Major one for me to stick with Sky Q is when I record the boxing from the states I know Sunday morning it's ready to go...not sure if it'll be on the sky server straight away.

My biggest concern by far with Stream is the quality of the hardware. Some, like you from the sound it, have no issues at all. Others suffer a nightmare of Wi-Fi connection issues, remotes not working, adverts on a never ending loop, programmes refusing to play and that’s just the ones I remember off the top of my head. I would love it. It’s exactly what I want, but because my partner wouldn’t know how to solve any issues I don’t dare take the risk, so my option is stick with reliable Sky Q or go down the Apple TV plus TV launcher route. Sky Q is winning at the moment until it inevitably gets too expensive.

My worry with Stream is the wifi connection, we don't have the best at the moment and even with Q it can be very laggy. We may have to hard wire. Also we have had the Q boxes replaced 3 times in the last year. Even this one is starting to sound like a jet engine taking off sometimes.....

Same. I am well known for recording whole entire seasons of things and watching them a year or two later when I've wrapped something else up. I don't see how this would work with sky stream. I would really miss the recording feature.

Ive switched to sky stream and it was a big mistake. Sky Q is way better the following reasons: 1) Better picture quality , Stream is exactly that streamed, so you get compression issues, its very noticeable in blacks where they get washed out on Stream compared to the satellite feed. 2) The ability to record, especially sport. So for example when sold Stream, i was told i could catch on a golf feed immediately after its finished....wrong, many sports programmes are not available for up to 24 hours after they've finished. And often if you hit 'watch from start' halfway through a broadcast, theres a bug whereby when the live broadcast ends, so will your feed even if you havent caught up. 3) Sky stream is buggy, glitchy and the hardware seems way underpowered for what it needs to do. There's also some settings in Q thats not available in Stream. The big one for example is Q has 8 bit UHD or 10 bit UHD HDR so if you have an older 4K TV you can still get great quality with the 8 bit setting as its not reliant on having HLG support. With stream there's only a UHD HDR setting, so if you have an older TV you'll get a dull washed out picture in 4K 4) If you're internet is down with Stream, then that's no tv for you. Ive had 4 days of down internet service in the 12 months of owning stream and that literally means no TV. Live TV on Q would be unaffected.

So helpful, thanks for this! I was sold sky stream and the sales person actually told me you could record on it. Clearly, it's not true. So I will be switching my package to sky q as it hasn't arrived yet.

For me Sky Q. Here is the reason why 1. Low delay 2. Recording function 3. Even though satellite dishes are ugly, it gives high bitrate, and crystal clear picture all the time.... But when it comes to all. Buy that equipment that is right for you. For me is it Sky Q. Running Sky Q 4K through Projector. And Onkyo THX amplifier system

the reason their sky q box was only giving giving them HD option & not UHD / 4K could be for the simple reason that they don’t want to pay the extra £8 a month for UHD 🤔

Is it a 4k uhd box as sky used to sell sky q in 1080p years ago

Sorry to ask again...IM moving from sky q (box) after 18 years in November but before I take the plunge I have got multiple films on the sky store which are purchased.Can I acces these on sky stream and are they in hd/4k if I take the very basic stream offering.

Hi Steve, so u use Apple TV along side stream? Or as a replacement box? I changed from q to stream and it’s great but I find it a bit laggy when navigating and opening apps. Considering replacing it with the Apple TV box, what’d u think?

I use both in all fairness but I do find I am using my Apple TV with Now TV and the TV launcher more than I do sky TV.

Probably you have a slow wifi signal? You should update your home network with signal repeaters, a new router or more preferably a mesh network!

There were certain sky q box models which were limited to 1080p and didnt support 4k, that would explain the 1080p output on that Q box

The biggest difference is adverts. When you record, you can skip the adverts. With stream, you’re stuck with the ADs.

Is the Sky Q box one of the first released as they weren’t 4k unless it was a 1TB box

When I took out Sky Q it was offered in two flavours, Skq Q and Sky Q Silver.....I have the silver which gave me 4K UHD and multi-room ability, plus the nicer remote. From the video we can see the set top box is missing the silver accent and has the more basic remote (which is also used for Multiscreen), hence this box does NOT support 4K....hope that helps @ratemytech.

Was it the HDMI cable that was the problem with the box being stuck on 1080p? Curious 😊 or was that box the 1 tb box? They don’t do Hudson as far as I know.

Also looks like it was the more basic 1TB box which had the basic remote and no silver accent on the set-top box. Those ones did not support UHD. @@RateMyTech

Hi Steve, great post, loads of top info! Reached the end of my Q contract recently, have just boxed up the returning tech and have ordered Stream to give it a try, contract free ATM. Just one question, should I have added the ad skip feature as the advisor never mentioned it at the time. Can’t go back to sitting through all that nonsense, don’t have the patience anymore! 😂

I have a large tree now interfering with my sky satellite signal , i end up watching tv through the apps on the Q box so sky stream is the way forward for me , only thing is my wife loves to record a lot during the day whilst we are at work so is absolutely evey program available on a play list ? For example Home and Away ? or EastEnders ? Cheers

Great video as always Steve. I had Sky Q for years and it was thanks to some of your previous videos on Sky Stream that I decided to take the plunge and switch to Sky Stream. Had Sky Stream since the start of the year and me and my wife absolutely love it. We don't miss the record function and love the playlist feature. We have it hooked up to a LG OLED TV and picture looks amazing. We initially switched as we was renovating the living room and to move the TV across the room would've resulted in horrible cables trailing around the skirting boards so was a no brainer for us. My mum has Sky Q and feels dated whenever I go round and use the TV.

When I had Sky Q I found that I was using the apps built into my LG TV rather than using the apps in sky Q. Now I use each app through Sky Stream and its smooth and just works. I think it ultimately depends on what you watch, if it's only the main terrestrial + Sky channels then yes Stream is absolutely fine, as you can find just about anything on catch-up services. But the whole point of satellite tv is that you get a feed of some obscure and unknown channels which some of us do watch from time to time, and for those you really need a physical hard disk drive to be able to record from.

What kind of Tower speakers are you running? They certainly do look the business especially next to your klipsch sub (12" perhaps)

Had the same issue when I first hooked up my Sky Q box. The TV needed its HDMI mode changing from HDMI 1.4 to HDMI 2.0. Once I toggled the option, I had the 2160p setting.

You need to change the 1080p setting to 8 or 10 bit depending on whether your TV has a 8 or 10 bit panel.

How does the playlist feature on SKY Stream for following football and F1? Does the playlist add races/games automatically for watching when they’ve finished broadcasting live?

I suspect your mate wasn't paying for UHD. I have sky Q and a Sony OLED and it works fine. I'm considering the stream - if it recorded I would definitely go for it but I sometimes watch stuff 6-12 months after I've recorded it and itvX doesn't keep stuff that long. Maybe I should change my viewing habits. Small box and no dish would be good. Thanks for the review.

I did see you have to pay extra for 4k on the Sky website so I think he didn't want that option, which is fair enough as it's a decent amount extra for 4k

Not sure what was going on with that Sky Q box but if you are paying for 4K and not getting 4K then stop paying for it. I would check the vision and sound settings and the HDMI digital plus setting. I have Sky Q myself and get 4K so no problem but the thing i like most is that if i lose internet connection I will be still watching TV and will only lose the internet apps but anything i have recorded i will still be able to watch like normal. I do not like being completely reliant on an internet connection tbh and this is why i like physical media like vinyl records DVD, Blu Ray etc.

Question... Playlist. Can you put any program on playlist? And it saves to the sky cloud servers for a later watch?

@STEMB0B no not at all it is basically a place holder all programs are stored on the channels servers. Like itv or bbc iPlayer

Try a different HDMI port, I found that on my Sony Bravia that they dedicated one HDMI port to allow the 2.2 eArc etc. that was HDMI 2 on my unit. And when I did that I then had the option for 2160p HDR on my Sky Q box.

And the Sopranos wasn't made in 4k or broadcast in 4K standard at just it was probably 720p so that's down to how good the processing is in your TV that improves the quality of the picture

Sky q has the ability to download catch up and on demand for watching offline, which kind of creates a playlist of sorts over time, not the exact same but again if the internet goes down, could be better for some 👍🏻

For the Sky Q does it require 2 coax wall plates?

I think with playlists once the “live” programme has finished you need to wait for the programme to be loaded to the cloud before you can watch it on Sky Stream. That’s annoying because ifI have watched the evening football match and then want to watch a programme shown earlier that evening that’s already finished but is not yet available to stream. Not sure how long it takes for the show to be loaded to the cloud so it can be watched on Sky Stream? Obviously with Sky Q I can watch the programme shown earlier immediately after the football has finished.

On somethings I think but not everything and that is now starting to change as people want to watch what they want when they want

On TV's, 2k is referring to 1920 x 1080 (1080p), whereas 4k refers to 3840 x 2160 (2160p). My guess is that your friends don't have a Sky UHD subscription so the Sky Box ignores the higher resolution.

Hi Steve I think that might be a 1tb sky Q box because back in the year when sky q was launched you had the sky q 1tb box and the 2tb box the 1tb box can only do full hd not 4K the sky q 2tb box, which was in silver at the bottom, can do 4K. Then in 2020 Sky made a new sky q box that allowed 4K and HDR on the 1tb box and the 2tb box. I hope this information helped you.

On a Sony TV you have to go into the settings and external inputs and change each hdmi individually this will then give you 4 k hope this helps

With Sky Q we delete programmes from our recordings menu once we have watched them so we always have a immediate view of what we haven’t watched. I think with Sky Stream the playlist shows all the programmes for all the series whether you have watched them or not. I appreciate you get the blue line with Sky Stream but perhaps it’s not as obvious and immediate as the Sky Q recordings screen.

Changed to Sky Stream, after trying the playlist and forwarding through programmes I have today changed back, I hated the lack of functionality on Stream. The menus and remote aren't as good either. Really disappointed, complete waste of many hours researching, changing and changing back.

Do I get Sky Stream or stay with Sky Q? Must admit I am leaning towards Sky Stream as I have a decent internet connection and Sky Stream is cheaper

A bit off topic (although i do like sky stream, its been great and i love how all my services are in one interface etc and pic quality is amazing. Was slow and buggy in the 1st few weeks but settled down, i have been on a rolling contract for about 6 months now, not ready to go into a 18 month contract 😅 like that i can just cancel.) Anyways i was hoping if you could do a youtube vs spotify again. As youtube music has changed a lot the last few months it even has synced lyrics ! But im torn as im paying for youtube premium as i warch alot of it and im paying for spotify. I actually have access to apple music (kind of free as im part of a family sub) but im not in the apple eco system. I have an android phone (samsung fold 4) my tv is an android tv (however im using the sky stream for everything) i do however have an imac. (I used to be in the apple ecosystem lol) its so confusing !!! So was hoping you had some ideas to stream line everything.

There’s no way to clear the continue watching list on Sky Stream. Also you can’t see the channel while browsing most of the menus on stream (only on the guide you can see the mini player I think)

Either the HDMI cable doesn’t support it or it’s a base 1TB box. As far as stream goes if your a sports fans who likes to record sport, I would stick with Sky Q.

Not in America though, the mini boxes from satellite providers there, well they can support 4K...they were always more up to date than us! We are unlucky as Comcast bought Sky and as a cable provider, then have no idea what to do with satellite TV - they are running this once great corporation into the ground. @@WW-tg5pu

SkyQ absolutely delivers 4K UHD HDR and ATMOS surround sound with the relevant subscription pack. I watched the EPL this weekend in 4K UHD HLG via SkyQ on my OLED and it looked incredible. The advantage of viewing Sky Sports on SkyQ vs SkyStream is there is not the same broadcast delay which is introduced with streaming. When viewing the live broadcast sports channels on Stream you will be at least 20 seconds behind the satellite broadcast on SkyQ. I can see the attraction of Stream but would probably just go for Now on an AppleTV if I wanted Sky channels without a dish which is more flexible than Stream with no contract required for borrowed equipment. Stream is undoubtedly the future and the advantages for Sky with Stream are massive with no installer required to set up or repair a dish. Sky Stream will use significantly less power than Q due to not having hard drives and satellite tuners inside the box.

@@AShiftySpock 1440p is 2.5k. 2k refers to the horizontal resolution of 1.85:1 1080p film resolutions. Same way that 4k does for 2160p ( a TV resolution is actually only 3.8k but we say 4k as film stock is wider)

Just upgraded from Sky Q to Stream. & for me its good. Picture way better, the picture quality on Sky Q for me was ok 🤷🏽‍♂️. I have 300mb speed, so Stream is awesome. The playlist is not a problem, not sure why folks are uphappy its not record 🤷🏽‍♂️ i think it might be a generation thing, younger folks want on demand etc. The only problem i have is Sky Go App on phones & Tablets is only really setup for Sky Q. I think there needs to be a Sky Stream App, similar design & where you can add to your playlist or take away.

Could this have been because you did not have UHD on your Sky Q we wonder?

I work for sky and personally my honest opinion down to the fact that it isn’t Wi-Fi dependant and the record function as there’s things I watch that aren’t on the streaming services among the sky apps on the box. Stream for me it’s a good product but I don’t think it’s a finished product yet. Atm sky q is still my choice With your sky q only showing 1080p it could be your hdmi cable. Actual tv settings or you have got the hd sky q box rather than the uhd one there is 2 variants to the box plus your storage options etc

'Apparently' if you have any sky Q mini boxes linked with your 2TB, the main box can down grade from 4k/UHD to 1080p because the mini boxes cant play 4k/UHD content.

I’d have to disagree - I have a 2tb Sky Q box playing ultra HD and it’s linked to two ‘pucks’ and all’s good so not sure what was going on for Rate My Tech’s TV.

Sky mini’s can’t play in 4k only HD where as the sky stream pucks can do 4k, just upgraded to the sky glass with pucks to benefit from this

It wasn't in 4K as that isn't a 4k Sky Q box

Original Sky Q boxes didn't support UHD/4K and to upgrade you had to pay for a new box so chances are they didn't bother. As regards hiding the box, the remote is Bluetooth so doesn't need line of sight. Mine is on the wall behind the TV and works fine.

For the price of sky q subs they should let you have somekind of streaming with it incase of signal loss, heavy rain or snow etc i lose signal everytime. Had my dish moved and it still happens.

Main advantage of sky stream to me is 4k in all rooms , sky mini Q boxes no 4k , so if you record 4k programs on main box you can’t watch on Sky Q mini box …..annoying.

That is a good feature which sadly was missing from Sky Q. But in the U.S. you can get multi-room boxes which receive 4K.

SkyQ is far too expensive for me now. Sky Stream might be a better option.

It’s only 1080p because you haven’t set up your system correctly, I have a Sony 4k screen with Sky Q no problem , upskill your knowledge Sir , your Sky service needs to also support 4k and HDR for it to work , your video shows you watching a 1080p programme?

The program is irrelevent (most programs are not 4K) to the SKY configuration menu but the sky system clearly is not allowing 4K probably due to their package.

i thort i would miss the record but i really like the playlist.

Sky Stream 100%. If Sky had provided solid satellite dish instead of mesh dish, then i would had said 100% Sky Q or Sky+HD. The reason i'm saying that is becasue, mesh satellite dish is a little bit more sensetive. And the question is what kind of satellite dish is better? Mesh or solid? Mesh may do better job when it is bad heavy windy days. But solid gives a lot better signal quality.. and the 2nd question is. Is cheaper better? My opinion the answer is no! Not always. Sky Stream huge delay is because of it is running OTT. If it had running multicast it would only had 8 secound delay compared to satellite signal

4k is only available on the 2TB Sky Q boxes, the 1TB boxes only support 1080p, another way for Sky to rip money out of you, my Nan has the same 1TB box and only displays 1080p and not 4k

No doubt sky stream is the future but so many things to iron out. Firstly the live broadcasting is around 30 seconds behind the traditional satellite broadcast of Sky Q. With fibre broadband & the speeds being pushed now this has to get a lot better. Also, the sky puck is poor. The Apple TV blows it away with how slick everything runs & what would be better is if sky stream was made available as an app on the Apple TV.

I believe the hardware of Glass and Stream is still in its iteration, last I heard Sky were hoping to do a budget Glass as well, but no news on any other additions.

I still like sky+HD

A very important point....people need to remember the name Sky came from the fact it was a satellite tv provider, not an IPTV provider. @@naumanshafiq467

Sky stream will be the future for sure with fibre installations just so much better, not affected by weather, and goes anywhere an Ethernet (or high speed wifi) connection will go

@@SuperHitman55 Not quite true, as all that happens is your place of where you have last viewed is bookmarked with the episode available on Sky's servers (and only for Sky channels). If the programme is not available on-demand or catch-up then no bueno. If the programme should leave such services after a short time then no luck, imagine me trying to watch back episodes of Crimewatch Roadshow after a week, I'd be stuffed!

@@imhsn No you can cloud record. I do that with many programs and WWE on TNT Sports. It even has the "Recorded" watermark

Im happy with Sky Q. I would stay with Sky Q. I prefer satellite picture quality I had Sky Q for 7 years the only time I had an issue with bad weather is 2-3 times maximum this hardly ever happens. If it ever does there is always Sky Go option to use over wi-fi. I like how fast Sky Q is, I like the download and recording feature on my planner. Catchup apps such as iplayer, itv hub etc. have their own sky interface which allows forwarding adverts. Most importantly I would stick with Sky Q because it’s satellite watching a football game is live whereas Sky Glass, Sky stream it’s probably a minute or so behind. Does it really matter? Yes it does if you are a football fan and have friends texting you when a team scores (Spoiler) I also like the fact on Sky Q i can record my favourite movies on Sky Cinema and keep on my planner as long as I want even if it expires this has no effect.

@@RateMyTech I had sky ever since those first Panasonic and Grundig Sky Digital box awhich only had live tv and upgraded each time up until Sky Q which im happy with. The only good alternative I see to that is Virgin Media V6 and Virgin tv 360 which I also find really good. Not sure if you tried that

Sky q 2tb boxes is much better than sky stream and sky glass even if I had Fffp broadband I would still keep sky q your settings for 4k uhd hdr should be set to 2060p 10 bit picture resolution at the to of Audio visual setting I've tryed sky it is good but with sky q you can record and stream at the same time you can't do that with sky stream or sky glass I still enjoying your videos

Nice to know that you like it more. Indeed the interface is more updated, but for a few reasons SkyQ is still better for many of us. If Sky could offer Sky Stream with built-in HDD, all the channels from satellite and +1 channels then it would be a BIG winner, but until then many of us will stick with Q.

Sky stream are much more better there better than Sky Q but sky stream got more quality nice clean pictures and UHD

Could just be unlucky and have a faulty box or cable not capable of supporting full 4K viewing, worth contacting sky about because when it is 4K the picture quility is amazing, even on the menus look good, sky stream menu is more in depth but everything is still there on sky q, just simpler, especially if it were to be for an elder

Steve, I think you are using a mini box for Q, the only other sky Q box to ever output 1080p if it was a main box was the original one TB box when the system first came out in 2016. I think the biggest bug bear between Q and stream outside of recordings/playlist is the fact that you can distribute 4K on stream to multiple TVs, sky Q mini boxes go up to 1080p only. To make an informed decision whether you should get one over the other. It really bottom lines to do you care about 4K on multiple telly’s and do you care about recordings, from a base level comparison. If 4K distribution matters get a stream, if recording matters, get Q simples. Sure, you’ve got entertainment OS which has individual user options at this point. (personally I think that’s very useful, especially when you don’t want somebody else’s shit in your list). Anyway Steve, I hope you’re okay like? Same goes for yours also

you're using the sky Q mini box only the Sky Q main box can output a 2k Resolution. contrary to what people think SkyQ UHD isnt actually 4K. so if you're using apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney plus etc and you're also in possession of a 4K smart TV like this guy is here i HIGHLY recommend just using those streaming services through your built in TV apps NOT via the sky Q box. since the box only outputs 2K (1440p) resolution you're literally wasting half of your TV's picture quality potential. it took me a while to explain this to my uncle who was making the same mistake for months after buying a OLED 4K UHD Sony Bravia TV. i had to literally show him a scene from a show on Netflix via SKY then via the TV, the difference is night and day.

Wrong this was the main Sky Q box not the mini box. I think the issue is they don’t pay for the Ultra HD from Sky.
