Sinuous Asperoteuthis Mangoldae Squid Filmed Alive for First Time | Nautilus Live

Ғылым және технология

Hovering above the seafloor, the Asperoteuthis mangoldae squid is a recently discovered deep-sea species that was just seen alive for the first time! Researchers think this unusual squid's tail may help it mimic other animals, like a stinging siphonophore. For NOAA scientist Dr. Michael Vecchione who identified the squid, the next question about this little-known cephalopod is why changing its appearance would be important for survival in the almost lightless deep sea. The Nautilus team spotted this sinuous squid at 930m near Jarvis Seamount in the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. Learn more about this squid: nautl.us/2MhSZKK

I think I remember something about how many animals in the deep sea have no visual receptors for red, because water filters the red out of the sunlight anyway, so many animals use red as a way of camouflage. Ironic, considering the way animals on, and closer to, the surface, use it. I might be wrong, though.

Because giant Kraken wouldn't be able to find enough food to sustain itself. Sure, great size lets you catch bigger prey. But when you grow too much, there is not enough big prey close enough you can catch without spending more energy than you can get. That's why whales switched from quality to quantity and started eating plankton in bulk.

It is so much fun to get to see so many deep sea weirdos scooting around and how they react to the presence of the vehicle checking them out. I seem to remember a recent post about the fish on the sea floor resembling a large pollywog. Since I don't know what else to call the wobbly fish, pollywog will have to do.

This is a stage in the squids growth where it mimics sophonophores in the water column cuz predators dnt really bother with them as they are not a really a worthwhile food source. Also they might think it can sting like other species of sophonophores .

It totally looked like the seaweedthat washes up here in the west coast/central coat California. Same color sableshallow and everything. The back of it liked just like the leaf and his body looked like this little jalapeno looking thing that the leaf grows off of. Is crazy how much it looked like it
