Single Turbo Vs Upgraded Twins - 4 Major Things To Consider Before Upgrading (335i N54)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Upgraded twin turbos or a big single turbo? Which is best? This is one of the most common questions I get asked since I've been fortunate enough to own both setups in two different 335i's. The question is not that easy to answer since there are a lot of factors that play into each setup. But what I can do, is share my personal experience in hopes of helping you decide what upgrade works best for you and your car.

I think CES solution is the best of both world. It’s bottom mount so it keeps the heat away from the top of the motor and exhaust pulses are splits up from the exhaust manifold to the turbo so that means the turbo will spool closer/closest to the stock turbos compared to any single turbo kit.

I get that there rare varying experiences with the Vargas kits, but here's mine. In 2018 I flew from Miami to Denver sight unseen to pick up a very conservatively tuned manual transmission 2010 535i Touring with Vargas Stage 1s already installed and drove it home. I've completed the modifications you'd expect with these turbos and have dyno'd 489 whp and GPS'd 177mph on alligator alley. This is looks like a soccer-mom car and is my daily for work, but the Vargas Stage 1s now have 54k miles on them with no issue. I'm torn on what to do when these turbos do expire, as I'd like another 50-100+ hp, but don't want to start tearing through the original xDrive components if I don't have to.

I can remove all my parts like intake and DP but I’m not about to swap back the turbos each time for smog. I live in CA so it’s crazy out here. You have to uninstall the tuning software which is easy enough to do. And you should be good. I just went through it not too long ago. And ppl on the forum say that u can pass with upgraded turbos so long as you use the stock tune for the time being. But apparently if you go single turbo then can’t smog it in CA. Obviously power delivery between the two will be very very different, twins hitting hard down low quickly whereas you gotta wait a while for a large single to spool, but those PS2s should hold to redline no problem, so what does the single, that one in particular, have over the twins?

I ordered 17t's from Dynamic Autowerx and they made crazy power however the rear turbo blew up within 1000 miles. They ended up replacing it for me. Lasted at 22-26psi for 5k miles until I blew my motor. Gonna put them on my new motor. The set I bought costed about $1900 after shipping. I ordered the turbo replacement kit from ECS Tunjng for about $250 at the time. Assuming you do the install yourself and have the tools already, you'll be able to spend about $2400 to upgrade twins and they come with a warranty. If I could go back, I would go with a single turbo considering my car is a 6AT and I could make 650-700whp "safely" without risking the trans. The twins produce a lot of torque, which can snap axels and blow transmissions super easily. Single turbo is pretty in the engine bay, a lot easier to replace if something were to go wrong, technically safer, and in most cases capable of making more power.

The worse thing about e9x cars is you always see what they run on the dyno but you never see what they do against another car on the highway or on the drag strip. Every video is just how much it makes on the dyno.

Multiple reasons for it. Heavy car so it's good on the roll but not so good on the dig. Hense you will find roll races with it but hard to find a drag race. It's a bmw. Fun to drive and can be very powerful, but running it hard means unintended maintenance and if you aren't doing it yourself you could be spending more than you paid for the car to get it running again. Lastly it's a bmw most people will build it for show or drift.

This is why I love the YouTubbers. They do crazy shit to their engines so we don't have to. I own a BMW M car and no way will I do tunes or add bolt-ons. That just hurts the future value of these special models and you protect your wallet along the way. I understand the dynamics of YouTubbing, having to generate content and lining up sponsorship deals and such. You guys work hard but at the end of the day, it's strictly entertainment.

No reason for this to be 3k. It’s not that difficult. Doing my wife’s in my shop along with all new hoses, ps system, ac system, gaskets and it’s close to 3k then labor wise if I factored it all plus washing the bay and deep cleaning it. If it were just down to the turbo business, 1.5ish. That’s 15 hours of labor. Plus it’ll be on carfax. Shops aren’t fare, charging full for stuff already coming out
