Thanks for the vid, always appreciate insight into others' kit. Does BlackOvis sell the bino harness or did I hear you say you made some mods to the Adak?

No we don't. It a handmade harness that Kendall built using the back of the Adak. It's very similar to the Rick Young harness.

I saw your video on mid season layering. I'm new to saddle hunting and was wondering how difficult is it to add or remove a jacket or layer while in the saddle?

Nope not hard at all. The harness sits down on your waist. If you use the back rest you just need to unhook it for easier use.

One thing no one seems to discuss is what they use for pants. Also it would help to know what temp range you're using for each item. Mid season in the Upper Peninsula Michigan is going to be vastly different than mid season in the Piedmont region of Georgia. I know you said Kentucky, but not being from that area, I have no clue the regional weather there.

Yeah that makes sense. We'll consider more of a temperature rating on the next Sitka WT review, and we need to do a video just on pants!

I'm in south central PA and my bottom layers are generally the light weight merino bottoms or the heavy depending on temps. I then layer the Equinox pants down to about 45 degrees. If it's colder than that, I will add the Equinox Midi pants, which are amazingly warm and comfortable. I usually wear the Equinox pants over the Midi as a protection layer in the event I have to push thru briars to track a deer but they add little in the way of warmth over the Midi. Colder temps or wind and it's Stratus Bibs on top. I prefer the bibs over pants for colder weather because they're just more practical and can be worn over just a base layer if you want, making any other pants redundant. So... base layer, either or Equinox bottom and Stratus bibs. My tops are similar to Kendall's: base Merino layer by temp, Fanatic hoodie, Fanatic light or Stratus jacket by temps and the Celsius if colder. One change-up I made last year was adding the Sub Alpine Cold Weather Hoodie to my mix to replace the Fanatic hoodie and Celsius in the coldest weather... one less layer as warm as the other two combined... thicker hood is big plus as well.

I'm also 6'4" can I ask what size your celsius midi is? My fanatic hoody is XL but it's a little big. I weigh about 215-220 just wondering what size to snag whole they're on sale. Thanks!

XL is probably a great option still. Plus it's going over other pieces.

will a merino t shirt hamper the wicking performance of a core synthetic base layer? trying to perfect this system before I dive in. thanks

  • @BlackOvis

Yeah the merino would make it harder to wick for the synthetic, but it still will.

I watch these just for ideas. On how to layer and what to get then I go find items kinda like that for less money. Sitka is way overpriced. The only thing I bought Sitka was a ballistic beanie because It was on sale. Nice beanie but not full price of $75 nice.
