Six Flags Over Texas: The Rise and Fall

UPDATE: Six Flags has officially announced that Six Flags Over Texas will indeed be getting a Mack Power Splash in 2020. Although it is a solid addition, they are advertising it as the parks newest coaster (which it really only is via technicality; it more so resembles a glorified log flume with a launch). This greatly concerns me as they may use this as an excuse to not give the park anything significant for the next 5-10 years. If this happens, it could result in the park falling into even deeper despair. I sincerely hope this is not the case...

If they were smart they would invest in parking garages or purchase nearby vacant buildings and utilize the old parking lot for new rides that goes for both Sixflags over Texas and Hurricane Harbor. They also need to create a master plan for both parks

This is exactly what I've been thinking. Lole they have a huge parking lot. Why not invest in a nice big maybe tall parking structure. Its hot as he'll in Texas. I remember as a kid being so exhausted from being in the park all day and then you have to walk allllll the way back to your car. I'm pretty sure they could make a parking structure and uses the rest of the parking lot to add on to the park and make more cooler roller coasters. I'm low key jealous of Magic Mountain. They have so many cool ground breaking rides and they're not even an original six flags lol. I always thought our park should be getting all the cool biggest bestest roller costers especially now that Arlington is like an entertainment capital of our state haha.

A big part of the park's stupid themeing degradation was the forced political removal of the "confederate" area. When they decided to erase history and eliminate the confederacy, they left an out of place area in the middle of the park. Then the DC universe dominates the east quarter, which doesn't fit in with the over all theme of the park. But hey, at least it's not as weird as the theming in Fiesta Texas.

There were also a lot of big name concerts at the Texas amphitheater right there in the park. The flashback was my favorite coaster back then. Haven't been since new Texas giant opened.

    1. Expand the park north, across the highway, between I30 and Lamar - Buy out the businesses between Lamar and I30 - Build a monorail over the interstate (or chunnel under it) - This is far-fetched... but when you're land locked, you gotta think outside the box (not slap another label on it) 2. Build parking garages - stack the cars and develop into existing parking...much space currently wasted for parking. 3. (Probably will get shot for this one) Drain the lake and expand the park up to the Judge. Or build rides over the lake. 4. Restore the park. Call the rides whatever you like, but restore the park to how it looked back in the 70s and 80s. 5. Raise ticket prices (a little) and limit the daily occupancy. Crap rides are one thing... waiting hours for crap rides... no thanks. 6. Touch the Runaway Mine Train AND WE RIOT! 7. Good video. Good historical look. Thank you. The park was my stomping grounds from bicentennial up through the 80s.

Interesting! first saw Six Flags over Texas as it originally was. The history of the state as shown in the park was fascinating back then. If you “oof” at 1861-1865, remember that the park opened just as the US was commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Civil War, and that was a big deal then, all around the US. I remember Skull Island, Casa Magnetica, the dancing tamales, Spelunkers, the noisy old cars - and not a roller coaster in sight!

I've got another one of my own attraction ideas. This would be a great movie ride-eque ride called"The Magic of Musicals" and would be a trackless dark ride that would take riders through 4 of broadway's most famous musicals: West Side Story, Phantom of The Opera, Hamilton and Les Miserables. The facade would look like the old abandoned Majestic Theatre, which was once a grand and elaborate theatre that was the best place to be in town back in the day, but is now alone and decrepit. The inside reflects this, with the lobby having cobwebs everywhere and brochures for shows that have long since left town. Here you would also see some details foreshadowing the ride ahead, with a portrait of Alexander Hamilton and a french beret on a hat stand. You then go through the staff doors of the theatre lobby and go to the backstage entrance. Here, an animatronic of an usher appears and tells you: "Y'know, this place used to be magical. Families would sit down in the seats and enjoy the magic of musicals. Let's see if we can bring that magic back to life." He then blow on his hand and a projection of some magic dust flies around the room and goes through the backstage door. The guests then go backstage to the station that's made to look like backstage with a red curtain at the back and props of various shows lying around. The guests then board the vehicles, made to look like theatre booths, and set of on an adventure. After going through a tunnel of lights, they find themselves in the streets of New York where they hear some snapping. As they pass down an alleyway, the snapping gets louder and louder until they eventually go around a corner and see animatronics of the jets dancing as the theme to the opening of West Side Story plays. After this scene, the guests pass down another alleyway and end up in another tunnel of lights as they transition to the next scene. After that light tunnel, the guest find themselves in the sewers of Paris as an animatronic of Christine sing the title song from phantom of the opera. They then go further into the sewer when they see the iconic moment when Phantom and Christine are on the boat, singing the chorus. the guests then go into another light tunnel to the next scene. The guests suddenly find themselves in the battlefields of the American revolution, with an animatronic of Alexander Hamilton singing the first verse of I'm not throwing away my shot while surrounded by British soldiers. Suddenly, he joined by the his fellow rebels as they sing the chorus and the British soldiers fall one by one every time they sing the word shot. Once the song ends, the guest go into another light tunnel for the last scene of the ride. This scene would be the biggest with the most animatronics and would be an epic finale to the ride. The guests would find themselves in the streets of 19th century Paris when they see Jean Valjean singing the opening to one day more. as the song builds up, the different animatronics of the different characters all light up to sing their part. As the music builds up, all the animatronics light up one by one until everyone is singing together on the barricades with one person waving the revolutionary flag. After the epic conclusion is finished, the guests go through the final light tunnel and find themselves in front of the stage of the theatre. They see the usher once again as he says "Well, we certainly had some fun tonight, didn't we? Join us sometime again as we travel through the magic of musicals once more." He then takes a final bow and fades into dust. The guest then exit their booths into the "Usnavi's Food and Merchandise Bodega" gift shop, themed to the musical In The Heights. Here they can buy merchandise from many different musicals. This idea was a blast to make as I am a huge fan of musicals, especially Les Miserables and Hamilton. I don't know if you know any of these musicals, but if you don't, definitely check them out as West Side Story has a relevant tale of racism in a difficult time, Phantom of The Opera is a timeless tragic love story, Hamilton just kicks ass and Les Miserables is an epic and enduring tale about a man on a quest to redeem himself. I hope you enjoy it.

Dude, I was sold as soon as you said it was going to be a Great Movie Ride type attraction, but with musicals. I am a sucker for musicals and the four you picked to be in the ride are some of my favorites. One that I think has been culturally significant enough to appear in this kind of ride would be Wicked, so if you were to add a fifth that would be my vote. All of the scenes you laid out for each musical not only are extremely loyal to the source material, but are also iconic enough moments that people who haven't seen the musical can still enjoy them. And this may just be greedy of me, but I'd like to see another scene from the Phantom of the Opera just cause I love it so dang much! Anyways, great idea and definitely one I would ride over and over again!

@@AttractionIdeas I haven't seen wicked so I don't have an idea for an additional scene. I was thinking about doing a scene from Cats with a scene based on the Mr Mistoffelees song, but I also haven't seen Cats and I'm pretty sure not a lot of people are fans of it after that CGI monstrosity that was the movie trailer. Also, I couldn't decide if the animatronics would be actual cats or actors dressed like cats so I just ended up scrapping that scene.

I worked at six flags over Texas last year, and it was a disaster. I was a ride operator, so I knew about all the errors on the rides. First though the park always smells & it’s not the best when asking if it’s clean or not. Also most of the workers don’t give a rats ass what’s happening. They don’t care about if they see guests walking while smoking, they don’t care if anyone needs help. The park itself is really sad, most of the time the new rides would be shut down due to “difficulties”. It would be so much better if everything was just properly checked

Yeah, it seems like a lot of Six Flags parks struggle with building a good company culture for their in-park employees. Maybe they should take some notes from Disney and Universal where people will happily work a job that doesn't even pay enough to cover their expenses, just because they want to work there so badly.

I actually have a attraction idea for Six Flags to put in the France section of the park! It would be called "Le Boats". Le Boats would be a family dark ride themed to you being on a French Rivera Boat, touring famous sights in France! You enter the lobby (which the entrance building being themed to a French Rivera house) which will show (in the queue) facts about historical sites in France! There will be a animatronic of a Frenchman, telling you ride instructions in a French accent. One you reach the station, you enter your boat, and enter the dark ride portion of the ride. The first scene you enter is a French town, famous for its art museum. As you enter the museum, an animatronic mime saying in sign: "Look de art is le wonderful!" The next scene, and believe it or not the finale, is Paris. As you see the wonders of the city, you finally go under the Eifel Tower. You exit into the gift shop, (themed to a French bakery) which sells many French goods and Le Boats merchandise. I hope you liked my idea! Au revoir!

At first when I saw you were suggesting a themed boat ride for Six Flags, I thought you were crazy. But then I read the details of your idea. With the ride being so short I could actually see it being something Six Flags would do. Wouldn’t cost a lot of money, wouldn’t take up a lot of space, and would be a great, unique attraction! Not only am I a fan of this idea, but I think there’s a chance could realistically be made.

When I was a kid, it had such a home town old school them park vibe. The wooden coasters, looney toons, Sam Houston train, turkey legs.... it WAS Texas. I would have chosen it over Disney world any day Then in the mid 2000s, it fell apart. Couldn’t pay me to go back these days. Janky low budget coasters, food is nearly three times the price of Disney world food, and you’re treated like a number instead of a guest. Shortly after the Batman and mr freeze addition, you could tell the park was going down hill. I do miss the Texas giant, judge Roy, and the shock wave

I used to work at SFOT and can say for sure that they have removed some beloved rides to place a flat boring one. For example, the power splash ride actually replaced splashdown, which was used a lot by guests to cool off during our insane 100+ degree summers. They recently added a ride called El Diablo which is literally just a loop... One loop... that you loop around multiple times. The log flume ride hasn't been fully operational in a very long time. It used to have two loading stations and tracks. Now they only use one and the other sits there abandoned, full of leaves. I know they have space they could utilize, like the old amphitheatre which they now only use during fright fest as a giant haunted house walkthrough. I don't think a DC section of the park is a bad thing if those themes were kept in the gotham area of the park... But now, to profit from the resurgence of DC movies, they are slapping DC character names anywhere they can all over the place. Not to mention, MOST of the time, rides are closed due to various reasons. I can't tell you how many times I've had a guest come up to me to ask why the titan or texas giant was closed... Ma'am I do not know... They don't tell me anything.

@@AttractionIdeas you could have fun with it and a long video it's another inspiration for Mr. Wynn for SFOT and at one time was Premier parks and the Six Flags corporate office and at that time with their corporate office right next door didn't care about the park. It has it's dark history that people here groaned badly when Six Flags took back over management of the park. Frontier City in it's beginning is a pioneer park for the modern day theme park. It was a themepark before SDC, and Six Flags Over Texas. It was one of the first theme parks outside of Disneyland. You can say it was one of the firsts. Knott's is the other first theme park outside of Disneyland. Frontier City has a very interesting history behind it's gate. From being one of the biggest attractions on Route 66. It was at one time a destination park like Disneyland. Do you research on the park it is a interesting back story.

Nice video.... could have used more photos of the original park in my opinion. Angus G. Wynne didnt go to the Greast Southwest Corp. for funding. He WAS The Great Southwest Corp as CEO. The development he was trying to fund was The Great Southwest Industrial District on the opposite side of the freeway from SFOT. The first momey maker he built was The Great Southwest Lanes. A bowling center that was located about where Harley Quinn sits today. He also developed The Great Southwest Golf Club and The Inn of the Six Flags. Of course he was rich enough to go to Disneyland. Arlington mayor Tom Vandergriff went to California to try to nudge Walt Disney into building a second Disnyland in Arlington, but he turned the offer down. It was Vandergriff who then told Angus about Disneland and urged him to check it out to see if Angus thought a park like that would work in Arlington. As far as the Big Bend is concerned, you completely left out one major factor in its removal in 1979. Yes, one person stood up and fell into some bushes.... But riding the ride just to prove you did and not die is hogwash. The ride was popular. EXTREMELY popular. From day one the lines for The Big Bend were very long. The Big Bend started with three cars per train, with a maximum of 6 riders per car for a total of 18 per train. That worked fine until the maintenance issues reared their ugly heads. The electric motors in the cars that pulled the trains up the spiral lift-hills were giving out, plus the wear and tear on the track caused by the added weight of the motors caused SFOT to cut the number of cars from three to two. Now the maximum riders was reduced to 12. This made the throughput worse. Back in the 70's, the average daily attendance was around 15K - 20K. With that many people in the park and most of them wanting to ride The Big Bend, the lines got longer and longer....upwards to 3 hours. Through the queue house, out into the streets, across the bridge and almost to the front gate (not hearsay..... I lived it). The line grew on some days to 3-hours in wait time. So to ride it twice, you would literally spend half of your day in line for the coaster. Not exactly getting you money's worth of park time. That was the main reason for its removal. Over popularity.

I agree with your view. I grew up loving this park based on Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 and rcdb. I thought of it as the best of the 3 Texas six flags parks (when there were 3). Astroworld was my home park, and I visited Fiesta Texas way before visiting here. I still think it has a better coaster collection than SFFT, but the area of the park just past Gotham feels super lame. And sometimes 2 of those flat rides aren’t even operating. It feels cheap, like a carnival. Also Tony Hawk had the Boom Boom Huck Jam in the early 2000s 🤷🏻‍♂️ there’s the “boom” town reference

Technically, they could allowing new construction above or around the pond for a new restaurant, a couple of rides, and games. However; I do think they need to make some new renovations or remove the rides; such as, Log Flume and the Judge Roy Scream. I don’t like the idea how they a cramming new rides in a small space; such as, El Diablo. Hopefully, they will be improving the new park soon.

I’m trying to figure out why all this means that park is failing. While everything you say is true to a point, the park is still going strong. I’ve been going every year for 24 years. It’s still just as great today. The only thing that has gone down hill I say is the fact that season passes are so affordable, parents use the park as a day care during the summer and it’s packed full of kids. Mostly annoying teenagers. But other than that, I still really enjoy the park. And by how crowded it always is, I’d say I’m not the only one who thinks so. My fiancé and I will always have season passes. And we’re super excited that they will now be open year round. Now we can go on weekends during the school year when it won’t be as crowded or hot. Just because something changes over time doesn’t mean it’s falling. I mean that was almost 60 years ago it opened. This a different time period. Of course it’s going to change. I don’t think the park would be doing as good if it was the same as it was when it opened. I mean really. Who’s going to enjoy an area of the park that’s not nothing but oil themed stuff and no rides? That’s right. No one.

6 flags corp. & Six Flags Over Texas (are NOT one in the same) Six Flags over Texas is independently owned, so is Six Flags Atlanta. There were lawsuits over the 6 flags name + Atlanta had to sue 6flags corp. over NOT adding new ride during 1996 Olympics. Yes! Texas was a unique park back in the day. It needs lots of TLC to make it "somewhat" more true to its roots. They did however rename Confederacy (Old South) way ahead of all of the controversy over the subject matter of late. There really never was much in the section other than a restaurant, live show & Spee Lunkers Cave (which was a fan fav.) The messed that up with a WB property. I also applaud the fact that they still run the steam locomotives. I agree PG added & PLot used 4 expansion.

This is a really good dive into the downfall of six flags over Texas, but having it be the closest amusement park to me since childhood has shown some major unfavorable things about the park that contribute to its downfall to this day. For starters, the park lacks any upkeep. Whenever I visit, rides are constantly down (I don't think I've ever seen the side of El Aserado with the actual saw open), areas of the park smell like gasoline or sewage, they never use their massive arenas for anything besides fright fest, and if they don't want to upkeep a ride, they shut it down. One of the two dark rides, Yosemite Sam's Gold River Adventure, was shut down after flooding because six flags didn't want to pay for repairs and maintain the classic attraction. I've seen spider webs, cobwebs, and spider eggs on nearly every single attraction. The sight lines are also abhorrent, as you can see backstage areas, unthemed areas, and the highway construction from nearly every area of the park. The exit to Runaway Mountain is through a door to a side of the building that is completely unthemed. The waterfall on the facade of that ride is never even working. The only reason I still go is for the coasters, as it is the ugliest and least kempt six flags park I have visited. P.S. They lie in the queue spiel for Runaway Mine Train, declaring it the world's first tubular steel coaster, despite opening nearly a year after the Matterhorn at Disneyland.

This is my home park and yeah it’s sad that Six Flags doesn’t seem to care much about improving the quality of the park. Attendance has drastically dropped, there aren’t any “new and unique” attractions not since NTG. The Power Splash looks fun but yeah it’ll be an excuse for them to not try to build anything else as far as a big coaster goes for at least 5 plus years. We’ll probably get some random flat ride that’ll just be a clone of other rides at other parks. If Six Flags really wants to make more money and not go bankrupt they need to diversify their parks and make each of them distinct and unique from each other so it gives enthusiasts a reason to come. I get the GP probably doesn’t care but most people just don’t seem to be as interested in amusement parks as they used to be.

The Runaway Mine Train is probably fine due to being a good family ride and historic landmark. Flume 1 is the one to be concerned about however.
