I think this is more of a family facade than a “golden child” situation. OP clearly stated that she and her sister hate each other’s guts with no clear reason why. And her parents did nothing about it, not even family therapy I’m guessing. These folks would rather let their daughters’ mutual hatred grow and fake a happy family than deal with the underlying issue.

It could also be that the parents focus too much on reputation. This is a fresher intake than the golden child theory but that theory still stands. I think the reason why the sister got away with her serial cheating is that she didn't do it with people close to their family. If this theory is true, then the moment it is the family members gossiping then she would be in trouble. Op never clarified her sister's reputation in the family, but if the parents only want good reputation, then the sister must have a decent enough reputation towards family. I wonder if the parents would have sided with her if she got exposed on her own (ex a pregnancy drama). Too bad we don't know if the sister is being berated as well since her reputation in the family is ruined now. I hope Op was right about her parents just wanting to preserve their reputation because that means the parents have their own karma as well, being that the sister is now exposed, and their other child ran away from home shortly after. If it were the golden child scenario then they wouldn't feel it as much.

I have 2 theories on why the parents reacted the way they did to OP doing the right thing. 1. They were trying to uphold a public image of being "the perfect family" to their community and people finding out that one of their daughters is a serial cheater will tarnish their reputation, so when OP did what she did the parents saw that as instant betrayal because ppl's perception of them has been altered forever. 2. One if not both parents have cheated at one point in their lives and defend Melissa so much over it because cheaters look out for each other.

Not necessarily because in the past I have read several stories on Reddit about siblings who were in similar stories only to find out that they were a affair kid and the parents let the daughter or son's actions slide for whatever reason. Plus there was just stories where the guilty party was just simply the golden child who could do no wrong. I seen a bunch.

Melissa had everything. She had a loving fiancé whom she was gonna marry, but decided to throw it all away because she was depraved and wanted to one up her sister. Parents have shown OP who’s their favorite and it’s clearly not her.

At first I thought this story was fake, especially with the old "accidentally hit record", but going on a 5 minute tangent to rant against commenters insisting OP had a crush on Theo absolutely sounds like authentic reddit content.

Op saved Theo from a marriage that was going to fall apart anyway and like most cheaters Melissa would drag it out and make herself look like the victim and ask for alimony payments to fund her lifestyle.

But as a society we need to learn that in at least 90% of the times a kid behaves that badly, it's either some trauma or the parents fault. The fault may not be intentional, most parents try to do good. But then unintentionally favor one kid over the other, creating a toxic dynamic in the proces. Again, while meaning well, maybe even starting small, but spiraling out of control. And then, when shit hits the fan, they usually blatantly pick the favored kid. The mother's rant was ridiculous. The op wasn't just jealous of her sister, they were jealous of each other. They were locked in a vicious rivalry their entire lives, and it left them with a lot of bad blood. But to give op her credit, she actually tried to reach out. Her sister, on the other hand, did not. She didn’t want to make peace, she didn’t want to be a family, she wanted to be the best. And maybe what the op did WAS out of spite, and honestly, I believe it. But at this point, who cares?
