Skoda Octavia Estate 2017 Review | Driver's Seat

Skoda’s third-generation Octavia hatchback, estate and Scout have been given a mid-life refresh.
The front-end styling is significantly revised with the large bland headlights replaced for sharply designed quad units, similar to the fourth-generation Mercedes E-Class (W212).
The front and rear bumpers are new while the rear taillight graphics are redesigned.

There are subtle changes inside, which give the Octavia more of an upmarket feel. The sat-nav display is larger and has a revised design, with the screen growing to 9.2in.
The estate gets a choice of three petrol engines; a new 1.0-litre, a 1.4 and the 2.0 TSI 230 in the VRS. Three are also three diesel engines to choose from including a 1.6 TDi and two variants of a 2.0 TDi (150PS and 184PS), with the more powerful versions featuring in the vRS.
All versions come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard while a six or seven-speed DSG dual clutch automatic is available as an optional extra.
The updated Octavia Estate is available in six trim levels, S, SE, SE L, Scout, vRS, Laurin & Klement with prices starting from £18,395.
We’re testing the 2.0-litre TDI 150 fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox in SE trim, which costs £22,530.

Refreshing to see a review of a trim level most people are likely to buy. I'm so sick of watching car reviews where they take a top of the range model out. Come to think of it, nearly every car dealership seems to only showcase top spec models too. In my opinion this SE version of the Skoda Octavia Estate will be way more popular than the Laurin & Klement or SEL version shown in nearly every other review. Much more useful - thank you!

Decent car and a very good review as always. I have recently test driven one of these and also the Seat Leon ST and found the Leon more fun to drive as well as having better standard kit and of course far better looks.

Philip Jones that's super kind of you to say, thank you. Agree that the Leon is a more entertaining car to drive. FR spec is excellent. The Octavia is more spacious and great value.

Why is (hard) plastic in the cabin getting such short shrift? I can't remember the last time (never) that I was feeling up the dash. I would understand it more in a luxury car (a very big maybe), but if the dash design and execution looks great why care so much if it is soft or not? Having asked though, I must add that if soft touch belongs anywhere then it should be where one's knees interact with the centre console, and elbows with parts of the door....in fact it should be mandatory for all cars to have such soft(er) contact points. Otherwise, great review! Skoda is a wonderfully underestimated brand.

BBdecool1 agreed about where softer materials should be at contact points. We'll often refer to padding on doors or central armrests for this reason. Mentioning the type of plastics is firstly informative to the viewer (who can't touch or tell from the video) and secondly is a perception of quality against price. Take the Suzuki Swift. Hard plastic everywhere but low price, so a fair trade off. Hard shiny plastics quite often don't look great and can make the interior date more quickly. People either care or don't about them, a bit like 0-60mph time but it would be remiss of us to ignore either or both.

Soft plastic is less prone to creak at joints. That's the main advantage as far as I'm concerned. It may also absorb noise better.

"Wonderfully underestimated"? What's so wonderful about being underestimated?

I have the estate in SEL spec which includes the epic LED headlights! Mine is also the super smooth DSG box and I'd never go back to manual now. I went for the 1.4 TSI engine which is smooth and quick and overall I prefer the practicalities and style of the estate over the hatchback 👍

I know it's a old review but I have same car and when he says rumbling over broken road surfaces does that transmit into steering wheel because in mine it has a very strong buzzing feeling over broken surfaces and makes it a bit uncomfortable to hold steering wheel

Gooday Ken - Favorite and favourite are both correct spellings, depending on whether you use American or British spelling standards (the latter is only used by a small island nation - rather than the American version which is the overarching global form . British spelling is now regarded as outmoded/obsolete/quaint - a vestigial form of the language - 'Favourite' has been superseded by 'Favorite' and is now established as the choice of the majority. USA! USA! USA!

Looks like the rear seats don't go fully down 1:10, what is that all about, at least the Vauxhall Astra folds FLAT and you have a boot floor like a van !
