I’m seeing comments of people saying the women chose to be scored the same. If that’s the case I think it’s noble that they made that decision. As a spectator who plans on supporting the scene I maintain that as a viewer I would get the most satisfaction were the best tricks of the contest given 9s.

@giftedhater word up dude! I've tried to message you previously and somehow liaise . Nevertheless, we certainly share the same sentiments around a plethora of 'things'. Just wanted to put that out there. Finally, in a proverbial nutshell... in my personal, subjective and humble opinion.. the Olympics were a discredit and bastardization of Skateboarding; the commentators on my particular stream were disingenuous and just reeked of disdain... kinda like the Berrics... place where dreams go to die. Sincerely, 37 year old new subscriber from Cape Town, South Africa. #wordup!

I get your sentiment but its gonna be that much more epic when the scores get higher in future competitions based on the same metric they started with. You will be able to see the progression through the numbers. As you've mentioned, the majority of women in the competition chose this scoring metric so I think it should remain that way.

I don't think that's true. Skateboarding needs the access to the sponsors and money that come with the Olympics just as much as the Olympics needs the young audience that skateboarding brings. Pros shouldn't have to work one or two jobs to make ends meet. The Olympic will bring in the bigger sponsors into skateboarding that will pay pros enough money to make a good living.

Funnily a while ago I was watching some random ass video and this Cariuma brand showed up on it. I searched and discovered some interesting things. A little bit of context here. I'm from Brazil, the country this brand say it's from, and it is... kinda. Anyway, that day I went to their website and was trying to see how to buy this kind of shoe, where was the brazilian website and stuff, because one dollar is 5 reais and I had to see the real price sold to us, since it's a brazilian brand, right? Guess what. They did not have a brazilian website, they did not sell to the country they marketed, basically a "hello, we are eco friendly because we're from brazil", and I guess it sells, specially to "eco woke people" from first world countries. (That took place a few months ago, when they were building their roster. Now they sell here.) After that website thing, I tried searching to see who was behind this company and indeed, it was a brazilian, two in fact, who were 100% corporate, in fact, two of them were directors from Arezzo brand, who is a woman shoe company that has other companies that sells high heels, handbags and this kind of shit. In fact, complete outsiders from skateboard. I gotta say I prefered the drama when nike was trying to get a hold of skateboard in the 2000's. Also, street skating in the olympics was boring as hell, gotta say park was much better. Sorry but I gotta give some love to Pedro Barros, cuz he's a beast.

One major positive for the UK is that we now have official guidelines for skateparks from Skateboard GB. Now there's something that local councils can refer to when getting skateparks built, which will hopefully mean that they're better quality (obviously they should also be speaking to local skaters too). Some skateparks in the UK are un-skateable; metal ramps that are too steep, mini ramps with no flat bottom, etc.

Oski and Andy both were my favourites before and after the olympics, they had great unique runs, but the top 3 was a right desicion from the jury. I just hope that Oski and Andy is what would be on the news when they show clips of skating rather than just spinning as many degrees fast as you can. Skating would look a lot more fun and exotic, and not like snowboarding halfpipe.

The Olympics were pretty interesting for the most part, but mainly the women's contest as you said. I pretty much completely agree with everything here. Oh and about Cariuma being "eco-friendly?" Etnies is CARBON NEGATIVE and was the first skater-owned shoe brand. Support skater-owned, assholes. Luckily, Battle at the Berrics is proving to be more interesting in the fact that almost everyone who's on Cariuma and Bryte is losing to the more core skater-owned sponsored skaters.

@gifted hater Just a note about cariuma. I would also argue that their sustainability efforts are more a marketing ploy than anything else. Their shoes are manufactured in China and their leather & suede is “responsibly” sourced from Argentina, Thailand, Brazil, and China. Leather and rubber are not even close to being a sustainable resource…those are the primary components in their skate shoes, which like most skate shoes are made to be thrown away in a landfill and pollute our top soil and water… cariuma=total green washing and pandering to people who don’t do any research but want to feel like their consumerism is helping to save the world…sorry end rant.

That shirt that said “skateboarding is a crime, not an Olympic sport” sort of summed it up perfectly for me. I enjoyed watching the olympics with my parents and showing them some skating, so I connected with the ironic side of the shirt. But also, what I love in skating (street) IS a crime nine times out of ten. Skateboarding to me is rebellion, and when I see Nyjah wearing an awful Nike graphic shirt that goes past his weirdly tight shorts, with some terrible Nike shoes, sliding down a hubba that’s sponsored by Mountain Dew, it makes my self expression and rebellion feel just that 5% cheaper and less real.

I think it's a trade off with the olympics. Like yeah, more city planners and "normies" will become more open and keen to the idea of skateboarding and it will lead to more skate parks being built in towns where kids have no where to skate. And like you said, it will inspire a broader type of people to pick up a board. But also it will become more detached from the core that made it appealing to a lot of skaters if it starts being seen as more of a contest sport that you train for and is heavily focused on progression, being the best, and comparing yourself to others, like with other established sports. You can't deny the corporate interest will capitalize and benefit the most off of this, but I at least hope with this increasing popularity, a good chunk of the money and attention coming in will trickle into core brands and shops once new skaters (as a consequence of the olympics) start dispersing themselves into the scene and finding their favorite skaters/brands/etc.

@@TipsyFGC Good point. but I think there is a difference between natural progression and the type where you "train", like a lot of kids now are being brought up by their parents to skate and have coaches to compete in contests and the attitude is overall more sporty, as opposed to when there was not a lot of money to be made from skating. It's always kinda been this way but I think with more money and attention coming in, it will head more towards that direction but I could be wrong.

this negative effect of corporate interest getting into skateboarding is event more amplified here in Brazil, where the core skate scene has been near death for the longest time and now skate shops and Brazilian skate brands getting shafted in favor of big corporate overlords. what most people don't understand about the Brazil skate climate is that skateboarding is much, much more criminalized and disrespected here in Brazil. not only does society view skateboarding poorly, but government action and corporate decisions almost seem like they want to kill skateboarding on purpose. it is for this reason that it surprises me seeing Brazilian skateboarders even competing in the Olympics, let alone getting medals. to me that is such an unbelievable achievement considering the shitty situation they've most certainly had to deal with. i look at Kelvin's and Rayssa's silver medals with much more admiration than any gold medal achieved by other athletes that were born in a country with so much more opportunity. but this also makes me worried on the impression that Olympic skateboarding will give to people and most importantly the impact that it will have in the market. i have noticed that people have treated me with a lot more respect since the beginning of the Olympics, and everyone talks about Rayssa when they talk to me. but recently i read some news that Centauro, which is a GIGANTIC sport store here in Brazil (just so you have any idea how big they are, they literally fucking bought Nike Brasil back in 2020), has achieved a 400% increase in sales on skateboarding products ever since Rayssa got the silver medal. Centauro is like a Target for sport products. they sell low quality, cheap products that have no connection to the actual, real sport scene and culture. mass produced by companies that have nothing to do with skateboarding. every shopping mall has a Centauro, and it's the instant go-to store whenever you think anything about sport products. seeing that this is the store that is raking in the most profit off of this potentially great achievement, Brazilian skateboarders making waves in the Olympics, is so fucking devastating to me. we have so many awesome skate brands and skate shops that do so many remarkable awesome things, and they're getting almost no attention compared to the corporate big boys. thank you for reading all this text, and just before you go, i really wanna shoutout a Brazilian skate shoe brand called ÖUS. they make products of insane quality, some of the best I've ever seen, better than Vans and Nike, and they're 100% brazilian. they've engaged in so many community endeavors that i don't have enough space or time to address in this comment. but please, PLEASE check them out, they ship to the US and have been suffering a lot ever since the beginning of the pandemic and it's very disheartening to see that the Brazilian skateboarders in the Olympics have chosen Cariuma and Nike in favor of ÖUS.

This was super insightful to read as an American. That's insane that the core scene has been been on the brink of death and is so stigmatized considering how many legends your nation provided to skating over the years (too many to list here), I definitely wouldn't have assumed that. Did you know the co-founders of Cariuma are from Brazil too? crazy stuff

I think you made a lot of really good points during this video. Especially during the cariuma segment. I’ve heard a lot of people sling a lot of hate at the brand but no one has made some of the points you did about them not supporting shops etc. and specifically the Nike comparison which is a very common on offered up in their defense I think you somewhat addressed. With all that being said, the thing I keep coming back to is I just like the shoes, man. Having tried so many brands and models of shoe it was the one that really clicked with me. And while the “mission” of the brand doesn’t erase all the other detractors you mentioned, at least I can feel somewhat better about buying from them. At the end of the day I’m a skater who started skating again at 27 years years old after not skating since I was a kid. I work in a tech job and I’m basically the opposite of the “core” skater. It took over a year to get respect and make friends at my local park when they saw I was actually putting in the work, and there are still dudes there that don’t see me as a “real” skater. But I have no illusions about that. I’ll always be a dude going to the skatepark every day after work, barely if ever street skating and engaging with skating as a fun activity/hobby rather than a lifestyle. And I wanna do it in shoes I find comfortable and durable. For now that’s cariumas. And I realize I’m directly benefiting from the work that core skaters have put in over decades every time I pull up to my local. I know the only reason that park is there is because skateboarding as a whole was propelled into popularity by people with the love and passion to make it so. I buy all my decks, wheels, trucks etc at my local skate shop (shout out 510 skate shop Berkeley CA) and give back in that way. And I’ll let the core skater figure out the rest I guess. Maybe I represent the gentrification of skateboarding. But I feel like a lot of this is a natural side effect of the work the skaters that came before us put in to fight for the ability to do what they love without being harassed and arrested and ostracized. Anyway just my thoughts. Love the content and can’t wait for the next episode of hateline ABD.

I agree with basically everything said in this video. There is only one thing where i got some points to say: The park contest was alot of fun to watch, because they actually did runs. In the street contest they only did like one or two tricks, get off their board to run a few meters and then drop in again. I think the scoringsystem should value flow of a run much higher, so they might make a small 5-0 grind on the coping of the quarterpipe instead of running 3 meters. Also to enhance that effect, make it 3 runs, one gets deleted and the other two get averaged. Then make it 4 Tricks, two get deleted, other two get averaged. Those two averages added get your total score. This would make them actually land (maybr easier, but still ridicolous) tricks instead of trying stuff 5 times and bail it 4 times. As a non skater, that's really a boring competition to watch. The men were even for me really hard to watch, while the women made it fun. The dutch rider had a style i really liked and Margie Didal really showed that she was having fun doing it. In the park the women once again showed what it all should be about, what a joy to watch!

There should be event focused on ledge skating, manuals possibly? there has to be a way to make other elements of skateboarding in contest interesting enough. I dont understand why they even bother including the runs section if its not even going to contribute towards the final score. They should force the guy to use 1 of those scores if they are going to make us sit through them. The scoring in general sucks. Flip tricks and runs are severely undervalued. 450 flip to front lip wasnt evne a 9 club, nor was kickflip front tail down the "Shogun" rail.

My wife was straight pissed at the scoring system used in the women’s street. One question I have: was the difference in vibe/attitude between the women and men competitions influenced by the lower average age of the skaters in each category, and if so, by how much? I would assume that there would be at least some difference in how the skaters were acting if the average age of men participants was as young as the women average was, and I think that was somewhat evident in the difference between the men’s street and park events.

The amount of insight and accuracy from this video is seriously impressive. The only thing I would disagree with is the women’s scoring issue. The reason I think it should be on the same scale is because over the next 5-10 years, women’s skateboarding is going to progress at an exponential rate. They will start to close that skill gap between women and men since more and more women will be skating and starting at a younger age now. The hardest tricks are the hardest tricks regardless of gender and the score shouldn’t be handicapped. So when they start to score in the high 7s, 8s and more it will be a historic achievement. Also, I think sliding the scale could hurt the competition. There may be a comp coming up soon where the majority of the women are scoring in the 5s and 6s but then one of them lays down an actual 8 or 9. If they slid the scale, then that real 9 will be cheapened and wouldn’t count for what it should.

for me, the olympics immediately became the most important skating contest, purely because of the national element. seeing skaters skate well and represent themselves and their brands is fine, but seeing guys like angelo narvaez and margie didal representing their countries with so much pride made it so much more meaningful.

Cariuma and heart supply have done pretty good for themselves, something like that was bound to happen anyway because it happens in pretty much every sport and they are the ones that are making it happen. Yeah it sucks but it is what it is, don’t hate the player hate the game.
