    Great video Igor thanks mate. The heater core USUALLY blocks up because the silica bag in the header tank rips and the crystals end up in the matrix currently foxing this problem now.

Ran into the exact same problem as you with a broken fin after falling down behind the core and those clips are painful! Appreciate the video, I've no mechanical experience and was able to change out the core because of your video. Thanks again.

    Good walk through on matrix exchange. Very easy in this type of car. Of course the most serious problem radweld causes if its the old red stuff is that when it blocks the tiny channels in the heater matrix, the next time a DPF regen starts, the system cannot put that charge water through the matrix properly and many people believe this is what is behind the mysterious coolant losses many owners of VAG cars speak of. Have you heard anything like this?

  • @markodonovan9921

    My Octavia 3 1.6TDI developed the same problem 7 years ago but i never bothered to change it until last week when fluid leaked into the foot wells. Without inspecting the core i ordered a replacement and was sent the very same one you have in this video. Turns out the one in the car is smaller and has 2 pipes protruding from it. A lengthy search revealed it was the same as that used on an Audi TT. Eventually got the part minus "O" rings which i sourced locally. Removal & fitting slightly more involved that this but got it done and there is now heating once more.

    Great video I changed mine in 3 hours but i brought new clips and seals in a kit for less than £15 from Skoda. Also when fitting the pipes back on DONT fit the plastic cover for the matrix in place till the clips are on you need to have movement for the pipes to seal correctly to get the clips on then fit the plastic cover over the matrix.

    Great video, just did mine yesterday (LHD Mk7 Golf GTI, slightly easier as can get away with removing lower trim piece only). Among the many other useful things in your vid it was was very useful to let me know to think about coolant draining before I popped those hoses off! What I did was use a bit of large bubble wrap I had lying around - was able to nicely wedge in behind the hoses and extend it to footwell just in case, than I also fashioned a very crude little funnel out of carboard to channel most of the coolant (I think there's round about half a liter in that matrix). Not a bad DIY job but skinned my knuckles and bruised my ribs contorting myself in the footwell to get at everything! Found myself cursing VW about those blower vents - if they were only half an inch shorter the matrix would slide right out...as it was I was able to bend them backward slightly (rather than remove more dash pieces to get to remove the vents) and get the matrix out - but very fiddly. I seriously considered taking a dremel to them and taking that last half-inch off for future ease of access!

    @@matthewburch6913 Hi mate just wrote a comment but it didnt show for some reason but I used a Nissens brand matrix for about $80, not sure if they have that brand in UK or not. I did drain the coolant from the lower radiator hose to minimise the amount draining out of the heater core. Also as it turns out, replacing it only partially fixed my problem - the main issue was the so called N82 coolant valve a bit further on the line mounted on the side of the engine - a right pain in the backside fiddly job, but that was the main problem as it was seized shut - having done that, the heater is now nuclear powered!

  • @SheldonLikesTrains

    @SheldonLikesTrains

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@walruspolish Hey Danny, yeah it's pretty much the exact same way. It just depends if your car is left hand drive or right hand drive. If it's right hand drive you can use this video as a reference. Mine is left hand drive, so I needed to access the heater core from beneath the steering wheel. This meant I needed to remove the long panel between the driver seat and the middle console (1 screw in the front and a few clips along the top) and I needed to remove the knee airbag to get it out (which is rather simple, you just disconnect the battery, wait 15-30 min and remove it; but to do that I needed to cut 2 holes in a plastic cover which covers the screws; cutting the holes was described in the official workshop manual from Seat). Other than that, make sure you just use the recommended G13 coolant mixed with distilled water. The modern heater cores of the Leon 5F / Golf 7 generation are extremely sensitive and get some kind of protection from the G13 coolant. Using anything else or even tap water can lead to another blown heater core. I really hope it's just your heater core. I have the same engine in my Leon and my head gasket blew after just 97000 km - the blown heater core was just collateral damage since some stuff from the head gasket failure must have gotten stuck in the heater core.

  • @walruspolish

    @@SheldonLikesTrains Many thanks for the reply, Dominik. It's a RHD. Yet to investigate the car but I hope it's nothing too sinister. Coolant warning came up on the dash, checked level and coolant seems to be empty. Praying it's not the head gasket! Car has done 74,000 miles....not too sure what that is in KM. Is the g13 coolant the purple stuff?

  • @SheldonLikesTrains

    @SheldonLikesTrains

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@walruspolish Yes, G13 is the pink / purple coolant, but I think G12/G12+ are also pink 😅 I bought the original VW coolant just to be sure. Did the warning come up once or more oftern? Determining the cause of coolant loss can be done with a fluorescent liquid and a cheap kit to check if exhaust fumes enter the coolant loop - that's the way I did it. After checking for exhaust fumes, I just added a small bottle of it to the coolant and used a black light to find the leak. In my case the whole carpet was glowing 🤦‍♂️

Blowers all work well but no hot air at all. Also noticed car is using up a lot of oil. I have been told that unlike the old cars the oil and coolant don’t mix on these cars. So I don’t know if it’s a head gasket issue or a heater matrix issue. It does have the silicone crystals bag as it’s stated on the coolant expansion bottle. But I originally thought it was a leak so I put in steel seal in my car to fix but noticed the cars coolant just over pressures and comes out of the overflow of the coolant bottle which causes it to go all over the engine mount and arch. Can you please help me or advise in anyway at all as I’m desperate to get it fixed and wouldn’t have thought a car of this age would have given me this issue but reading forums and looking at videos like yours I’m not alone. Car is over heating at times and heaters have stopped giving out hot air, sometimes gives warm air depending on the speed. Thought it was thermostat so had that replaced, no luck again. Seen a video of someone saying if you hear water spilling from the bottom left of the car (which I did) it’s most likely the heater core It’s getting to a point I want to just get rid but I’m willing to give it one last try, what do you think?

    Great video , Im pretty sure my matrix has gone on 2013 seat leon 1.6tdi, Inlet to Matrix is hot , outlet is warm so suspect the matrix but i have two questions , the two pipes coming from the bulk head did you losen / disconnect anything from the engine side .also im not losing any coolant and have check and no leaks so im thing of just draining all of the coolant from the radiator connection bottom left then filling with new coolent after replacing the matrix . or should i disconnect the pipe under the airbox as you have ?. cheers again

    Thanks man ... disconnect the bottom radiator pipe flush as much coolant as you can fit the bottom pipe back then fill the system up with water bring up to temp then empty it again and fit the bottom pipe back, then replace the heater matrix fill up the reservoir with coolant then bring the engine to op temperature with the heating on , the system should self bleed check the level when it’s cold and top it as needed 👍

    Good morning, I am looking for advice please, I have a 2014 GTD that's leaking coolant into exhaust system ( white smoke from exhaust and coolant light comes on) , I changed the intake manifold because the charger was leaking (seen water in the throttle body through the sensor hole after removal. Got a second hand Intake manifold from scrap yard, put it on , 2 days later same issue is back again (a lot slower leak this time). I removed the plastic pipe into the throttle body and see some water in this again. Did I just get unlucky with a bad part from the scrap yard or could i have a another leak somewhere else ? Got the coolant system pressure tested after changing the intake manifold and first time the pressure went down and emptied the bottle, filled it , pressure test again and it held the pressure, however after a short drive the light came on again to top up and i seen white smoke when driving. what do you think ? Can i bypass the charger unit , is it safe to do so ? thanks a million, appreciate your help.

  • @mjj4

    @mjj4

    3 жыл бұрын

    Try closing the passenger side vents and see if it comes through warmer on the drivers side. The symptoms you have suggest you have a partially blocked matrix. This is because the pipes enter the matrix on the passenger side, and the drivers side is at the top of the matrix. The top of the matrix blocks and only allows the hot water to pass through the first 50% of the matrix (which is the passenger end). This blockage is commonly caused by the silica bag in the coolant bottle splitting and allowing silica balls to enter the matrix. If you have calibrated the vents and the motors are running from cold stop to hot stop then it's 99% chance going to be your matrix again.

    I don't think it says in the video so apologies if it does but did you flush the whole coolant system? If that amount of dirt was collected just from the heater matrix, it's likely the whole system is full of it too right? Won't the matrix get clogged up again fast if it's not flushed?
