Sir Ken Robinson - Leading a Learning Revolution

Sir Ken Robinson provides the closing statement for the LWF 12 conference under the theme "leading a learning revolution".
Reforms are required for our industrial scale education systems but what forms shall they take, what will they value and what purpose shall they serve?
In closing the LWF 12 conference Sir Ken Robinson reflects on what has been heard and discussed with previous speakers and offers a call to action for the delegates to look at the future with a new determination based upon the challenges that future generations face and where our education systems will need to nurture the creative innovators upon which our future well-being will be placed.
Presented at the Learning Without Frontiers Conference, London, 26th January 2012.

Sir Ken Robinson, I'm 15 years old and you've been my idol since I was a little girl who had always hated the education system and even wanted to drop out :)) Thank you for your speeches, they are so wonderful and inspiring! Watching your video, I hope that one day my generations will enjoy a better education.

I know exactly how you feel. I'm a teacher and I'm constantly trying to change our school and how we teach our students. The problem is that management are old school and are resistant to change. I'm really disheartened as I am told every day that I'm not teaching the 'right' way. Problem being, I don't see standing up the front of the class and teling students what to do/ what to learn as the right way. In addition... teachers like me will never be management as we are non conformists.

Important quote: "Be the change you wish to see." - believed to have been said by Gandhi. And i really hope you have heard of Noam Chomsky ( as mentioned in this video. ) Blessed to have intellectuals like Robinson and Chomsky, all their knowledge and views at a young age. Their words can have astonishing effects.

(cont.) As educators/educators to be, we are now starting to be taught to be guided by the children and their families and to co-operate with them rather than to control them. Thank you for your talks and I agree with them 100%. Listening to them makes me proud to be an educator of the next generation, so thank you.

If you can understand this man's ideas and get what he is saying ... you've probably outgrown school and are now ready for the serious learning that usually takes place elsewhere. Having worked in education myself at a few different levels (school, special school, further ed and university), I have seen enough to give me the screaming shits about what is happening to education all over. Your comment was a speck of light in a dark desert. You love clearly learning. You're an awesome student.

21 minute we can customize education to the individual. I especially like this quote "If you are the teacher, you are the education system for those kids." 22 minute Revolution comes from the bottom If you wait for the government, you are not part of the solution. At minute 19: "Many teachers think that they can do very little to bring about changes in education." Ken Robinson says, "You can change the world of education for those students immediately if you choose to."

Absolutely, absolutely. "descriptive, not judgemental". Too often do I see judgements being passed instead of describing what the judgement was made on or how it came into being. There exists overnumber of opinions rather than neutral observations. And we know neutral stance toward someone should be the common behaviour towards others.

At the age of 4 I knew about single celled organisms like Amoeba's and began drawing continuously. By 6 I developed a passion for Dinosaurs. At this age I was drawing 3D dinosaurs with perspectives where most my age were still drawing blob faces. By the age of 9 I had memorized over 400 separate species of Dinosaur's and everything about them. I also knew about continental shifts. Scored perfect 6's on SAT's. Now I serve coffee for a living thanks to crap education. I wanted to be Archaeologist.

@bavwill I think you're right, that could be one of the biggest challenges. Adults are living in a world which was told to them, leaving them apathetic about posibility and diversity, measuring success in terms of how much money you can make ..... it's a definite corroboration of the need to have this revolution. I also think we need a big political revolution, same principles aply, the goal must be social balance - not financial growth.

@bavwill 2. This shift in power is due to the appearance of more schools and with it more competition. Schools now seem to be in the desperate situation of having to operate as a business, much like a restaurant where parents involvement would be comparable to a really touchy food critic whose expertise and interest in food does not go far beyond the fast food section. They demand service and yet what they need to realise is that the most important part of education starts at home.

@trombilly 1. It may be that right now, everyone's focus is on the race to get as much as they can as fast as possible before this rumoured and yet possible economic collapse comes. It's predictable that people would choose wealth as their power in times of crisis. Perhaps they see a better standard of education for all as a threat to their way of life as it brings in more competition and less security. They view social balance as something that requires too great a sacrifice.

Minute 25: education was seen as a solitary activity --- the teacher is alone in front of students. WE NEED MENTORS in the classroom and via phone and email, connected to students. "Talk about this lesson with your mentors. how does this lesson connect with your special interest of auto mechanics or becoming a health care worker?" MINUTE 21 about PERSONALIZED "The education system for any student is the classroom they sit in. If you are a teacher, you are the education system for those kids. So you can change the world of education for them immediately if you choose to." Minute 22 "If enough of us do this, that adds up to a social movement." COLLABORATION is important says Ken Robinson Shift from Passive reception of information to ACTIVE LEARNING. (minute 26) Standardized tests encourages passive reception. THIS REVOLUTION IS ALREADY HAPPENING. (minute 28)...

@trombilly So with social balance resulting in an increase in competition, this may have a crippling effect on opportunities within society as those in the know, know how to cut corners better than the rest. My first hand experience is that this is rampant in developing countries and largely ignored. It's bad news for the middle class in developed nations. Higher qualifications and cheaper workers are taking over and with the corruption card still in the deck, change is a long time coming.

@bavwill If it doesn't, then peer pressure ultimately becomes the educator in life and the mind shaper. So with the resulting disinterest in learning, it's no less a direct result of neglect on the part of the parent. "Work" is not an excuse, especially when many view mindlessly passive mass media, or the march of the droves down the pub as the done thing. That's a sad continuation of bad leadership. Parents want to be empowered, want the best for their kids but refuse to accept responsibility.

  • @bavwill

@bavwill 4. It's all well and good talking about a technological revolution, which I think Ken is hinting at but if you look at the E-learning rooms you'll find that it operates in much the same way as the real world, Facebook and Farmville. Hey, "Mummy even plays it when she gets back from work". If you restrict these things in your school, your a tyrant and with plenty to back that argument up, you won't have much of a future in the business.

Nice concept but it is clearly a jet plane’s view of education and disconnected with the facts on the ground . Education at least in the US is determined largely by zip code( economic and social position of the family, friends and neighborhoods ) of the students . When students come into the higher grades without the prerequisites and study skills to be able to take prescribed courses which the pacing , content and depth are not in the teacher’ s control poor student results adversely affect teachers .

Agreed, but wouldn't this be a spiritual revolution not primarily a political one? Society needs to have a change of heart which can be reflected by political practice. But this has been a problem ever since the industrial revolution, larger cities leading to the death of communities and the rise of the individual. I don't think it's right to say 'let's not focus on financial growth', but let financial growth be compatible with social responsiblity, planning for the future, building community

  • @bavwill

    1. But if teachers were to encourage students in a non-linear way, then isn't there a risk of them becoming isolated within the 'grande' scheme of things. Schools are fundamentally conformist and therefore unhealthy given the state of the majorities mindset. It's a mindset that no longer sees the school having authority. That's fine but it also sees the school no longer having any power. The majority are the parents and as they say, "the customer is always right".

He's talking about inter-disciplinary, integrated and creative teaching. His overall body of work is trying to address all the intelligent people who are sloughed off by our outmoded, cookie-cutter education system. I know because I was one of them. Turns out I have ADHD pretty bad, but the principle is the same. If trying to account for people like me is "transformation marxist" then I think you live in a very narrow world. Not everything is overtly political. Don't be so cynical.

Actually im in a disagreement with Ken Robinson here. 1. The idea of singularity (as Ray Kurzweil puts it) and compare it to the telegraph is rather suspect considering how little we know about parallell processing in the brain and how you would compute ions spread across a phosphobilipid layer in binary code, unless you just try some statistical work - which doesnt tell us anything about the fundamental structure of consciousness. 2. The idea that you can predict technology development but not how it will intereact with culture, outa everything in this world of technology, that is probably the easiest to predict, since we're semisocial primates with certainly somewhat restricted social outputs. Okay, you give us internet, a primatologist would perhaps guess that a promiscious male would approach stimuli of female body parts, or use a two way communication to try to achieve a copulation or two. 3. Rofl @ mentioning the ridiculous sycophant Thomas Friedman. Except for that he got his heart on the right place concerning how broken the educational system is - but it is, for very good capitalist reasons.

you'll get older and will do nothing about it. You probably never helped 12 year old girls with their education, eventhough you would loved to be 12 and be educated by an 16 yo. Theirs no better alternative. So don't complain unless you have a better alternative. My advice would be start doing something stick with it. It will learn you a lot about discipline and when you find out what you love. You'll allready know about discipline.

I would be chocked if you've never complained about something without having a better alternativein your life, be it education or tomorows supper. so please stop dismiss the young generations and give them a chanse to voice their opinion in the mater after al the school is made for them so if it sucks they have the right to say we dont like it!

no, things change when people change them. People who said let's change it might have this feeling that they did something, but they didn't. Offcourse this doesn't count for riots and such. But I don't see you starting a riot. I'm trying to tell you that you love to complain about your education, but you hardly do any education outside of school. Nikola Tesla went to bed at 11pm and got up at 3 am everyday. He hardly made any mistakes during tests. He was quite obsessed with having a good edu.
