SIREN! | Carterton Fire Station Siren | Sounding for call-out

On a recent trip to the Wairarapa, I was lucky enough to catch the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade siren sounding off, in response to a Fire Alarm going off in a nearby building.

There’s one on top of the Cambridge Town Hall, presumably the best location as it’s high up and central for the local volunteers to hear all over town.

This fire siren in Carterton means calling the firemen to the fire station for a call out because an Air Raid siren is great is better than Carter sirens.

Hello my friend told me about a 2801 siren down in kapiti but he didn't know where it is. Would you perhaps know where it is?

@@HotForgeChaosinteresting warning signal for fires. Sounds just like our old flood siren signal in Norfolk and essex uk. This signal was used by a scottish factory and also at a chemical works somewhere down south. The European fire stations also use this signal like germany douse but they have single tone sirens and electronic speaker sirens

That's not how these sirens work. These fire sirens are mechanical sirens - the rotors (cylinders with holes in the sides) spin at high speed inside a stationary cylinder with identical holes.....air rushes in through the main opening at the end and out the smaller holes......becuase the inner cylinder is spinning and out one is not, the holes are like little doors opening and closing hundreds of times a second, and it is that which causes the sound. The fast the rotor spins, the louder the siren gets (and the higher the pitch gets). The sound is actually coming out of the small holes, and not the big curricular one at the end. There are no sound chips, not speakers, so no you cannot play music through one. You can get modern electronic sirens that are like giant speakers that could (in theory) play music, but FENZ still chooses to purchase these classic mechanical sirens. This technology has been around since the 1940s and is still popular to this day.

what siren type is this one ? it looks like a british made, early castle castings siren or some sort of early cold war carter ?!

Pretty much. They're a Carter or a copy of a Carter siren.

@@HotForgeChaos im pretty sure its an early carter, with a ? possibly early but later on motor ?.. but i cant tell without seeing some closeups, also if it has a brooks motor on it then its a british made siren most likely

@@matthewwalker8197it’s likely a Castle Castings or a Carrell Electrade siren. Nz mandated that air raid sirens be used at all volunteer fire stations In 2019, so they installed og sirens along with local knock-offs (made by Carell along with PSL fire safety) so this could be one of the copies. It does look like an old castle castings since it has grooves in the middle (rather than a Carter which has a smoother middle)

@@0ne-6right40 i dont believe it is, even though you cant see it too clearly, i see now what could be a name on the end plate, that would indicate it would most likely mean its a Carter or even a Secomak. Then theres the motor base, classic wartime/early cold war type. However the motor type looks like a Brooks motor and most makes in this time frame would have used Brooks motors or a similar motor made by them. However, in this time frame it can also be hard to tell between a Castle and a Carter as Carter apparently became Castle Castings in i believe the 50s or 60s, so that would date this to the 1950 or 1960s, Unless the motor was changed out at some stage. So.. I believe this to be a later Carter or early Castle Castings unless proven otherwise
