    It's refreshing to hear people like Zizek. Being Lebanese, I see a lot of deformities in the way the west portrays the Middle East, it is hard to decrypt middle eastern political reality whilst in the west which is why the media cannot be trusted but even worse the media here is not even reliable anymore since the protests started.

    In the context of the region of Middle East, Iran is actually the most progressive side you could support. Having an alliance of Saudi Arabia, Israel and the US dead set on destroying their influence is enough proof, but there is many more. Iranian people are very well read and educated.

This isnt hyperbole the analogy is accurate given the blending of stolen leftist 'anti-imperial' ideas and strict anti-modernism/worship of traditional order. Persian Pride World Wide! The 13th century was indeed an important moment in history for the revival of the Persian civilization where Khorasan - modern day Afghanistan - was the epicenter of it. This was also known as the Persian Renaissance where the Shahnama of Ferdawsi was completed in the historical place, Ghazni, after roughly 25 years. Hadn't it been for the amazing work of the Persian universal man, Ferdawsi, the Persian language would have largely disappeared. An Egyptian professor was right when he noted: the ancient Egyptian language could not survive as we did not have our own Shahnama Ferdawsi. Thank you Slavoj Zizek. Love to Iran, Khorasan (Afghanistan), Tajikistan and Uzbekistan (Bukharah and Samarqand in particular).

    So right at 4:28. Three neighbouring countries: A, B, and C. They become embroiled in some sort of tension or conflict that is strictly regional. Country A invades Country B for its oil or some other resource, Country C comes to the aid of B and they push back A. It's a relatively obvious that A is at fault, the victim B and its ally C are victorious, and due to the strain of the war effort, A's government is on the brink of collapse-. _However,_ a superpower bloc is allied with A's leadership and will use its vast resources to prop it up, prolonging the conflict. A separate power bloc has a vested interest in the oil or resources that started the conflict _and_ were covertly behind the uprising among A's populace following the military defeat in an attempt to install a client regime that's willing to play ball. A regional conflict has turned into a global hotspot and potential source of wider conflict due to its connection to the global community and tangled alliances. These complicated relationships are unrelated to morality. A nation that, for the most part, has been a force for good globally and historically can be just as easily aligned with a regional warmonger as the victim because the sole determining factor is securing resources. They do what they want because the three regional countries are bit-players and then simply apply an ideological bandaid for justification.

    Ideas of socialism and marxism entered the arena of social and political life in Iran right after Bolsovic revoloution of 1917. Right after 1917 revoloution of Russia, with the support of Bolsovic party and direct contact with Lenin the northern province of Gilan under the leadership of a coalition of communist and nationalist forces announced the cedition of Gilan from Iran, as an independent socialist republic, only to be defeated and demolished when Lenin stopped his support after his geopolitical agreements with Reza Shah. Perhaps Iran is the only country in middle East that the idea of socialism and philosophy of Marxism is extemely popular among intellectuals and sections of working class. During 1980s an estimated 10,000 Leftist political dissident , religious and communists were murdered or executed by islamic forces of Khomeini regime.

    Great speech! A few points: Egypt, Israel, and Saudi used to collaborate well before because of Shah's policies and his role in the Middle East region. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the ayatollah's simply destroyed everything by their backword policies. Green Movement in 2009 was a good opportunity for Iranian people to announce their dissatisfactions with the system, but it did not result in a sustainable change, because it was defined within the Islamic Republic framework. People still trusted the system and hoped for a better option for presidency. They did not know that to improve the situation, there is no way but changing the political structure. Now, they know. Just see the recent movements (women, workers, teachers,...).

When Christians and Jews fled the muslim nations of the middle east and around the mediterranean sea, they came to nations that let them work and live instead of putting them into camps. Why is this guy such a superstar on the left? He's really not saying anything particularly interesting, anyone with a book or two on the region and an al-Monitor account already knows all this. He brings mild regional knowledge and pairs it with an incredible batshit take. Anyone who considers a nuclear Iran (retracted opinion or not) to be a worthy goal doesn't understand the region. Iran isn't the noble underdog that needs protection, they're a theocratic regime with a gradual swell of internal dissent. We need to prevent the IRGC from gaining too much strength (aka attaining nuclear power), but we also need to allow democratic reform to take its course.

  • @karimrashidpour9378

    @karimrashidpour9378

    I think you should study deeply Zizek. Zizek is not actually a superstar of the left. He is quite disliked by many leftists. But in this case, I partially agree with you. Iran having nuclear weapons may not be the best-case scenario. But this demonization of Iran is still extremely unfair considering all the horrible deeds and human rights violations done by Saudi Arabia. So, why media do not vocally condemn Saudi's actions in Yemen? What about Khashoggi? What about all the laws against women rights? Even if there are few articles and controversies regarding these topics, there is never serious talk about this. But lets also not forget that Saudi is a monarchy while in Iran they still hold elections...which basically means that Saudi is much more of a dictatorship than Iran. And as the last point, I want to criticise your final sentence. What do you mean "allow democratic reform to take its course". You are assuming that democracy is an inevitable and certain outcome of political evolution, but it is not always the case. And again, the rhetoric that democratic reform should be allowed, is very close to the rhetoric that democratic reforms should push, which basically created all the modern problems with Egypt military taking power or Iraq's government weakness. When people think that democracy is the only solution, without understanding the country's historical and cultural background, they tend to create disasters

  • @karimrashidpour9378

    @karimrashidpour9378

    3 жыл бұрын

    And one last point...Zizek is not actually saying he perfectly knows the geopolitical implications of the modern middle east. He admits he lacks deep knowledge regarding this. But his argument is revolving more on the twisting of the images done by the media and by the US for their agenda. Do you honestly believe that the US is doing all the things they are doing to promote democracy? I hope not because that would be extremely naive

  • @econometrics469

    @econometrics469

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@karimrashidpour9378 I'm not responding to most of that because we mostly agree. But democratization in Egypt wasn't through the process of reform, it was basically a revolution, which naturally causes social upheaval. Iran is theocratic, and the IRGC is dominant, but they do allow elections like you said. When I say that democratic reform should be allowed to happen I'm talking about the work of people like Rouhani, Javad Zariff, the Middle Eastern universities like al-Qud hosting forums and changing the minds of young people who will go on to be political movers. I think I recently read that 70% of the Iranian population is under 30 (which when connected to social media means they're likely falling in with the progressive youth of today, I have Iraqi friends who have done just that, advocating for everything from separation of church... to veganism lol). Iran has a chance for radical (and peaceful) reform, but anyone paying attention to Iranian politics knows that the Revolutionary Guard would be more brutal if they had the security provided by nukes. In my opinion, anyone suggesting they out to have one (Zizek included) out to refrain from commenting on the region's politics. He's right about the Saudis being worse though, MBS is a vomitous person (although he has responded recently to popular pressure, so we'll see what happens in the coming years)
