Single transistor self-oscillating circuitry with NPN or PNP transistors ( Joule thief )

In this video I show you the basic schematic of a single transistor self oscillating circuitry. Among the hobbyist this is known as Joule thief circuitry. I show you how to make it with NPN or with PNP transistors. Impact of transistor type, base resistance and input voltage on the output waveform is shown. In a future video I will make a two transistor circuit and will compare the efficiency of that with a single transistor circuitry. Also a Matlab Simulink model of such circuitry will be built in the future.
The fact that the circuit start by itself is interesting and makes this simple circuit very useful for DC/DC low power converters.

    Professor, really thorough explanation. This time I know how the phase point of the feedback winding influence the output. I have a small suggestion, if there could be a bit explanation on PNP transistor that would be much perfect since the real circuit you made is based on PNP :). The model that I made in LTSpice still bring some strange results and I am really curious on your results in Simulink. When you come back, I really want to make one myself in the lab if you can provide some help, that would be great.

    Hi Weichuan, sure you can make one it is too simple. I made with PNP because on internet mostly is available for NPN, I wanted to cover what is less available.

    Joule thief aka blocking oscillator has two windings, they are not primary and secondary, the smaller winding is sensing coil to sense the rate of change of current so that it can turn the transistor on and off, if you keep lesser turns on sensing coil, let's say 2 turns only, and increase the turns on longer coil to such an extent that current draw from battery becomes lowest possible due to back emf of larger coil, and keep the largest coil isolated, then connect a zener diode between the two terminals of small sensing coil so that the increase in current in smaller coil (due to flow of current in larger coil) won't increase current draw from battery, and then connect the two terminals of output coil to a step up transformer, you can possibly make an overunity device
