Skating on Wet Ice

Early season 2019-20 Nordic skating on a lake near Tampere city of Finland. The weather was not attractive for outdoor activities before the trip. It had rained and the ice was expected to be weak and soft due to the high temperature. It took a bit of a rock'n'roll attitude to go out and see what the ice conditions were like. But in the end we found really nice conditions for skating and we got to experience nature in a very unique way.
Finding good ice for skating is not that easy. The most perfect black ice is usually formed at the time of year when it snows a lot. It is challenging to find strong enough ice that is not yet covered by snow. Skating on such ice as shown in this video is often preceded by a rigorous community effort in making and sharing ice observations. Each winter offers different ice and snow conditions, making it impossible to predict the optimal time window several weeks in advance. Most of the time, skating opportunities come with a day or two's notice and good conditions usually only last a few days or even less than a day until another snowfall hits.
WARNING! Skating on natural ice outside of maintained tracks can be life-threatening if you don't have the proper safety gear or skills to observe ice thickness and assess safety in ever-changing conditions, or if you're skating alone. The most important safety measure is to skate with other people who can help if you sink into the ice.
The safety equipment for Nordic skating includes:
- ice claws, for pulling oneself from the water back onto the ice
- ice pole for testing ice strength, sturdier than a regular ski pole (must withstand strokes through thin ice)
- lifeline (rescue cord), which is attached to the shoulder strap of the backpack at shoulder height
- dry bag (inside the backpack) that contains a full set of spare clothes; air is left inside the dry bag so that the backpack floats the skater in the water, making it easier to get back on the ice
- backpack with crotch strap prevents the backpack from riding up on your back when in the water to take full advantage of the backpack's buoyancy effect
- phone in a waterproof pouch that can be used to call for help
Nordic skating should only be started in an experienced company that knows how to assess the safety of local ice conditions. You may join your local Nordic skating club and participate in their safety training or look for guided tours from commercial operators.

This is when it rains on a previously frozen body of water or river/stream. It's such a cool sight. Notice how they play it safe and skate close to the edge of the shoreline as they move. Cool!

It is less safe near the edge… thinner ice, more chance of obstructions poking through the ice and rougher surface… sounds like maybe you haven’t been out on ive before 😂

Its actually safer to stay AWAY from the edges when the ice has been melting. Those are the first to go. its safer in the middle

We used to do the same in Canada playing ice hockey, if you fell through it was only waste deep so you can easily step out, you didn’t dare go home because everyone would make fun of you just keep playing while wet and cold

넘어지면 빠져.
На Кубани 33 года живу замёрзли речки лет 20 назад без ветра, феноменально ровный лёд был! Рубали льдины уже потом когда был ветер, переворачивали и катались на них через всю заводь, куртку как парус делали! До 1 км! И больше такого не было а щас и вода стынет макс2 недели! А это прям шедевр природы!

Очень смело, особенно у берега с камышами, где лед явно тоньше! А если там ключи бьют? Так и уйдешь на скорости под лед!

Осенью 1972г.так же замёрзла Москва река в районе с.Петрово Дальнее , летишь на коньках,а где менялся цвет льда думаешь,что это вода, а шайба летела без остановки от берега до берега , лёд был эдиальный 8-10 см.а Веть это река ,не стоячая вода.

А что вообще происходит? На берегу снега нет. Поверхность больше похоже на воду чем на лед, но чуваки че то не проваливаются. И нахрена им лыжные палки?

@@user-qr1er1en8x после морозов лёд встал на озере и довольно толстый. Потом пришла оттепель. И дождь. Снег растаял и на льду появился слой воды. А лёд всё равно ещё крепкий. Палки для того чтобы отталкиваться ото льда и на случай если провалишься можно палки положить по проруби и не утонуть

This is how i get my exercise in the winter. our ice is a foot and a half thick. When it gets in the upper 30s and 40s the surface ice melts. Over night it refreezes. The next morning is the best time to go. Its like skating on smooth glass.
I remember being a kid amd the river froze near my area. Pretty big river with alot of white water. Rarely freezes cuz it's got such a strong flow. There was literally white water frozen. It was the coolest thing I ever saw. Got to ice skate miles of river. I remember falling going really fast and smashing into rocks that stuck out of the ice. Big boulders. Man that was painful

I would like to learn how to do this here in maine As a kid I remember skating on lakes with hockey skates to get around to ice fishing traps but some lakes and ponds would be bumpy or covered in snow

Yeah, we use nordic skates which are suitable for traveling long distances instead of playing hockey. I think the main markets for nordic skates are Scandinavia and Netherlands.
