Maniac he was only seeing because he and Ebert used to have a "Dog of the Week" segment on their show, so he didn't consider himself to be "on-duty." I'm a big fan of Maniac, both the original and remake, but I can understand Gene's reaction. It was pretty shocking and grotesque for it's time and it's much easier to appreciate now since we've had so many forgettable slasher movies come out since then. Freddy, Jason, Pinhead and Michael Myers have practically become mascots now, so overexposed that they've lost all their menace. Maniac stands out as a gritty and nasty look into the world of a much more plausible killer.

    Maniac is a great grindhouse slasher flick especially the scene Gene walked out on. Really good smart 2012 remake that is to the 1980 William Lustig original what The Beat That My Heart Skipped is to Fingers. Elijah Wood doesn't lfill Joe Spinell's shoes because the way it's shot he doesn;t have to, master stroke.

  • @AdamF89

    @AdamF89

    The Maniac remake was really good, it’s actually really smart because it’s taking what could be considered very grungy low-brow 80s slasher aesthetic and then not only sets the remake in the art world, but the visuals themselves are really clean and then the technical achievement of having most of it POV. So it’s still wanton violence and typical slasher kills but makes it something different

    The only funny thing Chris Farley did that wasn't based on him being a large guy doing physical things, was his awkward interviewer character on SNL. Lorne Michaels said those skits represented Farley's true personality but sadly Farley obviously felt he had to be the fat man falling down for people to like him. John Belushi was his hero but Belushi's weight or size was rarely the joke and when it was, it was clever (ordering four whole chickens at Aretha Franklin's soul food restaurant). Likewise John Candy. Yes, some of the humour was around his size but it was always done with affection. Candy was a physical comedian but you never saw him do demeaning stuff like Farley was stuck with. The industry failed Chris Farley.

    Ebert missed a window there....when Siskel said he'd rather turn his head and cough then it cut to Ebert - would have been so funny if he was just putting on a surgical glove.

    Well, only because of his tragic death. But honestly, Farley really wasn't very funny. He did, though, give it everything he had which is laudable.
