Hey Everyone! Today we're going to be tackling the balance and neck dive on our Sire P5 Five String with a set of Gotoh GB528 tuners! Unlike the Hipshot Ultralite upgrades that we've done in the past, these don't require drilling any new holes and will utilize the existing screw holes! Best of all, they are even lighter than the ultralites! Let's install these and see how big of an impact they make on the weight and balance
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

One other little trick/tip I’d like to mention is , when changing the tuners but still keeping the same strings, I like to capo the strings at the first fret before unwinding them. That helps keep them right there in position to easily re install on the new tuning machines without all the mess and tangling when the strings are just dangling loose.
All mod projects greatly appreciated . Thanks Mr Lobster
Indeed, no more neck dive on my U5 with those! Thanks!
Thank you Lobster! I did the same thing on my V7 for the neck drop.
Taking delivery of a P5R 5 string tomorrow. This looks like a worthy upgrade. Thanks Lobster!
Just did this on my U5 and neck dive has gone! Thanks for this!
Thanks Lobster. I was thinking about changing the tuners on my p7 fretless to Hipshot ultralite, but I am not good at drilling. It is very good to see this video. I will upgrade to Gotoh instead.
Very nice Bass, especially with that Tuner upgrade!
This is a great video. Thank you Will. I upgraded my Sire with the Hipshots, i also bought the adapters, but the adapters are made of an heavier material which ends up defeating the whole purpose of the lightweigt tuners, I ended up using your taping technique. IOt's a good thing there are better alternatives out there for rthe Sire's.
This video would greatly benefit from before and after pictures of the back of the headstock.

Did the mod on my P5 4-string and it made a HUGE difference in reducing the dive. The bass is very level with virtually no tug. Great suggestion and great vid! Thanks for excellent suggestion!

This was a lifesaver, i was really considering sending my P5 back because the neck diving was impossible to bare. I never did a mod before, but i just had to follow this video and now i have a perfectly aceptable balance. Thanks Lobster!

I'm so glad this worked out for you! It's way easier than the Hipshot mod for sure. I've been doing this on all of my Sires minus the ones I'm keeping 100% stock.
Thank you, Lobster! I'm always hesitant to drill any holes in any of my basses
That's a really nice upgrade. I may add those to my Sire V5 4-string. Thanks!

I did this on my Sire P5 4 string as well, it's a great upgrade!
I lucked into a set of these in black from a TBer who didn’t know what he had, I think for $15 lol. They’re on a project PJ build right now, just need to route for the J pickup and wire it up. Good tuners!
Thanks Lobster! I just ordered a set for my V3P 5 string as I was not happy with the tuners.

Did you end up doing it? I also have that bass and am considering it.
I usually love your videos, but I feel this video might be more useful if it had contained closeup shots of the back of the headstock during the installation, instead of a wide shot of the front, or at the very least a closeup still of the back after installation. As it is we don't really see the tuners, don't really see the process, and don't really see the result.
Thank you very much for the informative and interesting videos! You are the best! So, do I understand correctly that this is a drop-in replacement for a Sire u5 too?
I just got the Gotoh 201B-4 bridge for my P5. It has the Fender screw pattern, so I did have to drill. It was almost too small. I was gonna throw it on my cnz jazz mini, which I converted to a fretless 😅
Neat trick with the socket as a bushing pusher.
@LowEndLobster
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It works so well. I've seen some SCARY pics of damaged headstocks from people trying to pry the bushings out. I wanted to stress on here that the socket method is way easier and you won't damage the bass.
@billholder1330
Жыл бұрын
@@LowEndLobster Yeah, great if you have access to the back of the bushing. I do have a bushing lifter winch gadget from StewMac for the closed back kind of bushing (Gibson bridge studs, etc.), but the socket is a better solution here.
Excellent!
You can use paper glue mixed with wood dust to fill the screw holes, to prevent some moisture.
Great video
I did that with my Fender Mono Neon. The bass is so much better balanced with light tuners. I used the Sandberg aluminium ultra light tuners, I think they are the lightest on the market. Expensive, but very good !!!

@FrowinIckler

@@priceth Hi! Yes you have to drill one hole per tuner into the headstock. No big deal. And if you want to switch back to the original tuners, the holes will be covered by the tuners ;-)

@@priceth You're welcome :-) And related to the Fender tuners you'll save around 62grams per tuner, thats overall 310g with a 5 string bass!
I get the weight loss advantage. Nice to have a 5 string that weighs less than 9 pounds! But, I've played Fender basses since the late 60s, and I've never cared about neck dive. Maybe I'm strange, but when I'm playing, I actually have my hands on the bass. So the neck never dives!
Another great LEL video! Do you know if the tuners the same on the V5 as i'd like to change them to get the same results?
Thank you so much for this video, very informative. I have a Sire P7 and a V7, both 5 strings and yes they do tend to dive, so like you said, the Gotoh GB528 will eliminate those neck dives 🙏🏾🕺🏾, question, will straplocks(Dunlop) help as well? Thank you.
thank you for the info mr.lobster , i have a u5 and a p10 the top's are almost identical. i would love to find a RM neck for the u5 or have one made. what do you think of that for a upgrade project?
I’ve been considering changing the tuners on my Sire U5 to improve the balance. Any idea if these Gotoh tuners would be a direct swap in that bass too (I.E. use the exist screw holes)?
I bought some Fender ultra-lights and they actually weigh more than the Mexican tuners!
I love my P5, but the neck dive has been troubling. I was hoping there was a drop-in replacement (no painter's tape!). Thanks for the video.

great bass, but great neck diving. Thanks Lobster!
Gotoh makes supremely good hardware, Both of my Atelier Z Beta 6's have them. Reso-lite hardware is I dare say better than quality and weight relief than Hipshot.
Hi Lobster, thank you for the video! Is this Gotoh GB528 a drop in even for Sire V5 or there are other tuner machine who requires no drill? Thanks in advance for your help
Off topic question for Mr. Lobs or any knowledgeable person: what is the real bang for your buck sibling in the sterling family? The ray34 has gorgeous finishes (blue sparkle, Neptune blue and cherry burst, namely), but they are a bit pricey and maybe not worth the price.
I'm thinking of doing this mod to my P5 4-string. A couple of questions, given that it's only 4 strings, will the weight/balance differential be noticeable and is there enough space to use the old screws to fill the screw holes or are they too flush with the tuner? Thanks for this mod that will hopefully make playing this cool bass even more fun and comfortable.
This is my biggest problem with my Marcus Miller 5 string too! Where can I get these tuners at??
when a rewiew of the new v5r and v3p?
Would these drop into a jack casady?
Hello. Thank you for the video. I want to change the tuners on my Sire Marcus Miller D5, I'm looking for more affordable tuners. Do you have any idea? Thx
Great video as per usual but where’s the cats on the intro?.. :)
I use a 3.5" leather strap. Works with any bass.
Which lightweight tuners would install on a sterling sub4?
I measured the tuner hole on my V5 at 18mm. The Gotoh bushing is 16mm according to a reverb listing. Did yours fit snug? Or was it loose and need something extra?
Can I use them on my Yamaha BB1025X? That bass neck seriously dives 😩
These Tuners seem to be impossible to find right now. Goes anybody have a source?
Hi there @LowEndLobster , I would like to change the Headstock for a V3 second generation, do you know if I should go for those Gotoh GB528 ? Also I 'd like to go for a D Tuner would you have any reference ? Thank you for your attention. Greats vids and tutos !

Not worth the $100 for the little bit of neck dive. I actually never even considered neck dive until I watched Lobster. Haha I use standard 2” nylon straps so there must be enough friction with those. To each is own. 👍

You don't understand the subject, but already claiming "it's not worth it". I don't get it. Try playing some well-balanced instrument and you'll get the feeling Don't forget those tuners will also increase the tuning stability and reduce overall weight of the instrument - easier to handle.
