Sketching for Architects and Designers

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video will teach you how to quickly draw like an architect. Everyone should know how to think spatially, not just architects and designers. At its core drawing is a means of communicating ideas. It is a basic skill like reading and writing, or basic arithmetic, yet it is not taught in school. One must go to architecture school to learn this most fundamental thinking tool. As a result, few people can think, draw and communicate spatially. The ability to envision an object or space and be able to manipulate it in one’s mind should be a fundamental skill all people have, not just architects and designers.

Enjoyed this beyond measure... Have a phenomenological "cube" following me since November 1983. Calcutta, Mombasa, Bering Sea...didn't even scratch it. If I had a few billion, I'd buy a remote valley and tumble them into it on a massive scale. Cheers!

For anyone interested, the primary concepts shown here are in the book "Rapid Viz: A New Method for the Rapid Visualization of Ideas" which takes you step by step in developing these skills for visualization. Highly recommended.

I notice you use a pretty nice ink pen in many videos, is there a brand you recommend?

I use a Lamy Safari fountain pen EF for drawing. These cost about $35. Because I use waterproof ink for watercolors, I try to use cheap pens for drawing just in case the ink dries out and ruins the pen. Platinum Plaisir is another low cost solution. For waterproof ink I use Platinum Carbon.

@@robertsarchitecture I am just an amateur artist, but watching the action on it while you're using and the control over line thickness I think it's an upgrade from what I'm using now, haha (a yet-cheaper generic pilot v pen). I buy em in packs of 12 for like $24, but lately working on line quality I find it annoying to switch to finer point pens and redraw lines to get different thicknesses. Thank you!

Excellent video, i've been watching through all your content. I'm looking for drafting paper for my drafting table, do you have any recommendations?

Thanks so much! If you are drafting with pencil I would recommend vellum. (See below.) If you are drafting with ink, I would recommend Mylar. If you use the right ink you can erase with an ink eraser on Mylar. I draw a lot on tracing paper, and watercolor paper. www.amazon.com/CLEARPRINT-Alvin-Cp12101149-Vellum-12101149/dp/B000JM86I2?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1
