Hi Austin, just needed to say thank you for your effort, generosity and shared knowledge. I'm building guitars for almost 20 years, and CNC was science fiction to me, but watching your videos and learning from them made me finally deciding on buying a machine (which I'm putting together at the moment) and spending time learning Fusion 360. At first it seemed like a huge thing to deal with, but I have learned a lot from you so I can put my ideas and wishes to reality now. It seemed like impossible goal, but I'm finally close to start making chips this way. Love your work, you make the world a better place. Lot of builders keep the knowledge for themselves and would not share the advice or tricks, but you are something else. Keep up with great work!

Thanks once again Austin. Great. work. I just used your V2 fretboard and transition videos for a new guitar design. About add the body chamfers ;). You have made so many complex tasks far easier. Now using 3 point curves and surface patches all over the shop!!

This model is awesome! One recommendation: I don't think the recessed nut slot was intended to have a curved bottom, but by offsetting the cut from the radiused FB surface, the nut slot ends up following that radius.

Another great video, an order of magnitude better than any fretboard I have ever designed in fusion. I especially like how you did the fret positions. The last time I tried that, I entered each fret as a parameter which ended up a little clunky.

Appreciate all the effort you put into these videos! looking forward to the stuff you put out in the future, I'm supper happy I'm at I point I can keep up with these videos. I started this guitar class series with your V2 Parametric fret board, parametric modeling seems pretty valuable so I'm taking a deep dive on that. That said I'm finding it a little difficult finding my footing learning across all of these revision videos. Could you do a culmination video of all the revisional insights you made over these videos, and do a full guitar parametric modeling video start to finish? Or maybe model a Ukulele, since they're smaller, should go faster than a full guitar start to finish. Even if the video ended up being 2 hours long I'd love to sit through it! Hi Austin, Great videos and Knowledge. There is a slip up on the theory of how you have the compound fretboard setup. I have been a long time player of Jacksons and being a science person myself, I had to look into what compound radius is all about. When 12/16 compound is chosen, It makes the heel thicker than the nut. You have the heel fretboard thickness as the locked thickness, which makes the heel end thicker than the Nut. On a Compound/Conical fretboard the Heel is always thinner than the Nut. This creates a quasi "Fall Away" which can't happen when the heel is thicker than the nut.

I want to say, Thank you very much for everything you do. I learned a lot from the videos and the projects you provide us. In the future, in project V4, will it be possible to separate separately the parameters 1. distance from the string to the edge, and 2. distance from the edge of the neck to the beginning of the fret cut? Of course, I’ll try to do it myself, but that’s in the future, while I’m still studying.

Wow. I did almost this exact thing a couple of years ago in F360. I went so far as to model the frets and the strings so I could know the ideal clearance and such. Yours is more polished that mine, but if you want, I can send you a copy for your perusal. Maybe there’s some ideas in there that might help with version 4? 😅 And no, I don’t care about credit or anything. Just interested in an exchange of knowledge. Very cool project. Austin you are the rock star of guitar modelling... thanks so much. I'm going to use the file as part of an acoustic guitar design. Acoustic guitar bridge saddles have very limited adjustment. The Fretboard Outline Sketch can be used to reference the saddle relative to the fretboard, but string length compensation needs to be added. I usually get this value from the Stewmac fret position calculator. Does anyone know if there is a formula for calculating the compensation value?

Hello Austin, i was looking at the Cam_trace_toolpath_shelf_nut sketch and I notice that the path is off of center from the Fret_slot_overhang sketch and going past the stated blind fret slot I entered, thanks for your time. i am learning a lot from your channel as of late.

I would suggest support for 25+ frets. I am fooling around with it now and it does not appear to go above 24. Incredible work, thanks.

Any way to use this to make a lefty multiscale fretboard? I'm very very brand new to any sort of modeling software. When I tried inverting the scale values, it wouldn't work properly

Hi Austin, a timely video as I have just recently been watching many of your excellent videos again prior to starting to model something in Fusion360. I do have a couple of suggestions and they may be relatively easy things to adjust which you may find useful. 1. Per Edge_Gap these could often be wider on the bass side versus the treble side for example, per a stratocaster neck blueprint drawing it shows 0.145" on the bass side and 0.140" on the treble side from the centre line of each string. So perhaps a Low_Edge_Gap and High_Edge_Gap may be an idea. 2. The next thing I assume for compound radii, the arc is at 90 degrees to the centre line. Though the larger radius at the last fret FB_Radius_Heel, perhaps another option would be FB_Radius_Bridge which would create a perfect cone cross-section between the nut and bridge, so for example if using a Schaller Lockmeister trem with a 16" radius and a 10" radius locking nut this would enable something somewhere towards the end of the fretboard dependent on the number of frets a dimension probably of approx 14" give or take automatically. Hopefully this makes sense. Anyway, just a couple of ideas I thought may be of interest. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the feedback! This is great. I love custom edge gap per side idea. I thought about including an option for true string and edge gap spacing that would take into acount string gauge for example, but wasn't sure if that is how most people do it or not. So i left it out on this version. As for the heel/nut radii, the challenge here is two competing interests. perfect arc on centerline, or constant edge height. You achieve both when using a single scale length, but with multiscale, it moves the heel arc just ever so slightly out of position if you want constant edge height. I went with constant edge height by defining the arcs by where they meet with the edge.

@@austinshaner Thanks Austin, the edge from the centre of the string should work for most gauges, and then of course someone could choose what seems appropriate. I see what you mean about constant edge height with multiscale. It was more for single scale length that I was thinking of.

Question...along the same theme as the scale length should be dimensioned from the LowE and HighE string paths...should the fret location dimensions also be from the paths or from fretboard edges?

You have the Z-Axis in the wrong orientation in the GrabCAD model. Do you know how to change the Coordination system withouth ahving to flip the model itself? I searched for hours but can't find anyting. And I have built a very complex model using the wrong orientation. I don't want to start from sratch. Thanks man!

Hi Austin. Thanks for your videos. I'm having an issue with the scale length using V3. I have it set for 25.5" for a Strat style. When I put a canvas of a Strat body to check the bridge placement, it falls short even though it is scaled properly. Any thoughts?

Hi Austin, thank you so much for sharing this great model, however I have an issue, I don't know how to not use the zero fret, in simple term how to model a fretboard with no recessed nut (let's say Gibson style) and with no zero fret, in FX parameters I have 0 for the value of Zero_Fret_Offset but I have half of the zero fret tang, I have the metric model from Feb 5th 2023, only appears Zero Fret, No Slots and Zero Fret, with Slots in Bodies

Hi Austin! Can you tell how did you create parameters to the vertical fret? I made my own fretboard model just for practising, but couldn't figure that out.

Hi Tuomas! Check out my V2 fretboard video. I cover this feature in detail. That feature remained unchanged other than ensuring it was dimensioned on the string path, rather than a simple vertical dimension.

Just downloaded from GrabCAD and started playing with this. Gotta trouble you with a Newbie basic question... If I wanted to start a new guitar design file and bring in your Parametric Fingerboard file as its own (non-parent) component, how would I do that? (I'll then create additional components for Body and Neck/Headstock. Bonus points if you can also tell me how to do that with the origin as the center of the 12th fret and Z=0 at the apex of the fingerboard radius! Thanks, Austin. I appreciate you.

Anytime I create a new design, I do one of two things. Either create a copy of the parametric fretboard and start drawing my body in that new file... or insert my fretboard file into a new design, and then right click that component and say "break link". This will break the link to the original, and bring in all the features/parameters into the new design. Unfortunately, due to how i modeled this design, Moving the origin to 12th fret Z0 radius apex will be extremely difficult and time consuming. Not worth the trouble for any limited gain you may get imo.

In the file on grabcad there are only two bodies enabled at the start, but the others are there in the timeline. You just have to right click them and unsuppress. It should be the last 3 items in the timeline. If you hover over them it will tell you what they are.

Hi Austin! Great job by the way! I just uploaded the file on grabcad and there is only the zero frets, no slots and with slots in the bodies folder?! Is this an old version or incomplete? And there's a special reason why you build the fretboard on X and Z axis instead on X-Y? Thank you !

All three versions are in that file. In the bottom right of the timeline, there are three groups, two of which are suppressed. Simply right click your desired group and unsuppress it

I tend to buy bits from specific manufacturers, rather than specific retailers. My 1/4" upcut and downcut or ballbose bits are CMT, Amana, or Freud off of Amazon. My fret slotting bit is a 4 flute .023" from Kodiak Tools (Amazon, or their website). My 1/8th" bits are typically just cheap options on Amazon because I expect to break those often. Any other bits like chamfer, dovetail etc I grab from my local woodcraft or rockler store.

What about blind fret slots, where the slots don't go all the way to the edge of the fretboard?

I'm not sure what you mean. fx 3? If you mean why didn't I show the formulas for the high E set on bottom like I did the top. I was just summarizing the changes rather than creating a tutorial like previous versions. With how many changes I made the video would be an hour and a half or more long. That being said, they are the same formulas, just replace Low_scale with High_scale. So High_scale-(High_scale/(2^(1/12))) and so forth.

Had to stare at that timestamp a while haha, i think I understand what you are asking. Are you asking about how the dimensions on bottom go 1,2,3,4 but the top skips 3? Nothing was actually skipped, it's just that the spacing between the top and bottom sets of dimensions are different because they were set to different scale lengths. Not all of the numbers fall in numerical order like that. On the top for example there are two 11s, the spacing wasn't enough to push it into the next round number.

Unfortunately not without updating all the dimensions, formulas, and parameters. However, in each parameter field you can type a metric value, such as 600mm, and fusion will auto convert it to inches. So you can still use metric values but it won't display correctly. I plan on making a natively metric version soon, as this is a common request. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Hi Austin, thanks for all your work over the years. I have certainly benefitted from a lot of your F360 machinations! However [there was always a however of course], your fretboard calculator is based on slightly incorrect theory, sorry, but there you have it. Frets should be lofted onto the [angled] edges of the fretboard, from a defined centreline. Drafting them out along the fretboard edges introduces an error, I think it is an error of parallax. It is indeed a very small error, less than a tenth of a mm across a 647.7 scale length for example, your[ scale length of 647.7 is actually a scale length of 647.641] but it is still an error and one that should be noted. I can demonstrate this with F360; please PM me if you would like to debate further, disagree etc. Otherwise thanks very much.

Austin, I may be doing something wrong with v3 but I'm trying to create a fretboard for a soprano ukulele. I bought a plan from GenOne and they specify a scale of 13.625 inches. When I configure parameters in your code for a 17 fret instrument it appears that the first fret is shorter than the second fret. The GenOne plan lists the distance from the nut to the first fret as .765" but your code generates the distance at .651". When I generate a fretboard with your previous template, the first fret distance is .765". I'm a huge fan of yours and I appreciate the fact that you share your knowledge and your able to communicate so well. Thanks for all that you do!!

@Jeff Nobis I had a friend look at it while I was at work. He was able to build what you described without issue, and it measured .765. To the first fret on both the high and low strings. Did you by chance make any changes to the formulas in the fret position sketch? You should only need to modify the parameters, but nothing else.

Sorry for the delayed response. I did reload the v3 download and problems still exist. My zip file download was done on 1/31/23 and the only parameters that I changed were: number of strings = 4 number of frets = 17 low scale = 13.625 high scale = 13.625 first fret is .651" second fret is .722" Let me know if there other parameters that I've overlooked. Thanks Austin!

Offset Face from the heel end of the fretboard to add more material, and then Sketch and Extrude>Cut your access hole. Seems the simplest way to go about it.

I wanted to add that, as I exclusively use spoke wheels on my designs, but didn't want to to limit others with it. There is one frets worth of excess material already added behind the last fret. You can cut your access into that section.

Well come to find out Fusion 360 won't work with my Next Wave CnC. Only Vcarve and Aspire. Sorry about my whinging earlier.

Fusion is compatible with next wave CNC. You just need the appropriate post processor so Fusion can export the appropriate file. Manufacturers often provide this, but if one is not available, many people in the community write their own that you should be able to find online. I would be surprised if no one had written a post processor for those machines.

@@austinshaner well I looked and haven't been able to find one. Contacted Next Wave and they said they only provide pp for vectric software but I could write my own. I'm just learning how to run the machine let alone know how to write a pp. LOL

@@patruddiman4228 Ouch :( I remember back when I built my x-carve a moment of panic where I realized I needed a F360 post processor and had to hunt one down. Thankfully inventables had one. I'd say just focus on learning your CNC right now, there is a bit of a learning curve to CNC. You'll crash it many times and learn what to/not to do in order to be successful and happy with the machine. You may be able to take your F360 design and import it into Vcarve. I haven't tried that though.
