DC Comics. The members of the family include Death, Delirium, Desire, Despair, Destiny, Destruction, and Dream aka(Sandman). The Endless were created by Neil Gaiman and first appeared in the comic book series The Sandman. The Endless are a somewhat dysfunctional family of seven siblings who each represent an aspect of life: Dream, Death, Destiny, Despair, Desire, Delirium and Destruction. The Endless are the anthropomorphic representations of powerful natural forces they embody. They regard themselves as a family, referring to each other as siblings and they are known to be the children of the cosmic entities Night and Time. From oldest to youngest they are: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium, who was previously known as Delight. And they are omniversal and are like the third most powerful beings in DC Comics.

Glad you guys are checking this out, really amazing series
Random bit of trivia: The comic series established (retroactively) that the old Golden Age comic book hero The Sandman (a masked vigilante who wore a gas mask and fought criminals with smoke bombs and sleeping gas and fists) was inspired to go out by terrible & prophetic dreams that were caused by Dream’s imprisonment. Another creative team picked up on this and did a long-running noir series set in the 1930s & 40s, with some amazing (if often amazingly weird) art: Sandman Mystery Theater.
This was probably the most critically beloved comic book series of all time. In the original comic that came out in 1989, Dream was trapped for about 70 years. Since they're pushing him getting out to 2022, they're saying he was trapped for over 100. They kept the start date the same because that "sleepy sickness" thing really happened IRL.

VERY EXCITED to see you reacting to this series!
Early Sandman issues have a few references to other DC characters and some appearances (including a great dream sequence with Mr. Miracle on Apokolips). This was all mainline continuity in DC in the 90s, with the Endless showing up or referenced occasionally and references to a certain ruby in a Justice League story a couple years later. But it mostly stands apart and they seem to have taken out most of the DC connections in the show (although there are a couple Easter eggs).

As a tip, The Sandman is known, between many things, for their use of actual history on their stories. As an example, Encephalitis Lethargica was an actual epidemy that started on the early 1930´s, with around a million affected. It´s still a mystery what caused it.

A few non-spoiler details to throw your way if you look back through the comments. So basically, the binding spell from the beginning was targeted at Death, but Death doesn't obey magical law, so it rebounded to the nearest sibling who does, Dream. Also, the "sleepy sickness" they mention, encephalitis lethargica, was a real disease. Became prominent after the Spanish flu pandemic. There was briefly a treatment for it decades ago, but its effects were only temporary. You can learn more about it from the excellent Robin Williams bio-drama Awakenings. We still don't know what caused it or how to treat it properly if it ever returns-because every patient who had it has since died of complications or old age at best. Also, minor Netflix adaption difference-in the graphic novels the capture happened in the 1890s, the Magus's eldest son having died in...Spanish-American War I wanna say? So the graphic novels make it more clear that both world wars, as well as the Holocaust, sleepy sickness, even the cold war, were indirectly caused by Dream being captured. The first issue of The Sandman released in 1989....as cold war tensions were plummeting.
This show is so damn dope, so glad SOMEONE is reacting to it!
