Skoolie Bus Conversion: Airhead or Natures Head Composting Toilet

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is not a direct comparison between Airhead and Nature's Head composting toilets nor is it an Airhead vs Nature's Head. We basically decided to buy the Airhead composting toilet for a number of reasons that we describe in the video. We are totally stoked to be one step closer to getting into Bussy!

Excellent review. An interesting fact for you. The Airhead was created by a former Nature’s head employee I’m told. He changed all the ‘issues’ he had with the Natures head and built the Airhead. A lot of composting toilet users also have a spray bottle with a vinegar solution or herbal concoction to clean up after those who miss the hole. Poop, close the hatch, and spray. Spray goes into the urine diverter. Cheers from Canader eh!

I’m close to getting done with the demo part of my bus and am starting to make decisions on specific things I’m gonna need to get during the build. These features you’ve shown for the Airhead is the exact reason I’m gonna get it. It seems this one is more user friendly in all the aspects that are most important to me with having a composting toilet. So thank you for making this video! It definitely helped me decide which one to get!

If you have a list I will need for tools and anything else you might think of that I will need for my conversion? I will be looking at busses Tuesday. 3 2019. Thank you Jonie Richens

It actually starts the composting process, and that helps it compost sooner (eliminating the risk of the pathogens sooner) in the landfill. But why take the bucket outside? Get a bag (black, preferably? maybe a 13-gallon garbage can bag) and put over the bucket, then wrap a bungie around it to tighten it up, so that you can turn it upside down. Shake/tap the bucket so that most of the contents fall into the bag. Turn the bucket back upright, only with the filled bag to the side, resting on the ground. Remove the bungee to free the bag; tie the #2 bag closed. Stick a biohazard sticker on it to warn dumpter divers, and one that warns of human waste would not be a bad idea. Put the bag to be tossed in a plastic shopping bag with handles, maybe, to make carrying it to be thrown out less obvious. And you can do this in the shower, where it is relatively easier to wipe up any spills that may occur.

Not sure if I commented a year ago when I saw this video. Sorry, if I already did. I just went back today to watch this video again. I have two month before I need to order my composting toilet. Yes, I’m going with the Air Head. You guys did a great review. Y’all made some excellent points, especially the urine diverter part. I was on the fence a year ago. It was between the other one or the Air Head. You convinced me then, you reinforced it now. Thank you.

Great info. I'm not sold on the composting toilet yet, but this gave a lot of info on how they work and everything. I'm rebuilding an old 1970ish camper trailer from the frame up. More of a redesign than a rebuild really. I haven't started researching CT yet so this is very helpful. Thanks.

A lot of owners run a line to the gray water tank and discharge it there. Others run a line to a 5 gal bucket beneath the bus in a compartment. The 5 gal bucket has a spigot to help drain the bucket. What he did was connect 2-5 gal bucket together with a valve between them. This way, if you are in a spot that is not available to dump, you have 10 gallons of room to play with. Something to consider. Good Luck.....

I love that you explained this! I agree with you completely!!! I think many people just pick the Nature Head over the Airhead because of the name. Airhead is what we call someone who not smart. But the differences are such a huge difference to me that the Airhead is what we will be getting. Awesome vid! Thank you!

First, I LOVE the name Bussy McBusface!!!! Second, this is one of the funniest damn videos I have ever seen and third, it is also one of the most informative!!! In the recent and now fairly intense head-to-head battle of the heads between Nature's Head and the newer Airhead, you guys mentioned a couple of things that I haven't heard anyone else mention! The fact that the liquids bucket can be removed without opening this poo pail and the crazy awesome lid for the poo pail!!! I worked in a hospital laboratory for several years, and a woman once brought her poo sample in for testing in a lovely gift box with a beautiful pink bow, but I think your "crock pot" comment was the best ever!!!!! Rock on!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for your review. You pointed out the differences between airhead & natures head pretty well. Three things made us thinkung. Nice review and comparison of the two composting toilets. We also bought the Airhead for our truck camper a year ago and the reasons you sighted for your choice were exactly the same impressions and reasons I had and chose the Airhead. You had a couple I either was unaware of or did not think about, but with over a year of use I absolutely agree. While your point of having the poo bucket cover is nice to have if you remove the top portion to carry out and dump, I have found it better to carry the whole toilet intact out and remove the top portion outside. Reason being is I can do a much more complete and thorough job of cleaning the top section outside. With regards to the coffee filters, I have found I do not need them and leave no skid marks to clean, while my wife finds she needs to use the coffee filters. Our experience with our Airhead has been positive and excellent and in fact we are planning to trade our truck camper in on a new rig and plan to get a new Airhead for the new rig as we will have to leave the current one behind. Good luck with yours and thanks for sharing your review.

Hi Mike and Kerry! I have to say y'all are so hilarious, but, yet on point at the same time! I'm going to be full time real soon and my dream had been to find someone to build out a completely stealth Promaster; well, that was no problem...the problem was the waiting list to get it done was atrocious. I do not wanna wait 3-6 months (or longer) for this to be built before I can hit the road! So, my alternate choice is the Pleasureway Lexor TS. I will definitely be having the same composting toilet [as y'all have] installed. I mean, why carry your poop and urine around in a water saturated container and then have to wait in line [or even pay] to dump. The cost is somewhat breathtaking (no pun intended!) but well worth the money when you consider how long one can go without having to 'dump' in the traditional way. Great video y'all! I have almost come to a finish on binge watching all of your videos... I think I have only a couple more to go then I'll be all caught up! Be safe, stay happy, love God, and, I'll see ya' in the next video! ( 8/22/2019. Thursday. 5:29amCST. ~Jim in Houston, Texas~ )

The differences you note in this video are absolute game changers or you wouldn't have decided on one over the other. I planned to develop/design my own toilet that would have contained some very similar features as the Airhead. I knew I did not want a Natures head from the first video I've seen on it. But thank you for sharing this video it is very helpful. If I don't develop my own system it would be because I bought the Airhead system.

I'm glad you went over the differences. These are the same thoughts I've had as I work on my bus. It does seem most people have the natureshead, and from my research I found the airhead to have much better features. Basically all the things you went over. The only thing you didn't cover is that with the airhead you are supposed to be able to lift off the seat with out tilting it, whereas on the natureshead you have to tilt it back first. This means you need more clearance behind the toilet with the natureshead, and it is more cumbersome. Thanks for sharing

I guess you never used a NH, right? - With the NH you have way more capacity. It's 4-6 weeks with 2 persons full-time. - The dimensions of the AH are only a few millimeters smaller, but you have to empty it much more frequently, because of it's shape. - You can get the NH with different handles, if you like. Mountable on both sides. - Unplugging the fan is a 1 second thing. The fan doesn't blow... - The urine bottle always stays in place, even off-road, because the holder holds it safely. If you drill a few holes in the holder, you can use it in a wet bath. - Transporting the urine bottle, use a bag to transport the urine bottle, if you're ashamed. With the NH, you realize pretty early, when you have to empty it... in contrary to the AH. - With the NH, you don't have a "home feel" toilet seat, but at the same time, you don't have any edges, where dirt can sit. Much more hygienic as all these sealings, you need for a wet bath with an AH. And no flimsy hinges to break, no thin lid you never get replaced. - There is a lid for the NH available as well. - And, you never need any of these coffee filters for the NH, because the hole is big enough and the trap door opens properly... And, last thing, there's a 5 year warranty as well for the NH. Guys, did they pay you? Mark it as advertising! We use our NH for 3 years now with 3 persons, never had any issues. I'm pretty happy with all the stainless steel parts, because they will never break. When we planned our truck, we had a close look to all available composting and separating toilets, like AH, NH, Separett, and have chosen the NH for it's robustness.

I would imagine that spraying the bowl and trapdoor with a hydrophobic spray like never wet would help prevent stuff sticking to the bowl and trap door. Of course, using coffee filters is common with portable camp cassette toilets which also use a trapdoor bowl.

Thanks for a very informative video. I'm trying to find the dimensions of the hole in the toilet seat area. I prefer an "oval" over a "round", as I am a fairly big guy. Can anyone help me with the dimensions of the "hole" part of the seat in the Airhead and the Nature's Head? So very appreciated! Thank you. Marc

That's precisely why I would never buy a Natures Head, because the urine is very visible in the 'see through' container, even as it sits in the bathroom. What visitor wants to look at someone else's urine collection when they're going in to use the bathroom?

Hi, I have heard (not sure how true it is) that the Airhead designer originally worked at Natureshead. It does seem that the differences with the Airhead take into account the pet peeves that Natureshead owners might have had.

I am glad you mentioned that the poop and coir is not composted when you dump it. It takes heat and time to make the compost safe from harmful pathogens. We have been using self made compost toilets for thirty years and making wonderful compost for our garden. Cost of each unit about £30. A four chamber composting system made out of pallet wood. Never a smell from the toilets or the compost system. So you didn’t mention where you would be dumping your tub of non composted health hazard poop? I have heard many RVers say they bag it up (could be messy) and dump it in the trash? Argument being there are already a lot of disposable nappies (diapers) in there. I think it’s a shame to waste what will be great compost by putting it in the rubbish, in the uk this would probably be shipped off to a third world country to deal with! Maybe towns could have a dump for compostable waste, but it would smell unless someone was responsible for turning it and supervising it for years. Jenkins, The Humanure Handbook is out of print but it is downloadable for free. It was our bible. By the way if I had an Air Head or similar system, I would paint the pee container, spray or paint a design, to camouflage the yellow colour. Great video, made me laugh. Thanks.

Their manual that comes with nature’s head tells you if you have a All in one shower? Drill a hole in bottom of urine caddy.. I like the fact that the urine has a caddy to hold onto it... a friend painted her urine container with roses and sunflowers! Beautiful😻 They built the seat into the toilet for less moving parts moving or getting broken.. all these were first built to go on sailboats ect, rough water. I like it, less to break. The crank on nature’s head also has the clip, go’s forward or reverse. And lastly your bowl is smaller on that one.. they also have a way to put a hose on for it to drain into a bigger tank or somewhere else. Everyone I know god with nature’s head, love it!
