I worked for a circus tent company one summer. We used 3' metal stakes, about 1" diameter to anchor the tent legs to the ground. I drove about 20 of them a day. We had a lot of generic 8lb fiberglass sledge hammers that occasionally broke and needed replacement. However, one previous employee had broken so many that the boss bought a Wilton bash hammer at some point for that specific employee to use. This hammer had almost no green paint left on it, and the collar had been smashed through to the point the internal rebar was visible. The head was still solid and there was no sign of bending or failure of the handle. They are pretty tough.

i used to be be a strongman for a group of gypsy performers about 30 years back, and being 7'7" and 575lbs they had my own custom sledgehammer made for me dubbed "forge breaker", made from a 200lb anvil, they sawed off the spike, and put a solid steel pole through the middle so it looked liike a DnD hammer head, thing could smash just about anything, i even split a few anvils with it, my gimmick was that i was the "blacksmith berserker" and that i was the last living heir of mjolnir. i still have the hammer to this day, and i may be pushing 60, but i can still swing that beast like like a champ

I’m a heavy duty mechanic and I work on equipment and trucks, I got everything up to 16lbs. Personally I think 10lbs is the right size for a sledge hammer, its what I use the most. However, my 16lb is really nice to use on track pins and lots of pins on equipment. When you hit something with a 16lber right with enough speed, it doesn’t always matter if everythings lines up. When you wack something with a 36” 16lber, it does something lol.

I work for a Paving co. in Western Washington as a grade hop and grader operator . We use 10 and 12 pound hammers to drive 10" hubs aka stakes(hard ground hubs break or explode so we sledge pound a 18"steele jackhammer bit to make a usable hole 1st) into the ground as elevation and boarder markers for grade and placing gravel as needed for drainage and proper base slope prepped for paving . Swinging a sledge windmill style all day is a big part of a groundmans job many days , I agree balance is important between heavy enough and too heavy . More weight is helpful sometimes but I prefer my 10 these days , I find the shape and length of handle is most important , Anything used so much needs to be a good fit for the operator as well as the task at hand ideally . Most of us cut and sand our handles as needed . I just bought 2 new hammers both kobalt 10 pounders from lowes 1 standard sledge and 1 with a fat girthy dense wedge and hammerhead together looks real handy , I get to try them out tomorrow.

I had a few carpentry jobs in the late 80's and early 90's after I graduated high school. I bought a 28 ounce, it was tooo heavy to swing all day, so I finally listened to my Dad and got a 22 ounce which was considered light at the time.

CP rail here, swinging sledge hammers almost all day smacking anchors on. Never tried the metal ones, fiberglass ones tend to instantly fail when they break, the wood ones kind of just splinter and you know its done plus the wood one is easily repairable in the field with a jig and jack system we built on our truck. only have used 10 lbs head, would like to try a metal core with rubber one with an 8 lb head one day..

We Gandy dancers used 12 # "Spike Mauls" Narrow faces with one shorter to start the spike and one with a longer and narrower end to finish reaching over the rail to set the spike. Yup! G-G 😓👌⚒🛠

Catus, Looks like I will be demo-ing a concrete patio, in the spring What do you think of the cross or curved ends on some of the newer sledge hammers designs, Like the Dewalt 12lb or the Roughneck Gorilla sledge hammer. Do you think it is worth getting ? I am also debating 10lb or 12lb ?

Bring them to an oil rig and they wont last long... and the wood is best for oil base mud on the handle. The rubber is slick AF! All we use is 12 & 16 & a few 20's lbs'ers...

My shoulders are nearly gone. I do best with a 2 pounder for small stuff and a 6 pounder for larger 2 hand jobs. Even in my youth, a 16 was too much for me. I did manage 10 or 12 pounders ok back then. A 20 would be totally out of my league.

@@orenges no one will really stop you at first unless you're being hella suspicious, too But if you're using it as a tool, you shouldn't fear it at all. You see, as long as you handle it right, you will be able to spend hours and hours demolishing with little effort Your legs can be in danger, but only if you have a shitty stance, otherwise it's harmless (still, wear some glasses, pieces of stone, brick, concrete or whatever you're destroying will come fliying towards you, I've learnt that the hard way)
