I've been asked to speak out about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Though I don't consider myself qualified to talk about it, I do want to support the cause, so here's what came out of my mouth.
Check out the following videos, which I found extremely informative:

Although you are "not qualified" to discuss the geopolitical intricacies of the invasion, people do look to you for some semblance of sense in a world that often doesn't make sense. Your channel is one of the most grounded channels around and folks can relate to you and the topics. It is through this that, even making this kind of video, you can have influence and provide some semblance of order through the chaotic miasma emanating from the whole situation. Thanks!

But, @Let’s-go-Brandon, if you are lambasting western politicians for being too "weak and corrupt" to do more for Ukraine, you need to realise that NATO countries simply CANNOT get militarily involved. That rabid, demented, effed up, s#!t-for-brains animal, Vladamned Putrid has threatened global thermonuclear war if any NATO country gets involved. No one wants that, and I would think that Ukrainians would want it least of all, right now. And I believe that animal, Putrid, is rabidly crazy enough to do it, too. Once that inhuman evil thing is captured and brought to justice, it needs to be put down by placing it in a lead-lined cell with a few pounds of radioactive plutonium or uranium, and left there to rot. After all, that's what that thing is threatening for the whole world.

Her husband and son are still in Mariupol and she has not heard from them in five days. She has not idea what has happened to her family. This is what she wrote to me. Today we went to a friend’s apartment to eat and bake bread. They started shooting hard, so the nine-story building in which we were shaking. We jumped out and began to run to the shelter. the wall of the house fell. There was an explosion, while we were running there was another explosion. We managed to run to the shelter. Everything feels so surrealistic right now. As a Swede I cant even begin to imagine the horrors that occurs down in Ukraine. Althou I live a few hours away, I would lie If I said I were not scared of the situation. The heavy stress I can sometimes feel right before sleep about this since I have kids myself, and what I would do if putin made his threats to my country real, is unthinkable. Then I think of all the poor kids and families down there who tries to survive this madness already, makes my heart almost stop sometimes. Im extremely glad that so many countries changed their convention and actually sent military aid down there. Tens of thousands of anti-armor weaponry and anti-air missiles has already been sent from countries that normally doesnt allow it. the EU changed their whole convention of not supporting with military aid, and actually bought weapons to give the defense of Ukraine. The silver lining to all this madness is that the majority of the world has gathered together like never seen before, trying to support as much as they can, without trying to start a global nuclear war. I hope this ends with some russians in the right place, gives that psychopath a lethal injection, be it lead or poison, so this surrealistic nightmare can finally stop. Sláva ukrajině! 💙💙💙 💛💛💛

Yes... the whole world. With some terrifying exceptions. China being my worst fear. This is just child's play compared to what will happen down the line with China regarding Taiwan. If they were to successfully take over Taiwan, they will not stop there. Japan and South Korea Korea be next. Judging by the lack of military response (rightfully so), Taiwan will probably have to defend itself much like Ukraine, as it too, is not part of NATO. China will have to make that kind of move before we have completed decarbonization just to make sure they will have leverage. I hope we will pay attention to this problem more so than we did regarding Ukraine...

They may be authoritarian, but that claim needs to be bracketed with $ symbols. They are making note of the $ cost to the economy these sanctions are bringing to Russia. China is a rather fragile giant, with their economy spread pretty thin. I imagine such wreckage as the sanctions will produce are more than they themselves are willing to do. The sheer size and population of China means they are always rebalancing some sector of their society. They keep their neighbors nervous but they seldom make too much effort at a real invasion. Russia exports mainly fossil fuels, and that's gold, even at black market prices. But China sells everything, everywhere, and cutting them off from the western $$$ ruin them as a superpower. Here in Czechia, just 2 borderlines from Ukraine, and being "post-soviet" state, we look on russian invasion with "Not again!" thought… Ukraine workers in Czechia and "Czech citizens of Ukraine origin" are pulling their families to Czechia, resulting in a huge wave of refugees - however due to closeness of our nations and culture, there is strong public will to engage in helping activities on all levels… Immigration and Foreign Police are running partially 24/7, myself I have 8 shifts behind me and at least 3 before me, till free day… Maybe longer, since my higher ability to understand languages may still be needed despite all that volunteer translators… Also, despite NATO can't officially storm in, guns blazing, there is no problem in sending in tons of ammunition. There is no problem in private cyber warfare. There is no problem in paying 50% wages for Ukrainians who went on "war holidays". And while it is illegal for EU citizen to fight for UA army, it's OK to fight in "somewhat independent" anti-russian guerrilla…

Your qualification is, that you are known around the world and you are known to dig deep into topics to provide us with informational videos. And no, Putin is not like an abusive friend, he is more like a revengeful ex, who never got over the end of the Soviet Union. He will pay for this and let's hope, that the people of Ukraine and Russia don't have to suffer too much. As the Russians are affected too, when we basically try to shut down their economy. Let us not forget the brave Russians who take to the streets to protest this war and who risk getting arrested, thrown into jail or fined for these protests.

I was waiting for this video for days. I was really curious about what you were going to say. And I was not disappointed at all. I think that it is inspiring in its own way, that you are brave enough to say that you're unqualified to have a clear opinion, therefore you just ensure the viewers about your solidarity, sympathy, and condolences. It's ok, not to be an expert. The world is full of football coaches / sport experts, epidemiologists since early 2020, now we have military and geopolitics experts too. Everybody is talking about this situation right now, and one might implicitly feel the pressure to form and express an opinion, and they do. And it might lead to unnecessary debates/conflicts, cause the arguments are based on vague, blurry information. Praise Ukraine, stay safe there, people ! 💛💙

In the 1990s I got to know a man from China. There was no secret that he was part of the Chinese military on a sort of exchange mission to the US. I was a kid at the time so I won't pretend to know all the political ins and outs for why/how he was here, but I know he was fascinated by our culture, was very happy to be able to attend church, but made no bones about the US and China being at odds with each other, and if push came to shove he would happily go back and fight the US for his country. But as I got to talking with him more in high school I'll always remember a conversation we had where he basically said to remember that all wars are about resources, and with the rise of computers the only war worth fighting for was energy, because with enough energy and computers you can do anything. This was the mid 90s, and I'm kind of blown away at how far ahead that view was at the time. It may put computers on a bit more of a pedistal then they diserve, but it shaped my understanding of conflict a lot. Anywho, it makes me think of things always from an energy perspective. Iraq and Afghanistan were about having a large active presence to stabilize energy costs in the middle east. Our leaving Afghanistan doesn't mean we were giving up on the Afghanistan people, it meant that we no longer saw middle east turmoil as a direct threat to energy supply. Which I understand is a super awful and jaded view, and I am not saying that I think it is right, I am just saying that is the national motive. At any rate. The US may be short on oil, but we have a lot of natural gas and coal. Enough that we could run ourselves for the better part of a century, all sitting under our national parks system. Protected from drilling to keep things pristine... Until such a time comes that we really need a lot of coal and natural gas. Instead, our efforts in the world are not to control oil, but to make sure it flows (the spice must flow!) and economic prosperity can continue... Specifically for our benefit, but also for the world at large as well as cheap abundant energy allows for growing happy people. Again, not my personal view, but lines up well with history. Russia also has huge reserves of coal, oil, and natural gas. They are very much a petrol state, but they also don't tap the vast bulk of their stores. They are playing at the same game as the US of trying to leave their own reserves alone while the world uses what they have, because if Russia (or the US) becomes the last viable supplier of energy to the world 100 years from now, then it ensures their ability to remain a super power. Global warming be damned, if we are all living in domes on an otherwise uninhabitable planet, we are still going to need power, and if the ecology is F'ed anyelways, then the fossil fuels will keep everything moving. Ukraine fits into all of this because they have some of the largest recently discovered large oil and natural gas deposits on the planet, and Russia wants it. Even if they take it at a loss today, even if it makes things hard for the next 20 years, 50-100 years down the road as the rest of the world starts of run out, Russia will still be sitting on a lot. Mostly because they Wil have taken it and drained all their neighbors dry first. Denazifying Ukraine is rediculous. Reunification is rediculous. Fear of a nato attack when nato would be hard pressed to ever be an aggressor is rediculous. They just want to move in, drain them dry, and then they can have independence if they want, Russia really doesn't care. But this is where it sucks. If Russia wins, they will drain the oil. If Russia gets only a partial victory, then they drain what they can, and push the boarder back more in 10 years. If Ukraine wins and gets the protection of the EU and Nato as they so rightfully diserve, then Ukraine will drill their own oil which they haven't been able to do yet because of Russias meddling. And to be fair, the oil under Ukraine is one of their best assets to help them grow quickly and rebuild, and it is their call to use their natural resources the way they see fit. But it will still be a new major player on the market keeping prices low longer, and putting off the transition to nuclear and renewable energy. This is why fusion tech is important. This is why nuclear, hydro, solar, and wind are so important. I'm not so nieve to think we will ever get rid of fossil fuels. I get we will need some form of active ccs to get our atmospheric carbon levels back down. But renewable tech and nuclear are important because it brings more viable energy sources to the market. If there is a diverse grid, then no single monopoly on energy production can happen. Oil prices stay low, and with low oil value there is less need for conflict over it. All future wars are about energy. If we can electrify everything, and have a lot of energy sources, then there is little need to fight over any single resource. This is why sanctions on Russia and higher fuels costs are good. It means more world adoption of renewables on a shorter timeline. It means less trade of energy and more independence for every country. It means less crap like what Russia is trying to pull so the world can live in peace. It is important.

He's still wrong on computers being the key to glory. Firstly, because _many_ things can't be done with computers & secondly because you still need resources to create those computers & everything else for that matter. And the infrastructure costs & needs for renewable everything are huge. You can't force that timeline to happen sooner than it would naturally without massive social upheaval. It's a good aim to shoot for but there's a progression to everything. Force that & the results are rarely good. Really, it's a bitter pill to swallow, but the best thing for the planet & the people on it is _less people._

Even if this does happen. AND I for one really hope it does. WE ALL still lose. Already several European Countries have stated that they will increase their Military budgets as a response. Understandable. Inevitable. But that is money that could have gone to Infrastructure. Renewables. Healthcare. The move towards "Net-Zero" will be slowed or stalled. That can only be a bad thing. I hope that it acts as a wake up call for countries to wean themselves off Russian Gas and oil. I hope it causes more people to want to invest in local energy, particularly renewables. But I am doubtful.

Well said, Joe. I'm not a content creator like yourself, though you do inspire me to consider it, maybe someday. Amongst those who know me, both near and far, I'm kind of the "Answers with Joe" guy for them and their random curiosities because I'm fairly well studied across a pretty large range of diverse topics. But sometimes, like now, the only answer is "I don't know." I've been telling everyone that I can't give them the answers they want, I can only share how I FEEL. And I guess that's the real point of what I'm saying... sometimes emotion is just as important as information. Empathy is a very powerful driving force amongst us hairless apes. It would give me nightmares to think about a world where no one cared about the horrific situation in Ukraine. I can only speak for myself when I say thank you for being open, honest, and humble about your feelings and lack of knowledge like many of the rest of us. I have close friends from Kyiv who immigrated from there to here where I live in the US. They say "key ev" *NOT* "keev”. These are people who are also quick to point out (as I've been corrected on) that they are _Ukrainians_ NOT _Russian._ They owned a very well-known & busy Ukrainian & Russian deli here, so for the couple years that they were running that, I was around many immigrant Ukrainians & Russians almost every day. Never once did I hear "Keev". The "Keev" pronunciation is apparently a new designation, primarily said by Americans as a political statement. I even clarified this with my friend recently when I kept hearing it & she said _"Keev is wrong"_ basically. All that said, I hope they come out of this intact & that we don't end up in WW3. This whole thing has benefited no one.

I completely agree with the “key-ev” pronunciation. Both sets of my grandparents moved to the US from Ukraine when both of my parents were very young. I also have a lot of extended family in the Ukraine, and I have NEVER heard them say “keev”. According to my family, this whole “keev” thing started recently due to Russia’s bullcrappery with the annexing of Crimea. No Ukrainian I have ever spoke with knows where or why this change came about, but regardless, it is not to original pronunciation.

At 73 my frustration with the amazing short-sightedness of some people is almost impossible to express. There are reasons for the establishment of such organizations as NATO, the UN, and the EU. Growing up when the Cold War was a real thing. The need for forums for countries to meet and work to avoid war is obvious. The reasons for alliances such as NATO were obvious. The benefits of trade agreements as the EU created were readily apparent. In all three cases the benefits became assumed, people either forgot why they were created (witness BREXIT) or had not lived through the times when the reasons for such arrangements were so obvious. It is similar to hearing people argue against inoculations having grown up in an era when the benefits were assumed to be somehow inevitable. Only people who never had friends who contracted polio or even some crippling childhood disease could think inoculations are somehow optional. So here we are and the reasons for NATO are now apparent. Some of the truest words ever spoken were "What we learn from history is we do not learn from history." Banking regulations were relaxed because somehow people were supposed to have changed, and then we had the crash of 2008 because stupidity is eternal and the reasons for regulations were real. History is indeed a wheel. The reason the same things keep happening is we keep going in circles and the reforms and measures taken to avoid problems are abandoned, and the problems they addressed arise again. Suddenly Finland and Sweden see why their freeloading on the back of NATO was not necessarily wise. People who crave authoritarian control can now see where that inevitably leads. American isolationism never worked because we do not have the choice to withdraw from the world, yet there are those who think we can withdraw without consequence. There are always consequences. I wish I feel better now, but when you see the price of wavering vigilance, it is a very high price indeed. Age does not necessarily impart wisdom, but it absolutely imparts experience.

Or how about sanctioning Americans for their governments support of genocides in Somalia, Yemen and Palestine? You know, because it's necessary. If your upset with what Putin is doing, void of any context by yourself, then you should be absolutely furious with the actions of the U.S. around the globe. And if you're not aware, Ukraine has been a puppet government of the U.S. since 2014, after the U.S. funded, orchestrated and supported the coup that ousted Ukraine's actual democratically elected president and installed their own government. See Victoria Nuland for details. As a result of this coup, the neo-nazi factions in Ukraine came to power and have been incorporated into the U.S./Ukrainian government and political body. See the Azov battalion and C14. Maybe research the "May Day BBQ". This is not to exonerate Putin for his actions, but the U.S. has been backing him into a corner for decades. I'm sure for many it's a case of "Hmmm, I wonder what Joe Scott thinks about this?". I think the citizens of every country have a misunderstanding of how the citizens of every other country view them, and how we all are connected (or not connected). Being educated on well rounded topics is one way everyone in the world can open their world view. For instance, I hate math, I don't understand science, and I probably never will be a scientist. But I watch those topics and try to open my mind and let some stuff drop in. Your channel is one of those, just due to the way you explain things with reason and fairly unbiased. People who live in places who have to have biases to survive may not understand if every other person in the world does not very vocally express their views on absolutely everything. As always, the citizens are the ones who suffer for everything, and we're all citizens of somewhere. I am glad to know what you think, but I watch your videos for specific topics. I guess one good reason to express any information you have on world events is that it can place a time stamp on your creations. Thanks for sharing, your subscribers know you're not a dick.

If you want to complicate things further, UKRAINE actually means "border lands", not in Ukrainian, but in an older Russian dialect... hence the "The Ukraine" under Soviet rule... So there's that...

Amazing you took this on. I too have been clueless about the history and geography and been watching all the news to get caught up and educate myself. I love your honest view of one person trying to absorb and figure out what is going on. You have added pressure being a public figure and trying to navigate the comments. I really feel your anguish. You look tired. Step back if you can, you are a hero. And just a small nerdy note, I am hard of hearing and hear ok but lip read some. Your video and audio is always slightly off. Maybe that can be a lighter subject for another time, how our senses adapt and we are not always aware of it. I really miss a lot when i cant see people speak, I am like "what was that"? and "say that again". We all love you Joe, keep doing what you do!

I'm Ukrainian and it feels like everyday someone at work wants a soundbite from me on what I think. The problem is the situation isn't as simple as "Putin bad", even though I have no love for the guy and want him out of my country. Both the US and Russian have been meddling behind the scenes there for decades and Ukrainians have suffered for it.

As heartbreaking as this is, we have to consider the potential of nuclear war if we have boots on the ground or a no fly zone over Ukraine. Putin is wrong. Ukraine needs help. Let's not destroy the world with good intentions.

Luckily, almost nobody (you always have some lunatics calling for war but they're a small minority) here in Europe thinks it's a good idea to get NATO involved. Not only would it trigger WW3, it would also give Putin justification for going all out.

What is heartbreaking is that Ukraine want us to help with air support and we cannot because of the risk of nuclear war and wider conflict (think WWIII). I know that if the world could step in and help, we would. But the risk to all of humanity is just too great. In my opinion, we're at the closest point to nuclear conflict than at any time since 1962. If Putin thinks that any of the western countries are involved directly, he *will* use nukes. He's a cold calculating psychopath and he's using our fear of this against us all. He knows exactly what he's doing and he doesn't care. The entire situation is so unjust and heartbreaking. I cannot believe the atrocities Putin will sink to. I also can't believe how strong Ukraine is in the face of such unimaginable force. I'm proud of them and so profoundly sad for them. The injustice of this is so wrenching. I find myself for the first time truly angry at Russia's 'leader' or should I say dictator. I grew up during the Cold War, but I was a kid, so I didn't understand it then. Now to be back under nuclear threat again and see this horrible injustice and all the people suffering it just makes me so mad! How can Putin do this? I blame him. I know there are people in Russia that also stand with Ukraine and risk jail or death to protest this atrocity. I thought the world had moved past all this. I was wrong. With all my heart, I hope for Ukraine to prevail.

When this all started i have to admit i didn't feel bad for Ukraine, because the last information i knew was that child pornography was legal in Ukraine. I only recently found out that in 2018 they finally outlawed child pornography. My mind was set on the idea that any country that legally allows child pornography to happen SHOULD burn to the ground. Glad to see it was changed and maybe some of the kids there are safer now.
