Skull Kid is a GREAT antagonist for Link - A Deeper Look at Majora's Mask | Zelda Lore
Ойындар
In this video, we dive into why Skull Kid might just be the best antagonist for Link in the Legend of Zelda series. Compared to villains like Ganondorf and Vaati, Skull Kid stands out as a bit of an odd choice, but his hero-villain dynamic with Link in Majora's Mask is surprisingly deep.
The antagonistic relationship between Skull Kid and Link goes beyond the typical good versus evil storyline in a Nintendo Legend of Zelda game. If we look back at Ocarina Of Time, we know that both characters were once Kokiri, but even before the start of Majora’s Mask, they’re paths diverge greatly. Skull Kid's mischievous, irresponsible nature contrasts sharply with Link's selflessness and strong sense of duty.
This exploration through Skull Kid's character and his role in Majora's Mask is another hidden gem of game lore.

Slight Correction - Skull Kid was not a Kokiri. In the original Japanese version of the game, during the Biggoron's sword quest it is stated that anyone who is not Kokiri will get lost in the Lost Woods, and children will turn into Skull Children. This makes it more likely that Skull Kid was a human child rather than a Kokiri. Link believed himself to be Kokiri until the events of OOT. So, neither Skull Kid nor Link are truly Kokiri. A better comparison would be that they are both children of the forest who lost everything.
That’s honestly the best way I’ve ever heard it explained.

What I love about skull kid is that he's relatable. He's not evil. Buts he's lonely and angry at a world that refused to love him back.
There’s also a weird thing I noticed as kind of a parallel between Majora’s mask and persona 4 golden. Essentially link and skull kid are both going through the fools journey. But while link stays on the path of the fool, skull kid with the mask falls into the path of the jester. Link gains power through making connections with others, and with all of the masks, he eventually gains “the world” In the form of the fierce deity mask. But skull kid not only rejects connections with others, he uses them for his own amusement. Thus his path in at “the hunger” Symbolized by the moon that wants to devour everything.
Minor issue I believe that kokri can’t get lost in the lost wood I believe it’s mentioned near the end of the blue chicken quest when you get the saw

@cookiecookie8529 Interesting, so I brushed up on this a bit because I always interpreted that Kokiri turn into skull children when they get lost in lost woods, but now can't find anything to confirm that. The Kokiri are frequently referred to as children, or children of the forest, so whenever they talk about “children” turning into skull kids, I can't tell who they are referring to. BUT, I also can't find anything that says Kokiri don't get lost, or Skull children are exclusively human children… Can someone point out a source that confirms either?

Majora’s Mask is perfectly rated. Lots of people don’t know about it, but lots of people say it’s their favourite. Unfortunately I don’t have the option to play it because I don’t have the switch online expansion, a 3ds or a n64. But plot wise it’s one of my favourites.

This. This is why majora's mask is my favorite zelda game everything from OoT through MM even to TP is why the hero of time is my all time favorite link incarnation no matter how much the world and the goddesses crap on his life the hero of time continues to strive and help anyone he can. hell he died alone in the lost woods (supposedly cause hes a stalfose in TP) and yet he still hangs on so one day he can pass his knowledge and techniques to his descendant so the land of hyrule can live in peace
Well actually, it’s not any kokiri that gets lost in the lost woods becomes a stall child, it’s any child becoming lost that’s not under the protection of the great deku tree that becomes lost, which is why link can get lost in the forest and wind back at the start unaffected, so no, skull kid wants a kokiri, the manga even though not canon, further supports this, otherwise very good and interesting video showing a concept I’ve never seen before
@poojr.3559

When Link goes back in time, by that point I imagine the Great Deku tree still dies… because it’s already too late for him when Ganondorf curses him at the start of the game. So can the kokiri be protected from the curse of the woods if there is no Guardian?
@EricN64
Ай бұрын
@@poojr.3559 I presume it’s because of the eternal youth of the kokiri that prevents them from becoming skull kids, and as for link, we can assume the kokiri a guardian fairies act as a type of extension of the deku trees protection and they probably have some “forest magic” or whatever, and the fairies are heavily linked to the deku tree so it makes sense

@cluckgaming9190 Absolutely! Zelda lore is vast.
This is a perfect analysis and a big reason why Skull Kid is my favorite character of all time. And another interesting thing is that Skull Kid is one of the only Zelda villains shown to be redeemable. He did horrible things, both of his own volition and not, but he is granted forgiveness by the ones who left him behind in the first place, and presumably Link as well considering the picture you see after the credits. And now, they can both find what they’re looking for. They don’t have to be alone anymore.

I’m really hoping the next Botw style game doesn’t use Gabon again. Like the male gerudo are born every 100 or 1000 years, give us a young Ganon that’s an ally then let him descend into madness in like an end credits scene, setting up the next game
Agreed
Skull kid be like: "It's just a prank bro!"
This is an interesting character analysis. Though one has to keep in mind that Majora’s mask corrupted Skull kid. While he did do horrible things, he was clearly under the influence of Majora’s mask. It was a huge twist at the end. Link managed to stop the moon from crashing into Termina. Only then does Majora’s mask come to life and discard Skull Kid.
@brolytriplethreat

It's interesting. While yes, the Mask itself is evil and starts to take control as time goes on, the Mask _also_ seems to draw from the negativity of its owners, going off the visuals and characters in the Moon resembling the HMS (and having an obsession with collecting masks), while also resembling the Skull Kid (the one with Majora's Mask(Skull Kid) is supposedly ignored by his friends (the Giants) and decides to play the bad guy). It is an interesting design choice.
I wish we could play the song of healing for Skull Kid as the finish of the boss fight... (I haven't beaten MM, so it might be true)

This is 100% true, and in more ways than I originally thought! And the way you explained it was even better!!
Skull kid was not a Kokiri. He was a regular, Hylian child. As is Link. Link is _not_ Kokiri. Neither is the Skull kid. Kokiri are native forest spirits. They do not get lost in the woods and cannot become Skull kids.
Skull Kid is corrupted by the power of the mask, Link had that power forced uppn him and chose to save the world

But I'm still not aware of anything that says kokiri can't become skull children... maybe worth diving into for a whole video, "What are Skull Kids?"
I will say, the skull kid also isn’t a good antagonist because he himself is not interacting with link throughout the game. Same with both botw and totk’s villains
@brolytriplethreat
Ай бұрын
Well, he doesn't directly interact with Link much, though there is a decent bit to his character regardless, and I feel it is still more personal than Botw or Totk. It helps that even beyond the dungeons, almost every major sidequest conflict can be traced to him
It's crazy to think that Nintendo used to make games like this, now, they can only look back on their older, greater works.

@ZinskiVideoEssays

@michaelforis2713 Yeah Ganondorf takes the spotlight in a lot of Zelda games. And for good reason, he is certainly an S-tier threat... which by comparison does make other villains look like A or B tier. But there are other good ones. Vaati from the Minish Cap is stand out to me, also Zant from Twilight Princess (even if he does get short changed near the end). They might not be as iconic as Ganondorf, but they definitely add variety to Link's adventures.
