Skeptical Atheist Secular Humanism in Canada.

When I was invited to speak at the Shift to Reason conference in Regina Saskatchewan, other secular Humanist skeptical atheist groups asked me to hop over to a couple cities in Alberta while I was in town. Thanks to the Society of Edmonton Atheists, Center For Inquiry in Calgary, and the Mount Royal University Secular Humanists, the Brainstorm Podcast, and also British Columbia Humanists for collaborating on this tour.
When the entire city of Fort McMurray had to be evacuated, we were not that far south of there, in Edmonton. Each of the groups I met with, in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, all took up collections for relief funds. That's because they're not just skeptical atheists; they're secular humanists too.

At least you get inspiring and uplifting ads. I usually just get ads from people who speak worse English than me peddling their brand of woo about some god and how he wants to move in with me. I don't need no mooching gods, dammit!

Another bad speaking foreigner for you. I am Dutch and when I was young (somewhere in the last century and internet was not even a concept) I thought that I and some family members where the only atheists. Now about 25 percent of the Dutch are atheist. Last time religion played a role in our country was in the 70's when abortion was legalized. Yep, we are winning. Get your education in order and your country will as well.

snate56 Thanks for the compliment. It is all a matter of education. A pity your government cut spending on it again but spent billions on the, already, strongest military force in the world. The fact that there are still millions of your people defending this president says enough. Your country scares me.

No matter what good evidence or analogy I used there was no way for that person and his groupies would even consider anything else but there false beliefs. I thought about that situation and tried to look for ways to unlock there stubborn dismissals, and came to the reasonable conclusion that their minds were not open but locked shut by the "key of faith".

I am an Atheist, of course. I don't do the action described by the verb - "to believe in," because it is logically flawed. . Believing in anything stops you from perceiving that thing accurately. For example, people who believe in The Economy do refuse to consider the flaws in the definition of GDP.

+ThePharphis Stefan Molyneux's channel on KZread was the first place I really started to hear about libertarian ideas and he identifies as anarchist. I can kind of understand the moral philosophy he uses to reach this conclusion but he seems to leave out a glaringly obvious fact in his logic: eliminating taxes and minimizing the amount of laws and regulations and any method of enforcing them isn't magically going to cause everyone's inner philanthropist to blossom. He seems to really think that enough people will donate to charities and to volunteer at soup kitchens etc. that everything would be fine if we eliminated welfare and food stamps and Medicare etc., he seems to think there wouldn't be rampant abuse and human rights violations and virtual slavery on the part of corporations if we did away with laws and regulations. It is completely irrational to think a vibrant, successful nation can be maintained with virtually no laws or regulations and a method of enforcing them.

If the god of the bible had been portrayed as a king instead of a God , he would be remembered as the most evil, mass murdering, tyrannical dictator of all time! Christians give the bible god a free pass because, they say, he is god the creator. I don't see the difference whether man or god. +Grant Martin In the US, the libertarians, in as much as they agree on stuff, have some notion that if we got rid of all government presence and influence except for the military/courts, and axed most laws, that this would suddenly lead to a great peace and prosperity, rather than horsemeat and rat turds in your beef, child labor, deadly working conditions, increased poverty, harsher poverty, and bigoted store owners/officials being able to tell black/women/gay/whoever to get the hell out with the full force of the law. There's variations and exceptions, but libertarians have some notion that if society doesn't have some governmental-enforced Minimal Level Of Human Decency, things would be a lot better.

They also believe education should be privatized, and those who were born into poor families shouldn't have education except Google which is heavily unreliable. At least one - in a lesson denouncing socialism as "a humanist belief system" - outright said that humanism is bad and thus socialism is bad because it makes people focus on the problems of this life and not on reaching the next.

I already knew the Bible was full of nonsense and contradictions (because I actually read it once) but I always learn something new from AronRa. Since I was 13 years old I have been unable to understand how anyone can read the Bible and not immediately see that it is pure mythology. I guess it takes either a complete lack of effort (pure lazy blindness) or an incredible amount of effort (apologetics and interpretation) to believe in a bunch of impossible fairy-tales.

+1955RodHot I think it is hard for some people to let go of the idea they will live forever and accept that death is the end.. with no afterlife. That is a pretty scary thing for a lot of folks who have been raised since birth to believe they will never really die. That fear can drive a lot of desperate beliefs.

  • @snate56

That's because, you, at 13, had probably already read mythology, fairy tales, science fiction, etc. Then you pick up the bible and can see the similarities. Someone born into a strict religious family is shielded from that and fed the bible before they are allowed to see what's outside.

Your eyes will be open. You'll grow up." I thought it was an etiological myth attempting to explain why crops grow, why pregnancy hurts, and why snakes have no legs? How can this story be a metaphorical parable and a literal etiological myth, at the same time?

  • @DJ8017

That can easily be explained by Christians saying "god wanted us to obey him and to be mark as his chosen people"... BUT, then they would have to explain 1 Samuel 18:27 about how "David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king's son in law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal to David to be his wife." So, are the Philistines David killed now marked as "god's chosen people"? What kinda sick bastard goes around killing men, then cutting the ends of their dicks off all day? What kinda sick dick measuring bastard god would require on the judgement seat of Christ, to have men whip their dicks out? The story is so beyond ridiculous its hilarious. You want to really piss off door to door evangelists, read this story to them. I've deconverted missionaries by pointing this out. You should have seen the red faces of their wives when I read them what their own "holy book" says. They just can't handle the dick measuring. Hahahaha

The serpent isn't Satan though. If you read the Bible he's never actually referred as such in Genesis. In fact the whole concept of Satan isn't really well defined in the Old Testament. "satan" is just a Hebrew word meaning "adversary", so it's not even really clear whether it's always referring to the same reoccurring character. Like is the "satan" of Job even a "Lord of Lies" or is he just some random guy who questions Job's faith? Really there's no blatant contradiction between Genesis and Job if you just read them as what they are. When you factor in the New Testament and the later doctrine like God's omniscience/omnipotence, Satan (which by himself contradicts omnipotence), etc. then yeah it becomes a mess.
