Messi came to intermiami ,the weakest team in MLS and won their first ever trophy,I guess that's also an impact. Edited:Lot of users here misunderstanding that I compared MLS to seria but it's actually not I just told about impact after all Messi won league Cup by being top scorer and top assister.Both of them are the greatest player in their own respective generations and we can't compare both eras and both Messi and Maradona, just appreciating both players.

It was so hard. Also the strengths of team 86 was so harder than 22, also the pens Argentina recieved ,no chance for penalties like that in 80s. And Diego was 53 times fouled in 86 alone more brutally.Still performance wise Diego was clearly higher. Did everything from tackles to interceptions clearence to create and score,and two of greatest WC performance ever. Diego's achievement difficulty is levels above tbh.

Just place Messi in 1987 and Maradona in 2018. Very different. No tackles from behind. Both are tough Argentinians. You cannot bully them. But Maradona rode most of the reckless tackles. Not sure if Messi would. Maradona on a carpet and protected. Just watch his goal of the century in 1986 and his goal against Belgium. Thes are scored when it matters. And Argentina 1986 was not as good as the 2022. The difference was Diego.

Messi is only Messi. But Maradona is a combination of Gattuso, Zidane, Ronaldinho and Messi too. Maradona peak time was shorter than Messi's so his statistics seem worse. But he created performance football, as enchanting as Ronaldinho but as effective as Zidane.

As much people loves Messi and his achievements, Maradona will always come on top. Maradona had it tougher in medium caliber teams whereas Messi played with top of the line teammates that made it easier for his achievements.

Maradona made Napoli champions twice in league titles in 1987 and 1990. The 1987 Coppa Italia, the 1990 Supercoppa Italiana, and the European trophy with the 1989 UEFA Cup. In the 1986 World Cup he was key for Agentina to win it, and what sets Diego on top of Messi is his leadership an attribute that Messi always lacked.

People who are old enough to witness Maradona during his prime will all agree that Maradona was more dangerous to the defenders than Messi. Nobody was comparable to him during his time, not even the Ballon d’or winners (nobody cared back then). He was unstoppable by half of the team (5-6 players) in WC ‘86 (England, Belgium, Italy, etc.). The only way to stop him was to tackle him from behind. Messi has achieved much more awards with his professionalism, discipline, consistency and longevity. But Messi’s prime was nowhere near Maradona’s prime.

Hi Argentinian here, 42 years old. Apart from all the comments in the video and the followers, I can compare Messi and Maradonna as impacting our country: Maradonna was far much more impactful as a referent, idoll, magician. Messi is famous and so on, but Maradonna has extra merchandising for children, even small dolls to buy or get in different campaigns at that time in our country (and I think in other foreign countries too)

By looking at stats alone without watching the full time matches, will definitely be misleading. Every matches that Maradona played (no matter winning or losing, scoring goals or not), they were the battles between Maradona against the entire teams trying to stop him by illegal tackles and fouls. The only strategy was to stop Maradona in order to win. If he played with today ruleset back then, half (4-6 players) of the teams would have gotten the red cards.

More skill? Based on what? Creativity? You can’t say Maradona had more skill. You could say you personally like his creative style better. And that would be more than fair. But to flat out say he has more skill than Messi is dumbfounded. Just because Messi’s style is simpler, it doesnt mean is less skill. Skillwise, Messi is the best ever at: Shooting Passing Dribbling Vision First touch Ball control This, without dimisnishing Diego’s skill. He was an all time great at all these too. i don't see how Messi ever even got close to Maradona. Maradona vs Belgium in 1986 has got to be the most absurd performance a player ever made, unreachable. And below Maradona I'd put Ronaldo (Nazario, not cr7) and Ronaldinho. Not Messi.

Comparing number of goals is not relevant because Maradona was a midfliedder and Messi a stricker... Also, football is not just about performance, goals or cups. Cruyff is way more talented and crucial in footbal history than let's say... Mbappe. I am sorry but a world cup or goal rate doesn't determines how good of a player you are. Is is how hard are the things you have done.

Although Messi has achieved what no other player has achieved, Maradona remains the best. I do not know why, but he is very special. Even his picture says that he was born to be a star and distinguished from the whole world.

Maradona lead a Millorca or Tenerife level team to win the UEFA Cup & 2 Serie A, captaining a ragtag Argentine time to a World Cup in the greatest individual tournament performance of all time. Like when Sepp Blatter, the FIFA president, who should be the embodiment of objectivity, who should be the perfect picture of the awards, declared that he liked Messi better, praising Messi like a son & deriding Ronaldo for living his life unapologetically. Those awards are meaningless. Do you know how many South American Best Player awards Tevez had won? Messi won none! Aside from winning 3 World Cups which is a more objective criteria, Pele scored 77 international goals in 92 games. It took Messi almost double that appearance to beat Pele's record. Pele scored 12 goals & assisted 8 in 14 World Cup games, scoring a total of 3 goals over two finals. The award part is ridiculous. Messi couldn't help his team like Argentina won the world Cup at his prime. Everybody can see he was not the best of him in 2022, and how big his contribution was. on the other hand, Maradona proved himself in much harder situations, not only in the world cup, but also in serie A.

Football was much slower in Maradona's era. This was a significant disadvantage for skilled players and also dramatically decreased scoring opportunities. Additionally, no one, including Messi, would win a single trophy with the teams Maradona played for. Because Maradona never played in an ecosystem consisting of big teams and superstar teammates. Therefore, you cannot compare the trophies and goal numbers!

I first watched Maradona just before the 1994 WC in USA and when Maradona got banned after the group stages ,I was so disappointed. He lit up the tournament even at a later stage in his career. The man was on another level compared to everyone else.

One can debate that Diego was even more skillful. But I'd also add in favour of Lio: adaptability, teamwork, resiliency, discipline and professionalism. Diego would never fit in so many differents playing schemas, diff coachs and forwards.

You have to consider that when Maradona played between 1978 and 1994 there were no internet, instagram, youtube and everything else we take for granted today. A lot more people would have aknowledged Maradona if todays technique existed then.

He called evrytime he was in New York City and we went clubbing in after hours and did a lot of Coke! This was early 90s when he retired from playing professionally! Messi would never spend a night buzzing and sniffing, he is still totally devoted to his sport, he's boring, doesn't speak English, unlike Maradona who was life of the party, funny,charming and between the two, I'll take Maradona anytime over Messi! But this discipline made Messi into a monster he became! Overcoming dwarfism with pure will and therapy, training every moment of his life gave Messi longevity, strength and character to overcome his limitations! Both have similar level of talent, Maradona had personality of Alpha mail,Messi is quiet one and let's his work do the talking! I watched both playing in their prime and there's little that separate them,except Messis dedication!

A) Messi is bigger than Maradona, the why and how of it is a different discussion, but the fact is, Messi is 5'7" and weighs 150 pounds, Maradona was 2-3 inches shorter and weighed around the same in his prime. You can visibly see the height difference in pics when Maradona managed Argentina and they're together on the training pitch. B) Messi is also strong, my statement never contradicted that. If you take into account how much more skill dependent and fast football is nowadays, little figured Messi is unmatched by anyone...no matter how amazing Maradona or Pele were back then.

Maradona wase very good but Messi he is N/; 1 with goals and trophy's he is the goat.

Messi and Maradona both are the greatest of the artists, just different in nature. I think Messi is more like Vinci. Great visionary, very precise, creative and composed in every piece of his work. On the other hand, Maradona was like Van Gogh. A magnetic appearance on the pitch who was dreamy and eccentric, a genius kid with the football, guy with an x-factor.

hahaha, so many comments here on players that most have ever seen playing. Romanticising maradona as a player of the past and belittling messi as a player of the present. That's what we humans tend to do. One day messi will also be a player of the past, and then we'll see who was the best.

I like football because of Maradona. I always considered Maradona the best player ever, until one day in 2008 a friend showed me a video of Messi against Getafe. I consider Messi to be the incarnation of Maradona. But day by day, I see Messi increasingly developing and surpassing Maradona. And 1 thing Maradona doesn't have is consistency.

Messi is more humble. He doesn't take medication to enhance his performance.

nah messi neveer awes anyone... he is very good player ... a bit lazy ... always plays the same from right to left ... alwasy stand same place.. and must have great team to do anything since he is very much product of the time... while diego armando maradona was everything ... everything! diego armando maradona was not of this world divine!
