I really enjoy the variety of building science strategies and resulting technology standards employed in the various regions, as showcased on this channel. As a New England and New York resident during my 1st 30 yrs, I’m accustomed to homes that were constructed under those more robust bldg codes, where as having lived my 2nd 30yrs in TN, GA, NC, TX and now btwn AR, FL and NY, I’m enjoying seeing the new bldg science tech being applied to the prior regional practices - so much to learn and then adapt to! W/ that said, I do hope y’all plan on showing this home as the building stages progress?

this is an awesome video, I really believe this style of constructed SIP will be the way to go going forward in a lot of high wind and seismic zones.

best shingle crew I've seen installed all the trim, first, and then painted it in place, then put up the shingles.

Really like Wade’s content. He builds a nice house

as a person who's had to work with SIP, I fully approve framing the house and then putting SIP on the outside.

Is it truely a structural insulated panel if the shear load is satisfied with the CDX?

@@jwiereng I had the same question but to give them the benefit of the doubt they're probably referring to the entire finished assembly (studs+CDX+Zip R) as a "SIP" - an excusable bit of clickbait.

This method is exactly what I am doing on my barn roof in Seguin in a couple weeks.

Do you have to fasten into the studs for this application, or will just hitting the CDX with screws through the Zip work?

We need this insulated wall jackets in Georgia too. We got the heat and humidity to deal with.

When they say “leaded” copper is it really lead? If so I’m surprised that is something that can be used where little hands can reach it.

Matt, I'm looking at doing a similar detail on a build with 5/8 plywood sheathing and r6 zip on top - any thoughts on how this affects how hardie board is fastened? Does it have to hit stud or can it be attached through the plywood and zip alone?

Matt; Would really like to see a segment on how these windows get finished off on the inside. Love the design of them schuco windows and i do understand how to install them but the mystery for me is how are they finished out on the inside. The sheetrock and trim....how do they look when finished. Windows that are deeply set into the frameing.

If the wall panels (studs+CDX) were already being assembled off-site, why wouldn't they apply the ZIP-R during that construction phase? And reduce the amount of subsequent seam-taping and detailing on-site?

I live on the coast of SC where we design to 140mph +, and Huber tells me that I can use ZIP R as a shear panel.

Matt, can you explain a bit more about the need for "shear"? My understanding was that ZIP-R by itself was essentially CD plywood with extra stuff, so why is that not enough shear strength?

He explained it in a previous video. Basically the thicker the foam the less shear it can take because the plywood doesn’t work as well when it’s spaced off the house. So Zip with 1” of foam has a higher shear rating than Zip with 2” of foam. If you sheath the whole house first that plywood has no foam and thus the highest shear rating. Then the zip is only there as weather barrier and insulation.

Wait.. they put a layer of insulation on the outside of a SIP panel? That has how many inches of uninterrupted insulation sandwiched in between OSB sheathing? Isn't that like putting a jacket on top of coat? Very confused...

It sounded like the local code wouldn't allow the zip to count for shear because it has to fasten through the foam (cantilever off the framing). I presume for shear value they require sheathing fastened directly to the framing.

it looks like you can get shear rated ZIP panels, but it's most likely easier to install shear panels, then tack zip over it, so you don't have to stitch the zip on and have 100 steel fasteners being thermal bridges through the zip. where I live, depending on house design, there are places they have to have 5/8 CDx on the outside AND 1/2 CDX on the inside both with nails on 4 inch centers around the perimeter, and 12 inch centers in the field.

So these walls essentially have three layers of sheathing. That's a lot of wood. I know Wade is proud of the speed but I think I would have pushed the homeowners towards an ICF house. It would be even better against the wind, and the salt, and the water, no thermal bridging, etc.

Not really SIP unless the ZipR was bonded to the prefab plywood with a roll on or screeded adhesive of some sort. SIP starts with structural. It was wrong to say structure, foam, structure as if the OSB or ply IS structure, it is not. It is the sandwich composite that makes a SIP structural.

I've never heard his name pernounced like that. Everyone I know with that name says Paquin (PACK-when)

I thought it was horrible mortar, but it’s weathered insulation poking out around the poured foundation behind them… what’s the final detail on that area and how does it tie to the water table trim??

shingles? storypoles, 4x8 stainless would make better shingles

Why do some of the windows not have Zip Flashing Tape around their openings? (Note: My comment is not a complaint; Rather, I am asking so I can learn)
