SKIN CARE TIPS- DIY Derma roller
Dermarolling or skin needling is a form of microneedling. This can be classed as generation one microneedling and is over 2 decades old. This entry level treatment is still effective for minor corrections of skin texture. Dermarolling can be used to teat very early and mild forms of acne scarring and chicken pox scars. Mild acne scar types that can respond to microneedling include shallow box car scars, mild atrophic acne scars, and rolling acne scars. It should not be used to treat red or brown acne scars. This treatment can also reduce skin pore sizing, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. The safest dermarolling or skin needle length ranges from 0.25 to 0.5 mm. Longer skin needles can cause paradoxical skin scars, and even traumatize nerves and blood vessels. Needling can be performed using a variety of devices including Dermarollers, Dermapen, CIT or Collagen Induction Therapy devices, and many variations of skin rollers. The brand does not matter, however the more needles the better- I recommend skin rollers with more than 240 needles, titanium tip, single use only. They can be found on ebay for $5 to $10. This video is designed to save you money and perform this procedure safely at home.
The fundamental difference between skin needling or dermarollers and laser, is that light energy is not used in microneedling and no heat is generated.
Microneedling -skin needling can be divided into two main types- energy microneedling and non-energy based microneedling. Examples of energy based microneedling devices include Infini, Profound, ePrime, Venus Viva, Vivace, Intracel, Intensif and Secret. These provide micro columns of injury in the deep layer of the skin, as well as controlled heating via a process called RF or radiofrequency. I only perform fourth generation skin needling using insulated energy based RF devices like INFINI micro-needling as well as third generation devices like Instensif.
Here is my suggestion for how to perform safe dermarolling or skin needling at home.
1. Photos are vitally important to assess your progress and to see if this treatment is suitable for you. Take high resolution of your acne scars or skin condition under direct and indirect lighting. Photos are vital to gauge progress.
2. Buy a dermaroller as a cheap alternative to a medical grade microneedling device. Choose a 0.25 - 0.5 256 needle dermaroller. Don’t go deeper than this for home use!
3. Use a medical grade disinfectant like Chlorhexidine. Avoid microneedling to active zits, pimples, acne or acne cysts as they may contain contaminated pus with bacteria.
4. Apply the numbing cream for one hour before the procedure.
5. Wipe off numbing cream and re-wipe with the disinfectant.
6. Have someone in sterile gloves provide counter traction and roll your acne scars. Expect to bleed as scars lie in your dermis. Roll 3-6 times with firm pressure. Change direction, ie. Rotate 90 degrees, then roll another 3-6 times. Apply firm pressure for 2-3 minutes to stop the bleeding.
7. Apply a emollient such as QV intensive or a bland moisturizer.
8. Start using active creams 2-4 days after the procedure. More experienced users can infuse skin vitamins and copper peptides straight after skin needling.
9. Repeat the process 3- 6 weeks later, intervals will depend on your needle depth, the number of passes, pressure, and your healing time.
10. Retake photos, compare after 5 sessions.
Remember - home microneedling is just a gentle treatment for mild skin concerns. Moderate to severe acne scars, wrinkles and pores will not respond to this simple DIY treatment. This is where fourth generation RF devices and lasers can be helpful. I hope you find these skin care tips, skin care routines and skin product reviews helpful.

That's not how things work. I am a dermatologist, and I can assure you that there are no clear guidelines yet regarding the safety of dermarolling at home, and thus doctors will be providing subjective advice from their own experience. Dermarolling absolutely carries its own risks, and so some doctors will prefer to stay on the safe side and advise you to get the procedure done in-office, while others may feel it's relatively safe to do at home. We absolutely see disastrous outcomes of DIY dermarolling in practice. It is a matter of opinion, nobody is either right nor wrong here.

I did the opposite. Ive been spending $1000's on 4th-5th gen equiptment and only just bought a 0.25 derma roller last week. The effects of DIY have surpassed all my experience at the beauty salon. I had nasolabial folds that no equipment helped much. I started dermarolling, with a diy high dose marine collagen drink twice a day with high dose vit C. The results were dramatic in 1 session.

Whoa. I’ve been WAY overdoing it with the amount of strokes I’m doing all over my face. I’m only using a 0.3mm roller so hopefully I haven’t done any damage. I always apply Hyaluronic Acid pre-rolling and Vit C post rolling. I’m definitely going to limit the use of my roller and change my rolling strokes to exactly what you showed. Thank you so much for caring about our skin!! You are the best Dr. Lim!!

But thanks, Doc! I learned something from this video and now I'm torned weather I should be doing this on my own. 🤷‍♀️

Hello, Dr. Lim! I really appreciate this comprehensive video on dermarolling at home! There are some aestheticians and dermatologists who do not recommend using Vitamin C after dermarolling because there have been cases of granuloma resulting from it. I would love to know what you can say about this! Thank you very much!

Thanks, a lady in her 70s looked fantastic and was recommending a 1.0 that she used to keep herself looking good. Saw them advertised on a popular discounted site overseas, didn't realize how deep a 0.5 goes, or the prep and aftercare, or how much bleeding, and safety spots to watch for. Came to YT to learn more, this was the first video. Thank you for taking the time to keep people safe. I didn't realize they were 1 time use only, and the areas to stay short and light over. All the best for everyone out there.

Thank you so much! I go every 3 months to get a retinol chemical peel. I did one treatment of microneedling. The price was $150.00 half off at the time. I went to dermatologist last week and asked about another treatment. The cost is $250.00. I was going to do it but will try this first. I purchased a package deal at Christmas for Botox and 2 retinol peels for $450. Last week I got retinol peel and botox. It cost me $400. They were running special $10.00 per unit. I felt like I paid a bit too much because I prepaid at Christmas for the retinol peel. I love doing the retinol peels and the results I get from doing them. Love your youtube channel. Will you do a video on retinol chemical peel please. 😊

This was very interesting and helpful. I derma roll with the size you suggested and have liked having this as an at home option. However, I've been watching and reading from others how this isn't safe to do at home, one being a doctor here on KZread. I have started to feel confused on my decision to do this at home due to the mixed information. Also, it seems many here on KZread are purchasing one derma roller and using it multiple times. So you can see how this can become hard to understand the right methods to do this safely with so much conflicting information. I appreciate you doing this video and I will likely continue, but will only use disposables for a single use. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I am a bit perplexed as to how the needles can only be used once. I get the point about sanitation and infection, but the needles getting worn out makes little sense from a physical perspective. Human skin really shouldn't wear out titanium..
