For this ocarina, we used ordinary red clay, which we can buy in our Latvian ceramic shop or order. Firing temperature ~900"C-1000''C. Good Luck!

I was able to translate all the comments by going to Google translate, taking screenshots and miraculously.... Google translated them showing the English words right on the same background as the original Latvian was! Amazing!!

Thank You for nice comment! Yes, this one has 7 holes. Unfortunately for all of us, there is no easier way to do this, because of unpredictable wall thickness, and also some other factors. You can try 4 hole bird for begining - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYOrs4-kirLIebQ.html For ocarina tunig You can use any chromatic tuner, I used ''DaTuner" for Android phone, some years ago it was free app.'-)

I know you got it to be in tune before firing, but usually ceramics shrink 10% with each firing so doesn’t the pitch change too?

Basically it's not a problem, because You can intonate this type of instruments by intensity of blowing

Hello.'-) When we started making clay tools, about 15 years ago, we had similar problems. The main thing is that the clay must be dry enough to create a geometrically accurate wind channel directed exactly at the sharpened edge of the whistle. As another comment asked about English translation, I'm just interested at the part of the video were it said something about 900-1000C. Is that step saying that it needs to be put in a kiln at that temperature?

It means the desired firing temperature, but this process is carried out gradually, starting with the lowest. And to achieve the dark tone, glowing clay birds can be shoveled into wood chips and covered with them to limit oxygen supply. But this can only be done with an oven in which the door can be opened forward, and this must be done VERY CAREFULLY! Thank You for your very careful viewing!
