Skagway Alaska | 2023 | Best of Skagway Excursion

It’s time for our next stop in Alaska: Skagway!
After getting off the ship with our excursion group, we took a shuttle over to Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp where we enjoyed a salmon bake and saw a show about journalism during the gold rush. We then headed back into town to visit the Red Onion Saloon - what used to be one of the finest brothels of that era - where we learned about the history and toasted with champagne.
We then took a scenic ride into Canada where we got on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway - aka the scenic railway of the world - where we had an amazing train ride back into Skagway. The views were breathtaking! After the excursion ended, we walked around port briefing and grabbed some beers and a snack from Skagway Brewing Company before getting back on the ship. Be sure to watch the end of the video - we give a lot of great tips and share helpful information for planning your visit to Skagway.

This is all good to know. We're cruising on Disney to Skagway this summer, have 13 hours in port, but I'm thinking now it still might not be enough time if gift shops close.

It depends on the day and time of year! You can try looking up some of the stores/ research the town!

One thing to always check when planning a cruise is the time the ship will be in port. Big reason I chose Holland America for Alaska is they are in Skagway from 7am to 8pm

Did you consider a different cruise line with longer port times? (Would you in the future?)

We knew we wanted to do Royal but when we eventually go back we want to look into this and another cruise line for sure!!

If you’d have booked with Holland America or Princess you’d have docked right in town (no shuttle needed) plus you’d be in town much longer. Bad decision on your part. Plus no Glacier Bay on Royal Caribbean. It would have been spectacular with the weather you had.

Nope, Royal was right for us! Plus at all the other ports, our ship was priority and the smaller ships were further away and needed a shuttle. So pros and cons of all cruise lines!

What part in Canada did you go from Skagway?

We took a bus up to Fraser where we were checked by Canadian customs and then got on the train that took us back to Skagway.
