I've done this before being taken up by the long line and it was FUN!!! Only difference was is that I wasn't strapped to a safety harness. I was holding on to a 250' longline and my feet were between the rungs of the hook. It was at the end of the day of helicopter logging. The the guy you call a hooker hooks up logs to the hook that's suspended 250' down opposite of the helicopter. We were on a very steep hill high in the mountains. The original plan was to have the helicopter land and we would get in and be flown out to the landing but it was too steep for the helicopter to land so plan B was to get on the hook and ride out.

Experience plays the main factor. There are pilots out there who were lucky enough to start early in their careers, and built a lot of time doing this type of work(precision long line) who could probably strap themselves into a S-64 and have no problem? I know one hydro pilot in his late 40’s with over 10K hours, who could put anyone to shame with a 100ft long line, but would much rather fly a light helicopter(AS-350) single pilot, than a heavy with a big crew.
