Sir Alex Ferguson: “he could be our best ever player” | What happened to Phil Jones?

Спорт

After 12 years at the club, Phil Jones is officially leaving Manchester United today (June 30th, 2023). Phil Jones has had an interesting career at Man United to say the least. There has been a lot of Phil Jones own goals, there has been many different Phil Jones faces, and unfortunately, these are the things that most people will remember him for. However, Phil Jones has been a dedicated member of Manchester United, always giving his all on the training pitch or the pitch itself. Unfortunately for him, injuries have destroyed his career to the point where his future is unknown. What’s for sure, is that Phil Jones is leaving Manchester United.
Let’s look back at Phil Jones’ time at Blackburn, when Jones transferred to Man United in 2011, his highs and the lows of playing in the age of social media.

It's crazy how a player can go from being seen as a potential club ace at one point to years later being forgotten that he's still at the club.

It’s sad that to kids who never actually saw him he’s a meme like Maguire but early on he really was a great player. Brilliant defender who could even hold his own in CM/DM, injuries just ruined him. We can laugh at Fergies comments now but at the time many of us thought we had a Terry/Makelele hybrid 😂

Definitely one of if not the saddest story in football history. What a player he could have been and more importantly what a great guy he always was and still is, no matter what happened to him and his career. He NEVER gave up, he always gave everything to fulfill his dream. He wore our colors with so much pride and humility. If the rest of our players had half of his heart United never would have fallen so deep as we did since Sir Alex left. All true United supporters and good people in general should wish him all the best for his future, never dare to lose a bad word about him and always show him the respect he undoubtedly deservers. Thank you, Phil! You'll always be one of us

As a diehard United fan, although over the years I've been frustrated and boiling over his high-profile mistakes, honestly, I feel very bad on how our fanbase criticized him. He was a consummate professional on and off the pitch, never complained and was willing to run through brick walls under Fergie and LVG. It's a tragedy and an absolute shame that a 10+ year servant of the club who won a premier league and various other trophies will be remembered for his face more than his good performances.

It happens. 2 of my brothers friends joined the MLS at 16 (back in 2007-2008) 1 joined Chivas USA (forgot his name) and the other joined San Jose Earthquake (Isiahs). These 2 were monsters on the field together. One was a dribbling wizard (Isiahs) and the other was a strong CDM (Chivas USA player). By the time they were 20-21 they just couldn't get minutes or stay in form. Isiahs retired and moved to Colorado and started a family at a young age. The Chivas USA player went to go play in El Salvador. Really sucks. Some guys are just amazing in training, but crumble in a real game.

Worth noting that, when calling him up for England, Fabio Capello likened his natural ability and reading of the game to Franc Baresi. F'ing Baresi! So it wasn't just Fergie, or some parochial Little Englander thing - his quality at that age was widely recognised in the game.

I knew Jones as a kid, as his family lived on the same estate as me just outside Preston, and I also worked briefly with his girlfriend (now wife). Both were really nice kids, and Jones was incredibly humble despite his obvious talent. It's a shame his career didn't pan out the way he, and many others, expected, but he still achieved more in the game than 99% of his haters. I wish him all the best in the future.

There was a time I truly rated Phil Jones far higher than Chris Smalling. Not only he's a great defender on his day, he can also put in a quality display in midfield. I thought in Ferguson's final year he had the next defensive pairing to replace Vidic and Ferdinand in Jones and Smalling but that didn't work out at all. Jones was ruined by injuries and had some blunders in his game. Not as bad as Maguire but blunders and most people would remember him as a meme generator than a competent player before Maguire took his place. Since signing a new deal in 2019 he hardly played and since 2020 he only played five games till now. He will be What could have been player had injuries and constant ridicule not affected him. I wish he was at least technically skilled, because he was always one of the hardest workers in the game. But just not adequate for the highest level. Yeah. Sad that he never overcomed his setbacks. And i dont think even his thousands pound weekly wages ever ease his soul or that mental scare. It's the worst. If he is going to retire that's good too. Perhaps he will turns out a good coach. Who knows.

I think his best games came in central midfield - I thought he was a good man-marker. But when he played centre back, he was an utter clown because of how theatrical he was - only Eric Bailly was worse. For a stocky man, he could get barged off the ball easily. Ferguson didn't help him: shifting him around between right back, centre back and central midfield. He was a victim of Ferguson's disastrous transfer policy: buying younger players instead of Premier League proven.

This guy made near £50mil from utd and ate their free food and got free medical treatment and everything. I would say he had the best career. How many people in the world can say they did no job and got £50mil for it hahaha

And no Jones was never a good defender, one should look his laughable performance against newcastle united away in 11/12.
