Sivuca = Genius !! In the late 1960's, Sivuca was on tour, playing accompanist guitar with singer Harry Belafonte. After finishing a concert in Portland, Oregon, he found his way to the after hours jazz jam session at a small coffee house on the other side of town, where all the hip jazz players hung out after their night gigs ended. When he walked in carrying an accordion case, we all had to contain ourselves from laughing. With his long flowing white hair and beard, he looked like some kind of Swedish Santa Claus fresh from the polka dance. As we hung out in the kitchen sipping coffee, Sivuca opened up his accordion case and took out a marijuana joint the size of foot-long hot dog. He lit the monster, and began to puff away, as the rest of us, along with the patrons in the place, inhaled the second-hand smoke. It was like central air conditioning for stoners...everyone enjoyed the benefits as the smoke permeated our collective wonder. He soon put out the ganja cigar and strapped on his accordion, walking up to the stage as he joined the drummer, bassist and piano player. Sivuca called the tune.."Wave" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, a Brazilian standard which we all knew. As he started the tune in a very bright and brisk tempo, our mouths fell open and our eyes bugged out in disbelief about what was unfolding. This seemingly folksy little polka-playing Swedish Santa Claus turned into a super-charged Brazilian skyrocket, as the roof came off the place and we flew on a magic carpet ride through the stratosphere into fantasies of jazz, only dreamed of by the gods on Mount Olympus. Sivuca scat-sang perfect unisons as he fired the notes in tandem on his accordion. The sheer electricity of his sound was overwhelming. It was the most incredible and thrilling sound any of us had ever heard from voice and accordion in the jazz idiom. A virtuoso musician doubling his improvisation with perfect high energy scating. People were literally lifted out of their seats, dancing and swaying to the magic of this phenomenal music. Instant Carnival, a la Rio De Janeiro ! Marijuana or not, the music and the energy Sivuca brought to us that night was so captivating, so spell-binding, so thrilling, that when we all finally parted company, we were left wanting so much more of his soulful ambrosia. To this day, even decades later, I cannot recall any musical experience that was so impressive, so electrifying and so memorable. I was lucky to be accompanying him on piano that night. A once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Se tocou piano com Sivuca teve o privilégio de tocar com um monstro musical. Cada frase musical dele pode inspirar outras músicas.

Amazing!!!
Sometimes he blends his voice so well when he's doubling the accordion it almost sounds like a synthesizer especially when he's playing behind Putte, the clarinet player...its wonderful.
Anos ouvindo Sivuca e nunca me canso. Como um Nordestino sertanejo raiz comecei ouvir Sivuca na minha adolescência.
i met Sivuca once. His handshake was like an iron vise. Amazing musician
What a lovely sounding voice
Salve Paraíba! Salve Itabaiana! Salve o meu nordeste! Salve o Brasil! Salve Sivuca!
In most styles you can say its been done before. In this case its not been done before but even more. Its not going to be done again. Accordion and simultaneous scat singing. Note for note. Sivuca. Great.
I loved Sivuca as a child in the 60ies. He was always on the radio in Sweden. The Swedish artists were two of the best, too.
@2:24 how in the hell does he do it. Lol. That is fast, precise, jazzy scattin'. Fantastic
Master musician and genius. No one like him.
