It doesn't recognize it in a moral sense but does recognize that it was set up and that that has meant a legacy that they have to operate under. An Irish nationalist party that doesn't even recognize Northern Ireland's existence is in the position to nominate a first minister ... I had to go back and hear this several times. I remember writing a termpaper in university (about the historic roots of the NI conflict) that finished with the outlook that the Irish island could unite once the majority of Northern Ireland's population was in favor of that. (I'm from Germany and studied English.) It seemed a far off possibility then, though probably in my lifetime. Now I see steps leading toward that and it feels ... overwhelming. I've never actually been to NI! I want to be able to say I've been there before it stops existing! I want to see the murals and the crazy parades and talk to the people "on the street". I want to see how NI is more than what I hear on the news. Do I need to book a flight?! No, sorry, of course not. But it really seems so historic and fast and strange - though I am highly in favour of it! And I don't mean that I want the Unionists to feel like even more of a minority than they already do (which I suspect will happen once the island is united); rather I see this as a danger to be addressed. But the separation of the island was - in my opinion and of course I think that it's the truth - forced, unnatural and arbitrary, and thus the unification seems like the most natural thing to me. (Did I mention I am from East Germany and love that we are a united country now? 😉) In any case: Donna nobis pacem - and unity!

There's no doubt now that a majority of people in Northern Ireland support the Protocol (or at the very least, oppose the establishment of a customs border on the island of Ireland, which is the only real alternative to an Irish Sea customs border). As for the border poll question - I don't think Sinn Fein will see any reason to rush it. The demographic trends in Northern Ireland point in only one direction. The lower birth rates and higher emigration rates of Protestant/Loyalist communities have essentially baked them in for the next fifty years. The Unionist supermajority which NI was built on has now eroded completely. There's not even a bare plurality left. Speaking as an Australian - it's hard to see what practical benefits remaining part of the UK would provide Northern Ireland. Whatever those benefits are, I don't see them becoming more compelling in the next twenty years. If the Unionists were smart, they'd push for a quick border poll (which they would probably win if it were held in the next five years) - and then use that as a stick to delay the inevitable. However, nothing about Unionist politics in the last decade has been intelligent. I only hope that the transition, however long it takes, is as peaceful as it can be.

@@jebgue3 I'm not an expert on valuing intergovernmental transfers in the UK. What I will say though is I don't think Northern Ireland would immediately transform into the economic equivalent of Bulgaria if it left the UK. That's what a 65% figure annual subsidy figure would imply and it doesn't sound realistic. As a matter of fact, it sounds so unrealistic that it strains credibility. But there is a broader point to be made here. If Northern Ireland has become such an enormous mendicant province, what the hell does that say about the quality of governance that they have been receiving from the UK over the past century? Not every regional wealth disparity is a policy failure - but one that large left to fester for so long can't be explained as anything but a staggering failure of national leadership. It would almost imply that the national government is deliberately neglecting that part of their country and leaving it to rot.

I'm voting against unification in any future vote....I dont want Michelle O Neill or her ilk in the South......not everyone supports Sinn Finn....they have 25 seats in an assembly of 90 seats...they do not have a monopoly thank God....swapping the NHS for our botched HSE system....cutting off important economic ties with the UK.....not being strangled by EU bureaucracy......I think huge numbers of nationalists will vote unification down.....and keep the status quo....

The SNP controls Scotland, Sinn Fein controls Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom as we know it won't be around much longer. Only the tories could have brought this to fruition. What incompetence.

Can't blame the Tories entirely. I think much of the rest of the UK has become increasingly horrified by the bigotry and small-mindedness of the average Anglo-Saxon which will inevitably reduce England to a Ruritanian rump of a country. Irrelevant and impotent.

Equality for all… that’s all we ask. Let the people decide on reunification and if that goes ahead. Firstly, let’s build a stronger, more inclusive Ireland. Then let’s work to build a strong and meaningful relationship with our friends in the Uk and help put this part on the world back on the map!

Isn't it possible that some nationalism ,is just darker than others? For e.g ,if a right winger watches the BBC, and see's loads of reports about far right groups ,I'm guessing he'll think that the BBC is left wing ,instead of considering the possibility that there just isn't as many far left groups ,or what they do isn't a newsworthy.

Because Celtic nationalism isn't rooted in white supremacy and eugenics. It's is born from the perspective of therighteous oppressed, not the bitter opressor...Germanic nationalism by comparison (3rd reich, anglo-Saxon, Frankish), is very much the opressor asserting the supremacy of their race over all others. It's all about the perspective.

Well, makes for interesting times.. Better the ballot than the bomb and 101 years is not much in the great scheme of things. Sin Fein now has the opportunity to show how well they can govern for all of the people and, should they manage to have a referendum, then to accept it, at least for a generation, if they lose rather than a 'Neverendum' like Sturgeon in Scotland.
