Sketching Pine Cones | How to Draw Complex Objects in a Simple Way

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Join me every Tuesday during Autumn for a technical art chat while I work in my sketchbook. In this video we're talking sketching. How to take an object that's quite complex and learn to sketch it in such a way that you can simplify your sketch and the object is instantly recognisable. I make a quick pencil sketch of a pine cone and then show a couple of other ways you can then draw pine cones from your imagination.

I like the simplified version of things because I tend toward a short attention span. I do appreciate the lengths you go to to get great results. Thanks so much!

Excellent idea and a great help. I've always been quite good at copying things but find it hard to modify, simplify and add my own personality to drawings. Funnily enough, I was looking at some pine cones on my mantelpiece, this morning and vaguely wondering if it would be possible to draw one. Now I know!

I found this really interesting Lou. I rarely use a pencil or pen. When I draw with paint I find it forces me to simplify. But although I prefer a painterly approach, I realise that's not everyone's flavour . - Pabi in Sheffield 🎨💝 👋

That’s interesting, I find drawing with paint hard but wonder if I should try it more. Relying on a pencil sketch can definitely be a comfort zone thing.

Excellent video and series idea. ❤ I find realistic drawing very easy but I struggle with simplifying the shapes as my mind somehow sees it as an error. The times I manage to tell myself to just go for it and not think, I have managed to produce stuff that I really like. It's the same for drawing and painting. So such videos are an excellent help for people like me.

Not sat on the floor no! It’s a vinyl photography backdrop. I’ve got a few so I can change up the look of videos and they wipe clean from paint and ink nicely.

I was curious about the scribble version… why not follow your more spaced out general plan… keeping loose spaces between the seeds?

  • @LouDavis

Not sure I can remember now, but probably because when scribbling, the pen has more of a mind of its own!

I've always loved pinecones. And now it is easier for me. Thank you. 🙏🏻🧡 I have immense trouble drawing and painting simplified. I tend to, but always end up with a lot of detail. I guess that is just my style. I find my own art looks "unfinished" otherwise...but find others simplified artwork finished. Isn't that strange? 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • @LouDavis

I think we have a different relationship with our own art, might be interesting to see how others find your ‘unfinished’ works. I love detail so I’m always tempted to keep adding more and more.

@@LouDavis Same. Others don't see the "flaws" in our work. They don't know what it was supposed to like...and that is sometimes a relief 🤭 although I often "apologise for my "flaws".
