Sir, Duke - Tony Robinson & John Wayne: "Brannigan" (1975)

AKA Baldrick but a much earlier on-screen appearance in "Brannigan" - a Transatlantic cop-culture-clash vehicle for the latter in his penultimate film outing.

Tony Robinson was standing on the very same spot in his documentary about the Thames and he mentioned this scene.

I know it was 1975, but Robinson looks so young. This movie had an all star cast with Attenborough, Meeker, Geeson, Ferrer, Vernon, and many others.

I just stopped listening to Sir Tony’s audio book to find this scene. Brilliant.

I went to an evening with Tony Robinson. He said, I was treading water for hours and it was full of turds because the boats emptied their waste into the Thames. Reason he was in the water for so long was because John Wayne couldn’t remember his lines

@@jamesbyersmusic What? John Wayne was great! If he couldn’t remember his lines in this film it was probably because he was in his late 60s when he made this.

If you like him then wonderful! But I think he was awful. Yes he made a few films that are all time classics and there are a handful of his movies that I adore, but I really don't think he could act at all. He was very good at being "John Wayne", but that's about all he could do, much the same as Hugh Grant and Martin Freeman are only ever Hugh Grant and Martin Freeman.

@@jamesbyersmusic i thought the same about Hugh Grant until i watched, The Gentleman. He blew me away. You're spot on about John Wayne though. He did make some good films but he played himself in them all.

@@jamesbyersmusic Yes, I know what you’re saying. There are quite a few actors like that. Cary Grant always played Cary Grant, but when he was cast in the right movie it worked perfectly, like in ‘North by Northwest’. Same with Wayne. But he was very good at what he did. I’ve never been a fan of Hugh Grant, he’s just a bit wet!

This is the Royal Docks in east London, the Excel Centre and Billingsgate Fish Market stand on that quayside today, and the other side of the dock is where the City Airport now is.

Is this the same place Jarre did his docklands concert in 1988 ?

It is, I remember that concert occurring, there was a huge warehouse that lit up behind the floating pontoon where Jean Michelle Jarre’s stage was. Sadly it poured with rain but the laser and lighting effects weren’t diminished. I remember the show was postponed from its original date and then took place on a rescheduled day - this meant all the merchandise, the t-shirts and hats, sold at the concert had the wrong date on them. It was 1988 if my memory serves me correctly.

@@Ian-gw2vx Are you from that part of east London? I remember the news coverage at the time, they interviewed lots of locals, and they all said it was no imposition to them to have the concert and they said they enjoyed the music and the visuals too.
