This is the most useful serve & volley video I've seen. Most videos like this focus on HOW to hit the serve and the volley, but not WHERE and WHY. Excellent tips!

Thanks Ian. My normal go-to serve on the ad side is wide, usually to pick out the opponent's weaker side which is normally the backhand. But you've given me a good geometrical understanding of how to play the percentages and Im looking forward to hitting the court and trying it out.

Last time I played a set, I decided to serve and volley on almost all of my serves. Despite limited net experience and some serve consistency issues (it is improving), I managed to play very decently, in very large part because of those tips. Koodos to my opponent who had a good serve and a solid forehand for pulling it off, but it really worked better than it ever did before. I never thought S&V could be so solid today and, as importantly, so fun to play. If my serve and volleys improve a hit, it definitely will put lots of my usual partners in trouble. If a special request is possible, given how few tips are available online regarding serve and volley or just net play in general if you compare to hitting ground strokes, I'd like to see more instructional videos from you on the subject.

Here's an article that will give you a great tip that I use: switch your grips forehand and backhand (as you would when hitting overheads): www.tennisserver.com/turbo/turbo_17_10.shtml

Ian, my only addition to your tactics would be for a right-handed player playing a right-handed player, the out wide on the ad side can be very effective: 1 most club players are weaker on the backhand side and tend to hit the ball back to your forehand volley and 2 if your back hand volley is a bit weaker you will have a whole deuce court to hit into. I like to serve and volleying on the Ad court when I serve out wide. What do you think of this? It does not work the same on the Deuce side, probably because it plays to their strength and back to my weaker side.

That absolutely CAN be effective, Dana! Especially vs an opponent who hates his or her backhand. My goal with this video was to point out the geometrical constants: going out wide gives your opponent more options to hit around you. If your opponent's backhand is so weak that they can't take advantage of the extra angles at all then by all means abuse the heck out of it! Thanks for watching :-)

I m a baseliner and lately had been advised by a mentor to come to the net more and have seen surprising results just need to know your thoughts on when to come to the net in rallies and where to start/aim volleying - I am a lefty ( ambidextrous)

On deuce side, my weapon is the big flat serve wide to the corner, skidding the lines. This draws my opponent off the court, usually off balance, which results in a weaker return in a narrow coverage zone. Coming in for the volley, I have less court angle to cover, and wide open opponent court for the put away. If you do not have a big, flat first, the same tactic will work on deuce with shallower, sliced out wide spinners, or kickers. On add side, flat to the corner on backhand has much the same effect. I save body and T serves mostly for the second, though will occasionally mix it up to keep my opponent guessing. With a big first to both corners, the T is opened up, especially on add side, as people try to protect their backhands, and even do run arounds to hit forehands. Occasionally, someone will swing late and get a lucky shot down the line, the Jesus shot, which is random reflex and about a 5% threat. Keeping my opponent on defense, having to cover the potential wide out serves, makes him anxious, especially if I come in behind with the volleys constantly. Knock him off balance, take his time away and watch the calm composure turn to anxious uncertainty.

I try to do exactly as you mentioned above and found it to be working well. That was so well put btw. Sometimes, I intentionally serve an easy one on the Ad T side at 40-0 and let a winner go by down the line just to make them believe that they can hit winners on return of serve, drives up the unforced errors on their side without them realising.

do you mean, when I serve,I should mix all kind of serve and course? and it will be better adding spin because It will give me more time to approach net?

I always thought serving out wide was a key component of S&V, and also helped to mix up your serves so they're not predictable.

It can be.....if your opponent has a big weakness out wide. If they don't, however, then body and T are definitely going to make your job easier in the long run!

Absolutely, the body and the T should still be your bread and butter targets on both the deuce and ad side. Always pay attention to every opponent's strengths and weaknesses, however!

Then either they are playing a risky shot and you will get a smash opportunity or they will hit out often enough for you to be happy. Or the other possibility is your first volley wasn't quite good enough, possibly bouncing too high.

I would have to disagree. The serve and volley technique is to be very aggressive strategy, not a "play it safe" like playing baseline. Look at Patrick Rafter probably the greatest serve and volleyer of all time but also Pete Sampras as well. Now Pete was not a serve and volleyer like Rafter but I would consider him a All Court Player. When he played against Agassi in 2002 he was constantly at the net and also not hitting the ball back at Agassi but hitting those angels. Rafter was the same way , why give your opponent the ball? Make them work for it. Yes you might have to move a little further but not nearly as much as your opponent would have to.You maintain control of not just the point but the match you are forcing your to react alot faster then if you played the baseline. I don't believe that as a serve and volleyer that you should only focus on two spots out of the three when serving, be dynamic and adapt to your opponent's technique. Press the net put them on their heels and force those errors and capitalize on those mistakes.
