Installing an Air Head Composting Toilet & Plumbing the Liquid Waste into our Black Tank
We finally installed our Air Head Composting Toilet, with the added feature of plumbing it directly into our black water tank! We used a Hepvo Valve as the main piece of the install inside the bus, which can actually be removed in case we are ever in a circumstance where we need to use the "liquids jug" that came with the Air Head Toilet! All in all, we are VERY pleased with everything about the Air Head. If you're looking for a cost comparison, the Air Head was $69 more than the Nature's Head toilet, and we feel it was worth it for the added features. Kerry loves that it has an actual "seat" instead of having to sit right on the plastic toilet bowl, and Mike loves all the technical features, like the reversible crank handle, the interchangeable hose/screen setup, and the placement of the ventilation fan at the floor!
It won't be long now until we're prepping it for use!

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry

I think Kerry should paint an elephants face on the toilet lid and make the drain to the tank the trunk of the elephant.
AIRHEAD ALL DAY!! Love the way the toilet turned out and I am pretty sure if we buy one we will go this as well. The features you point we make a huge difference, we want to install it this way as well so we don't have to empty it so often! Awesome video as usual!

Thank you for the step by step video I have been looking at installing the Air Head This was very helpful
Good job Mike that's a really better way for the liquid to go down to the black tank. You have really thought out the build on this bus and it shows. Regards John
Excellent Job Folks 👍....... Down the road, may consider cutting the longer pipe below the connection and put in a rubber sleeve to ack as a vibration assembly if any bounces during travel. This rigid connection may be problematic later on and crack the black tank. Something to keep in mind. Or, if the HEPA trap gives any trouble, consider putting the trap outside between the elbow and black tank to have the mess outside when working on it instead in the house. I think some of them are flex traps, and if used outside it will also a vibration unit between the floor and black tank. Many options to do it, depending on your desire. Then, you can put a solid pipe inside that’s adjustable that slides between 2 pipes to fit the connection and be less noticeable. Any and all will work, 👍.
good idea with the install. im thinking of doing that with my build when i get around to starting it. thanks for the heads up. lol
Best toilet install EVER! I agree and definitely do not want to empty pee container every few days. Been torn between toilets but I think I am now sold on the Air Head. Thanks so much.

A nice clean and innovated install!A better way for the dump to go down the tank. Another idea is you can get a five gallon bucket with lid under the bus to supply your need for secondary tank.
Hey guys I wanted to say thank you so much for all your videos! I bought my bus on 8/8/2020 and your videos are helping get things done. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I’m from Arizona too and hoping I will get to meet you guys someday when I get my conversion done. Hopefully you will be at skooliepalosa next February and maybe I will see you there. Thanks again for all your help.

May be a 5 gallon bucket with lid under the buss removable on a bracket would supplement the need for a secondary tank in addition of a valve and a hose coming off of that may also work.
Hi Mike, Hi Kerry, The toilet install was so well thought out no wonder you were pleased Mike, but then a lot of the things happening in your bus have been thought out before the install, less mistakes that way.. My only (tiny) suggestion might be to hit that bit of metal with some either rust type paint or some of that black rustoleum type of goop. I suspect it will start to oxidise almost immediately. It's under the bus, harsh environment etc. Just sayin.
Exactly how I planned to install mine! Good job. If you get a second lemonade tank, you can trim it down to make a screen that hides the piping. The Airhead is soo much nicer than the Nature's Head. Kerry, check the watermark section of your video editing software!

Well done and good idea to connect the toilet to the gray water tank! - I bought an AirHead with the small liquid tank and was very disappointed. I found that the liquid tank can ONLY be attached to the outlet with the spring, if the toilet as a whole can move a little bit UPWARD, so that the tank can slip under the outlet. That means: You can NEVER screw the toilet to the ground really TIGHT. Look at the metal angle! The hole for the winged screw is bigger than the diameter of the screw, so it has always room to move, no matter how hard you ever tighten the screw. - Drive one day on a corrugated road, and the screw will start to loosen and the toilet beginn to hiphop. - Do you drive really rough and bumpy roads, and how is your experience with the fixing? (I have an IVECO Daily 4x4).

I'm looking to buy/install an airhead, but I'm looking for a way to dump it without carrying it outside. My question is if the compost/agitator breaks down the solids enough to suck through a 2" shop vacuum hose. If I plumb the vent with solid 2" ID PVC pipe, and get a 5 gallon bucket head vacuum, I could remove the vent fan and hook up the vacuum outside. The inside toilet vent hose would be disconnected from the vent/vacuum pipe and a shop vac hose would be installed. The seat of the airhead would be removed, exposing the used compost. The shop vac hose would use to remove the compost. This could evacuate the compost easier, allowing women/ kids to empty. This would also let us dump in locations where carrying out the toilet would be frowned upon. The 5 gallon buckets could be sealed and stored until a good disposal location is available. Also anaerobic composting could continue in the bucket. Yes, the tube could have some deposits, but it would be the vent tube mostly. The shop vac hose could have a carrying container or bag to carry inside and out. It could be stored in the usual septic hose bumper location. Is this possible, or are there large solids that aren't broken down.
next time (if there is a next time) maybe drill the big hole before you cut out the tiny piece of sheet metal.
'Oh my gato' ;D
Hey, thanks for the video. What a great idea! I am about to purchase an AirHead for my first camper but am torn between the residential size or the marine size to save a little on space. Which size is yours, and are you happy with the size of it? Thanks, Nick

wouldnt it have been better to have the hepvo valve between the black tank and the floor ,cause if you put the lemonade bottle in you will have black smells coming up to the under side of the lemonade tank ,,???,have just done all this to our 5 th wheeler but we used a natures head and vented through the roof with a xtra sucking fan at the roof line ,,luv you programe, from new zealand
Great install! Proving once again that you two really have your sh!zzle together! (Oh my Gato - I’m definitely gonna steal that one)
Fyi if yoir bis starts smelling like sewer you may want to direct the vent to the roof again fyi sewer and drain vent always go to the roof because the smells is going to want to travel up amd then get in to the bus/rv
Fernco is the brand we use in the South. It fits over the ends of the ABS pipe between the lateral pieces [ one piece glued into each 90% fitting] and spans the gap, is held in place by hose type clamps on each end. It allows you to connect the piping without making it stiff. That creates a vibration free connection that won't cause the threaded joint in the part of the tank you put the threaded adapter in.Your piping AND your tank is isolated.......less leaks and repairs down the line[time]. Just buy the proper size to fit your pipe.ACE has them. www.amazon.com/Fernco-P1056-125-4-Inch-Stock-Coupling/dp/B00077PW22/ref=sr_1_14?crid=Y9F6NPDRGFYW&dchild=1&keywords=fernco+drain+connector&qid=1587264804&sprefix=fernco+connectors%2Caps%2C544&sr=8-14

I like the way you think!
the peice of pipe sticking up off the floor might interfere with the can you want to put the bottle, catchcan under it to prevent filling the black watertank then again if youre planning to use it when you are at one spot for a while you could setup the catchcan under the bus and ad a small tap under the bus in the line to the blacktank to put it under , keeps the smell out of the bus even if the bottle falls over or overflows might be able to digg a small hole in the ground under the bus and dump straight intoo that (fill it back in when you leave and noone will know)whoooo that isnt alowed whooooooh ..... well if bears and deer can do it so can we as for working under the bus : get a full sheet of melamine or some pieces from a cheap (ikea) bookcase and tape them together to make a bigger sheet , its nice and flat and slippery when you slide over it with youre shirt and pants makes it eazier to move under the bus without rocks poking you in the back , works better then cardboard
Are you painting the outside of the bus? If so do have colors picked?
So in the event that you used the lemonade jug and remove the white pipe.... will you put a rubber stopper or some kind of plug in the black pipe that leads to the tank so odors and or bugs can't come up?

In the absence of a water flush Will the salts fro the urine clog the Hepvo valve?
@Roobah

I have heard spraying with vinegar helps, as does putting down a mineral salt made to keep crystal build-up in check. Wonder if the valve would not like the additional chemicals though?
How is the air head working out? I'm trying to decide what to do, DIY or Air Head.
Still working good? We are considering this option.
Question? Where you mounted the drain pipe under the bus is touching the rail. Will the give in the bus not break the pipe?

No. It's a small pipe and very tough. It will last a long time. Furthermore, the rim of the coupler above the bracket it captured but the hole we drilled and won't move or cause wear to the pipe.

This bus fell in our lap. But if I had to choose I would still choose a school bus because of ground clearance. I want to be able to drive off into the dirt and a lot of the over-the-road buses do not have this kind of ground clearance.

Do you think that at 23:27 that the floor rib will wear through the drain when you have vibrations?

Sorry if this has already been answered, but is the urine going into a tank all by itself...or do you put other waste water in that tank also? The pipe isn't actually attached to the composting toilet. It is attached to the floor. You just lift the top right off. The composting toilet has a spring seal that presses down on the container that comes with the composting toilet. It presses down on the pipe as well.
just thought of sumting , if you pee it will replace the water in the waterlock , the peesmell will still get out (even though the lock stops the smell from the black tank ) you need to flush the waterlock through so theres only vinigar water in there every time you do a number 2 stale pee can smell rea\ly bad if you let it sit

Cool and informative video but the cute chica narrating made it the best :) Plumbing to your black tank removes one of the worst annoyances of a composting toliet. I had a C-HEAD with a gallon milk jug collector and it seemed like every fourth or fifth time I had to piss the thing needing dumping. Multiple jugs solves that but who wahts to ride around with ten gallons of piss? 26:52 I think your "water flow" test could have been far more interesting hahahahahahahahaha
With a composting toilet, you should have no black water tanks, only gray water tanks.
@Roobah
3 жыл бұрын
The advantage of a black-water tank is insurance companies and DMV registration (as an RV) will ask / expect you to have a black tank installed to your toilet. This way they can honestly say, YES, we have a black tank installed. It would be their choice at that point to just use it as a gray tank only. Don't ask, don't tell. Gets the paperwork done quite easily. Only Mother Nature's Head knows whether or not their black tank is really being used as a black tank or not!
