Take a chance and roll the dice as you embark on a compelling story filled with deadly creatures, branching story and tactical, turn-based combat.
"You drag yourself from the black tides, across the corpses of drowned men, and onto the unwelcoming, craggy shoreline. Gulls cry overhead and the stink of seaweed fills your nose. By some miracle you have made it to Idra. It will take all your skill to survive and unravel the eldritch mysteries of the Black Priory"
SKALD: Against the Black Priory is inspired by roleplaying games of yesteryear, combining modern design and compelling storytelling with authentic 8-bit looks and charms.
Delve into a dark fantasy world, full of deadly creatures, tragic heroes, and lovecraftian horror for an epic retro-style adventure rich in exploration and tactical, turn-based combat.
Do you have what it takes to lead a company of broken heroes from the tainted shores of Idra to the gates of the Black Priory - and beyond?
Lead a band of broken heroes through challenging turn-based combat scenarios as you cleave, blast or stealth your way through deadly enemies of all definitions. Equip your heroes using a modern inventory system, fulfil objectives through quest logs, read journals to discover hidden secrets. And if the action is still a bit too hot to handle, auto-resolve to bypass conflict entirely.
Set in an unforgiving world with lovecraftian horrors and choice-based dialogue, your story will take many unexpected twists and turns. Living life as a mercenary, you’ll need to roll the dice to determine whether you fall prey to certain peril or escape grave danger.
Uncover the grand schemes of the Gallian Empire and explore the vast expanse of Freymark and the Outer Isles. In SKALD: Against the Black Priory, you’ll experience this richly illustrated world of authentic pixel art, built from thousands of hand-drawn tiles and images using a palette inspired by the legendary Commodore 64 computer. Optional CRT filter for true retro aficionados also included.

This man made one of if not the best RPG I've played in years (almost entirely by himself as I understand it), that is written exceptionally well, has incredible artwork, and I hear has a not-insignificant run time of 15-20 hours, all while working a regular day job *and* raising kids. I am blown away. I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll say this: he didn't have to write the game to come out swinging so hard right from the beginning, by which I mean the short but impactful well segment at the mostly abandoned farmstead that serves as the first inn of the game, but he did and I respect him for it immensely.

Skald is SUCH A GREAT GAME! And I'm relieved with this interview because now that I know the developer, I am 100% confident that we are in good hands for the future. Will be following whatever this guy puts out, for SURE.

This game honestly has no business being this good. The Almighty Swen Vincke even shouted out the game and mentioned how much he is enjoying it. I hope it becomes a financial success and more games like it follow suit.

Beat the game a couple days ago. Its my favorite game so far of 2024. This interview was great and it sounds like the developers creative influences are very similar to my own. And e is absolutely right about True Detective season 1 (and only season 1 lol).

I was playing Pool of Radiance and loving it, so imagine my joy when I saw a modernized version of that style. I'm still at the beginning, but I'm enjoying it so much. I had never heard about it, but I bought it as soon as a review appeared. I hope there are sequels, other stories, DLCs. Congratulations to Anders!

Loving the game so far! I have a movie recommend for the dev after hearing some things he likes; It's a noir/lovecraftian movie that came out in 2017 called Residue. It has Matt Frewer (Max Headroom from the eighties) in it. It has a slow start but is a great story if you like the genre. We need more games like yours!

Good things take some time. Skald took its time and we waited, and it paid off 200%. Such a fantastic throwback to old RPGs but also stands on its own without having to rely on nostalgia. Good stuff.

The thing is, the heroic fantasy of the 80s/90s would be fresh today. It’s cynical grimdark nihilism that has overstayed its welcome now. Injecting a return to heroic stories might go a long ways towards lifting the oppressive shroud of despair hanging over so many today. Those games we played as an adolescent growing up exerted a subtle influence on what kind of man we wanted to see ourselves grow into. We’d be fools not to examine what we’re doing to our current adolescents by exchanging the protagonists of heroic fantasy, righting wrongs, living honorable lives, and putting others before self for cynical, violent, damaged, solitary anti-heroes. Wonderful game in every regard, I just bring this up in response to his comment about his writing style taking inspiration more from game of thrones and less from the heroic fantasy of the 90s.

Maybe someone can try it, but if you try to revisit stories like that, they are quite cheesy. These heroes are always so courageous and daring because nothing bad can ever happen to them, they just keep going being heroic forever. They may as well be Superman, who has classically been the most difficult superhero to make into a game because he's so invulnerable. Look at any actual real life people who are considered heroes - war vets, someone who rescued/saved someone else, and they all defer their heroism - "The true heroes are the ones that didn't make it" or "I was just there at the right time, anyone would have done what I did." So, maybe it could have a come back, but right now heroic fantasy feels like a bygone era.

Game's good! I think even if it fails commercially. this guy is gonna get a job at Larian... unless Vincke isn't going to enjoy this, which I doubt. But then it seems the genre's gonna lose like the last guy standing who thinks that C/RPGs and horror work. Which would be a pity. There's been multiple games in the 1990s in particular, even Bloodlines later on.... and then, nothing.
