“Sintel” is an independently produced short movie, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. With initial funding provided by 1000s of donations via the internet community, it has again proven to be a viable development model for both open 3D technology as for independent animation film.
This 15 minute animated movie has been realized in the studio of the Amsterdam Blender Institute, by an international team of artists and developers. In addition to that, several crucial technical and creative targets have been realized online, by developers and artists and teams all over the world.
“Sintel” commenced in May 2009, with producer Ton Roosendaal establishing a core team consisting of Colin Levy (director), David Revoy (concept art), Martin Lodewijk (story) and Jan Morgenstern (composer). In August script writer Esther Wouda was approached as a consultant, which resulted in her taking the responsibility for the entire screenplay. Esther then worked in close cooperation with Colin, David and Ton to deliver the final script early November. Meanwhile, Colin and David realized the first storyboards.
Based on a public call for artists - with over 150 respondents - the Durian artist team got established in July 2009. They first met in a pre-production week in Amsterdam in August, and all decided to join the project per October 1st. With the final movie budget still unknown, the target then still was to finish the film within 7 months, with a team of 6 artists and 2 developers. At that time the team still had the hopes to be able to realize the script in a 6-8 minute film.
In november, the Netherlands Film Fund approved on a substantial subsidy for Sintel, enough to extend the project to 10 months, with possible 1 or 2 extra artist seats in the final months. It was also by this time that breakdowns and animatic edits showed that the script had to be revised to become more compact, with a story structure using a flashback.
In the months after, Colin’s work on the Director’s Layout - 3D animatic shots - and final designs on the grand finale gradually made the movie longer, from 9 minutes in november, to almost 12 in May. Proper story telling, to absorb an audience with convincing characters and action just takes time!
With the highly anticipated extra funding from the Amsterdam Cinegrid - also funding a 4k resolution version - Ton finally could extend the team with 5 artists and a developer in March 2010. With 14 people the film then was completed for a first screening on July 18th in cinema Studio K in Amsterdam.
Three artists then stayed in Amsterdam working on final shot edits, lighting design, compositing, and on the impressive 2 minute film credits. The movie ended up with a total duration of 14m:48s, 888 seconds!

This is amazing. Sintel's pursuit of happiness, begins when she thinks she owns it... Something (in this case the mother) takes it away from her, and here starts the journey of a trubled life, searching for it. Once she faced it, she didn't recognise it... So she spent her life being not happy, pursuing it. She killed her own happiness in this way. Anway, life gives you other reasons and choices to be happy (the baby dragon at the end), but having traumas from your past, you don't even turn your head and look for happiness arownd the corner. This is a great lifelesson movie.

I was a little confused on how scales could have gotten that much bigger in only a few days until I realized that she finally realized how much time had actually passed. When you take that into consideration, it all makes sense.. Maybe the baby dragon was scales' baby and he tried to protect it leading to their fight, they both realized it too late..

If I was Sintel, I would've stayed in the cave, waiting to die. As i do not know how to live life anymore. To think of it, you found something so precious to you, you cherished it, and took tender care of it. Yet, one day its gone,and when you tried your very best to get it back, you unintentionally ended up killing it, making things irreversibly worst. Life is just too cruel!
I'm still thinking why she's mad at the mother of the baby for taking it back

A beautiful parable on the nature of clinging onto loss for too long otherwise, we lose ourselves.
It was impactful to realize how much time has really passed. Must must have traveled for years, but was there a deeper meaning? She didn't notice how much she aged and therefore the possible age of Scales. What is the meaning of that?

I personally feel the ending could be like, scales protecting sintel under its wings when the cave collapsed and focussing on sintel's teary eyes when she leaves her stuff behind. great content for 12 min :)

what an amazing short and fantastic example of what can be accomplished in Blender! the story, camera tracking, lighting, soundtrack, everything were so well executed I was amazed! just shows what can be accomplished using free open source software combined with real creative talent!

Dragons are usually selfbreedable, but yes, it was Scales parent dragon. Scales didnt recognize her nor she did recognize him since it has passed very long time on her journey of searching for Scales....when they both have realize who they are to each other, it was already to late. Mirroring in his blood she saw herself and realized how she grew old meanwhile as on her journey she didnt even notice nor had a sense for time that passed. Its a sad end, but still leaves some hope, since the little dragon survived as we saw, what means theres a good chance to make it up and make her journey worth the time she spent on. Like, to save whats left to be saved, at least.
Too sad. It's like to kill your own child and to have another one to find consolation. I can't stop thinking about this story. I wish I had never watched it. It's too disturbing.
Very interesting movie! The only thing that I don't really get is Sintel's plan. She was basically planning to keep going forward until she bumps into the dragon?
