My theory is the people who own next door homes took the man's squalor as an excuse to lowball the owners of the neighboring homes. In fact they may have put him up to it or enabled his condition for their ends. Its like the guy who paid someone to squat in a place he wanted to buy for cheap to put pressure on the sellers and drive down the price. Anyway everyone on the block is doing a victory lap now all their homes are worth at least another $250K all at the anonymous taxpayers expense. Never let a good crisis go to waste. The only bad thing is clean air is going to smell funny to them for the next few weeks after years of smelling rotting garbage.

@@angelamarie88I am saying the speculator developers who built the homes next door probably got the original bungalows for a song because they were next to a blighted property. No one wants to live next to something like that and they most certainly do not enjoy it. Its just that the developers likely used this situation to their advantage. I am sure most of the neighbors were horrified but you would want to sabotage the values of the home in the neighborhood if you wanted to buy a home in the neighborhood for a significant discount and then have the problem solved at the city's expense making your home go up in value in the process. The long time residents are not sabotaging anything. Like most people they just want to live quietly and be left alone. A real estate developer may use google earth to find really run down homes and try to buy them homes next door for a discount since those people feel they could not sell their homes otherwise. Hope this makes sense from a predatory capitalist standpoint. Nothing I have tried myself. I am not that clever. There was something a long time ago called blockbusting where realtors would go into white neighborhoods and spread rumors that black people were moving in. All the white people would sell at a discount and the realtors would re-sell the properties at a nice profit.

I saw another story about this same house earlier in the week and the neighbor right behind him has been in their home for over 30 years. They said they built a wall in the rear of their property after this guy started filling his yard with trash hoping that would give a better barrier to the piles of garbage and rodents. With interest rates so high and they are probably getting older, they probably don’t want to get another mortgage. My husband and I are in our 30th year in our house and retirement is coming up and we don’t want to deal with a mortgage. Plus, imagine trying to sell a house that borders a garbage dump. The story I read gave the name of the street the house was on and i found the street view of it that was dated over a year ago and the front yard, while overgrown, had been cleared of trash. The aerial view showed the backyard was full of it. I’m not sure who had helped him clear the front yard before, if it was family or somebody hired, but it’s insane how much the trash has built up again.

The thing is that without clear and _ongoing_ intervention, this man will begin to trash-hoard again as soon as he can. This is an instance where a person needs to be 'involuntarily committed' to a psychiatric hospital for a thorough evaluation and intensive treatment. Out of all the hoarding "modes" animal hoarding and this, trash hoarding, have got to be the worst.

Mayor,I appreciate your heart of compassion and swift actions! Neighbors, onlookers: just remember, this could happen to anyone. And things like this will probably keep happening more and more frequently as the affluent continue to project their perfectionistic standards on the more sensitive and afflicted populations that don’t have the resources to look perfect on the outside. Please have mercy on this person. No one likes a mess, but just because you look good on the outside doesn’t mean you’re perfect. Judgemental, angry thoughts, words, and actions are much more toxic to the human body and brain than tons of trash. Prayers, well wishes,& helpful actions help immensely more than lamenting. Be grateful that by the grace of God this isn’t happening to you. Thank you.🙏

There are way worse places than this guys house. I figure the people who built the Miami Beach mc mansions next door actually thank the hoarder. They probably got a huge discount buying the neighboring properties when they were just modest bungalows next to a trash house. That is probably why they let it go on for so long. They profited handsomely from this guys squalor and that is why they didn't send a couple of nightclub bouncers to teach him basic sanitation. Too bad no one hangs out in Melrose any more. Frankly it wasn't even that cool in the early 90s. Think of how much these places would be worth if that were the case.
