SIONYX Aurora Color Night VISION Camera. DON'T BUY IT before watching

This review is more about why you shouldn't buy the Sionyx night vision camera as a budget night vision option. It is a cool camera with a lot of features. It is just not a good budget option for night vision. There is no such thing as good budget night vision.

Here's the deal with this camera. If you are on a budget and you live somewhere where there is a lot of light pollution, this camera works great. Not many people can afford the $2500 PVS 14's. I've owned a few of PV-14's and 18's. I also own the Sionyx Sport. In some many ways the PVS-14 Gen 3 is obviously better. Like If you're shooting firearms with it, helmet mounts, in the middle of nowhere in the woods with very little light. But, I break out the Sionyx when I'm in the city or in my suburban area. I don't have to worry about looking directly at a bunch of street lights, or house lights. For me I have found the Sionyx is a better choice for that application. And again, if you're poor and you just want away to see in the dark for SHTF, one really just can't be these cameras for $399. They're obviously not GEN 3 night vision, but they perform very very wel in suburban/city areasl. It's definitely better than nothing by far. And if you have an IR flashlight, you're good to go. Great budget night vision camera that actually works. If you're looking to film standard video or pictures, yeah, it does suck for that. If you get it get it just for night vision.

We had a lot of military grade night vision where I worked, and they were almost useless in cities at night. Streetlights, car lights, front porch lights, would just wash them out and essentially made them useless. Now, out in the woods, they were great. They Sionyx would have been much better for surveillance at night in a city.

I totally understand that I won't be satisfied with a $600 night vision goggles. But if I had $3000 laying around, hey, I wouldn't need to consider buying $600 nvgs. That's just the problem with not making a lot of money.

I’d say there’s far more advantages with digital night vision over analog…..as long as it’s being used within its capabilities. Like having color images, being able to record video and take still images, exposure to bright lights, no worries of blemished tubes, specs and data sheets, ridiculously expensive replacement parts, limited warranties, ITAR regulations, possibility of future regulations and outright bans for civilian use. I’ve used plenty of nods in theatre and in training and they’re really not as spectacular as weekend warriors make them out to be. Even in the $10-$20k category, they’re going to have drawbacks. Differentiating colors, light exposure and overall fragility being the main ones. Im willing to bet good money within 10 years digital will surpass analog, making your overpriced phosphorus NVG’s obsolete

One thing that I want to point out is that it is actually possible to get a 1:1 picture that will give you some depth perception. If you use the digital zoom (click three times right arrow) the image you see will be the same angular diameter as your other eye. Of course, this lowers your overall field of view considerably, but it does help lessen the feeling of distortion.

I agree even though I've never used any nv. I'm doing my research and its pretty confusing. So Do these sionyx auroras work? Most first reactions are either they work and are a low cost option or they totally bag on it cuz it cheap and doesn't work well under moon light. But at the same time there's no one running nv without an ir light so idk what all the fuss is about

You're not fos. I agree it's not intensifier tube good. However, black silicon does make it superior to any other type of civilian digital night vision that, imo, REQUIRES an illuminator. Like you said, you don't need one with the aurora when there's a little lum. If ppl are looking for NV capability for cheap sionyx is the way to go.

Even at 7fps, it's not much better than the naked eye. I see people comparing this to gen 2, but in terms of passive performance, this is even worse than $100 gen 1. I like to think of it as a really high-quality gen 0 device.

The tilted screen placement is solved with the dedicated helmet mounts made for the Sionyx, but it doesn't solve the main issue, and that is the delay in the screen image vs real life when moving. I'm surprised nobody has made a magnifier that clips into the viewfinder since it already has the mounting tabs for something to mount to it. All that being said, as a mounted low light camera set to display on a tablet on a boat ect, and not a night vision replacement, it really is a game changer.

Apparently whatever I looked through must have been a million dollars. But a hunting buddy is a police officer. And brought out his tiny little monocular. Not even half that size. No moon. Overcast. In the middle of nowhere. So no citylight. No IR light. And other than it being green and black. I could see plain as day. Both near and far. Like an infinity focus or something. Literally hardly any starlight. Not like what your saying at all, as far as needing half a moon to have that quality. And it was the same for dual tubes on the helmet of a helicopter pilot for an ambulance service. (Was an emt) and he let me see it. Maybe you haven't had the option to check them out.. But I assume 3 generation and expensive. Anyway. Just throwing in my 2 cents.

Curious if you think this may be a good option to have on a boat. I am looking for something to use on late returns on the boat. Lights aren’t great to use on the water and most say use just eye sight. We have done this and gotten by but would prefer a bit better vision at night. Came across this product but can’t seem to figure out if it would be good for this use case.

I haven’t used it on the water. I have done a lot with actual analog night vision around water though. So this is just my guess. If you’re only using it coming in and going out, and there is a lot of ambient lighting, it will probably work ok. Still nowhere near as good as traditional analog night vision. This will work good with a full moon or a lot of ambient lighting.

I've had used several night vision cameras for the night sky and SiOnix does it for me when compared to price. Just ordered a Sport for myself as all the night / exposure features are identical to the more expensive models apart from the Pro. I couldn't care less about incompatibility with guns.

I'm not sure, but you probably can't use an iPhone to the same degree with an IR illuminator. I've read that most digital cameras have IR and UV filters permanently mounted. But, perhaps some phones have more flexibility. I know some phones do show IR LEDs from remote controls (near or higher than 850nm and some people can see them as a dim flicker in a dark room and their eyes have adjusted, while other people can't see them at all)

With total respect I would like to point out a couple false statements again total respect I submit this comment. I think you are very knowledgeable of night vision and the tech just perhaps we’re not aware of the unique positioning and just how far along they really are. It works great on a rifle best option for a civilian to acquire night vision for a incredibly affordable price point again You seem very knowledgeable and I don’t want to step on any toes I just would like to correct a couple things that I am sure have detoured buyers from an amazing product that are incorrect first of all placement for this on a rifle is meant to be set in front of the scope (not typical in my experience) second of all it is actually designed to be put on a rifle no larger than a 556/223 it’s for a tactical rifle it is rated by the company for this in the specs you can read about it and the test results on their website also as for the military using it….. The US Army has selected SIONYX digital night vision cameras for its Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) project. The contract has been awarded under the SOSSEC and the Sensors, Communications and Electronics Consortium (SCEC) Other Transaction Agreement. Valued at $19.9m, the contract has been issued on behalf of the US Army’s Night Vision and Electronic Sensor Directorate (NVESD) for an undisclosed number of digital night vision cameras....

I appreciate the feedback. Looking back, I wish I would have done the review a little different. My intentions was to deter someone that was interested in analog night vision, and expected this was the same. Also at the time, I didn’t know the device was supposed to go in front of the optic. I failed to research enough prior to the review. I’m hoping to get ahold of a pro model and do another review eventually.

Or for ~$100 can get a single, $150 a dual bridge off eBay. Image is great down into low light w/o IR. Very low light review is correct, it looks just like his pic showed.
