The simple fact that you said you'll be adopting the swing moving forward is all the credibility it needs. Kudos to you Chad and welcome to the SPS family. Just make you stay down on that trail foot longer for straighter and more consistent shots.

Thanks for sharing your journey on SPS with us. I’m a tinkerer thus my swing changes quite a bit since I started playing golf. To the point, since adopting SPS I lowered my HC by 6 strokes. Mainly, like you experienced, the shot dispersion is way more tight. Keep the trail foot down after impact and you will notice more accuracy. Very best to you in 2022!

After 2 years, almost 200 rounds played (in a 6 month golf season...) and lots of practice both at the range, into a net and just practicing the swing, I am "happy" with my SPS. It feels like "my" swing. When I address the ball, it feels like the right way, for me, to approach the shot. When I video my swings, both DTL and FO look like I want them to. I did it to ease (nay, eliminate) my back pain, which it did miraculously, but my consistency and accuracy compared to my previous, painful, conventional swing, is nothing but better all around. Keep up your good work, watch the body position at address, as the hips are "behind" the ankles which affects body rotation. Get them over the ankles and it will help avoid those pushes. May we all have a better New Year, we deserve and need it.

Thanks for sticking with it to do a thorough and unbiased review. I tend to agree with you that there really has to be some variation in certain single plane swing parameters… for example, stance width and distance from ball should naturally vary somewhat based on a persons height (maybe some % scale factor at least).. it seems wrong to try and impose specific dimensions at setup for people of all sizes.

So rewatched all the videos in the series and I’m really impressed. Your swing looks great! I feel like we’re alike in that we’re both athletic and can make almost any swing work but to me you look the best here and who can deny the results? I also feel you took the right approach in finding your own Moe swing. I was initially turned off to SPS by Todd Graves when I realized I would have to get new clubs or get my current clubs really changed. I felt once I started down the path I couldn’t easily turn back . The way you did it works for me as new clubs are not in the budget right now. Good stuff. Really enjoyed it. Going to the range to try it.

Thank you sir! So glad that you watched them all so the context makes sense. After all of it and trying different things, I'm fully of the opinion that even though there are specific methods out there, you don't have to fit in to a box. As long as you start on the single plane and finish on the single plane at impact, it IS a single plane swing. You can make it your own.

  • @kevinhelton734

A Happy New Year to you as well! Congrats on the progress with the single plane swing. Having 4 consistent founds below 80 and cutting the handicap in half is awesome. I never lost distance myself. That usually occurs when people over do the straight line on one hand or the other. That removes the natural leverage found in the wrists. Losing the leverage = losing the distance. As ofr the blocks check your triangles they should form a straight line essentially that is parallel to the target line. If that line crosses the target line in the backswing you will likely finish the through swing across the line as well. Also check ball position. If its a little too far back it will influence the crossing the target line. The beauty of the swing is the ease with which problems can be fixed and the consistency it allows. It seems you're finding both. It's definitely made the game more fun for me. I hope it is for you. Also lets you challenge the course instead of it being a challenge to you. Again congrats on the progess and achievements. Keep hitting them straight in the new year!

I am 60 years old, 5 foot six tall and in reasonable shape. I switched to the single plane swing in mid 2020. At that time i was playing off a handicap of 11 - 12. By the end of 2020 I was playing off single figures for the first time in my 40 years playing golf. Got it as low as 8 but mostly playing off 9 occasionally 10. I have continued to work on it and by the middle of 2021 I was regularily playing off 7 even getting down to 5 for a round or two. To get lower I need to improve my putting and short game in general but i am living proof that the single plane swing can improve your game greatly. I hit it further , higher and straighter than I ever have. Its a revelation. I have enjoyed watching your videos and hope you stick with the single plane swing. By the way i still hit that straight block out to the right occasionally. For me its caused by the ball creeping back towards the centre of my stance at address. Club face has not yet squared up. Cheers from the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia. !!!!

Great series, Chad! I don’t recall if you mentioned it or not, but if you did it bares repeating, the SPS is much easier on the back. With my traditional swing I operated at a 1:2 ratio: one day of golf to two days of back pain. With SPS that is no longer is the case. I’ve been on two golf vacations in the last six months where I played 36 holes of golf/day for three straight days and had ZERO back pain. There was no way in the world I could’ve done that with my traditional swing. And, at 58 years old, my handicap is down to where it was when I was in my late 20s. If people are not able to play as much golf as they like due to back pain, I would strongly suggest they give the single plane swing a try.

You have certainly given it your all that is for sure. I am not sure where you were from a handicap perspective before the change, but I did like the swing you have previously if I am being honest. You have a slight Jim Furyk/Matt Wolff move in your downswing that is still there and is what I think has allowed you to maintain your distance. I would love to see some swings in slow motion - possibly from the old to now to really see what has changed aside from the straightening of your arms at address. For me, that is about all I have taken from the SPS since it seems to help me make better contact. So I am building a custom swing around that using Kirk Junge's teachings and some of Shawn Clement's drills. I don't know if you experience it, but after swinging one way for so long, trying to change is really difficult. So many swing thoughts going through your head at any given time, which can result in a lot of confusion, discouragement and some very bad days. It's really a three steps forward two steps back process - for me anyway. And I am guessing it is what causes some of your angst with the swing even though the scores are good. Just some observations from a fan of your work. Been watching your journey and have tremendous respect for what you tried or have done depending on where decide to go in the future. Have a happy and safe New Year brother.

Thank you for your latest journey, I have over the years been a KZread searcher for the Holy Grail of golf swings. I play off a handicap of seven, but what I think holds me back, is the trying of new swing methods. I just love trying them, but I cannot stick with one, because I see new ideas every month or so , and give it a try. Single Plane, Stack & Tilt, Right Sided, Rotary Swing, Jim Venetos, Gravity Golf, Wisdom in Golf ect ect. It would be great to include a little of each to become a great golfer, but thats the Holy Grail. Would it be possible to do a survey from your subscribers and ask, How to become a great Putter, with the mental side as well included.See the feedback and go with the majority, and give it a go. I think the majority of golfers would be average three or four less handicap, if they had a fantastic pre shot mental routine, with a good stable technique. Love your feedback. From the UK

I adopted the SPS 2 years ago and I wont' go back, it's the real deal, an easier way to play the game... I noticed that on all shots you showed us, you are always over the top and it comes from your take away. You pull the club inside early in the backswing, then at the top you have nowhere to go but over the top. Try to start the backswing with the left shoulder only, don't pull the club back. This way, the club will be on the proper plane and there will be no more over the top move in the transition. This will produce straighter shots. All the best to you !

I noticed a slight difference from what I saw in your swing prior to this video. Before, you appeared better braced against the back leg and smoother. The main thing I saw today was this little tick hitch move forward right before your takeaway. This seemed to fracture the single plane ever so slightly before going back which seemed not as connected as before. That little forward tick is your first move instead of your normal takeaway with the plane pre set. Hope that makes sense, but you’re still striking outstanding and have helped my game significantly with your on target assessments and excellent communication I can understand. Thanks!

There is no silver bullet or magic pill. At the end of the day, we all have to execute. To err is human and we will err. Even Moe never attained the pinnacle as Woods or Nicholas. What you are doing is a great service to us in giving light to these separate methods. Its up to us to pick a lane. You keep telling us that, but we don't seem to listen. That being said, I'm a SPS myself and can play a round and still come home and mow/weedeat the damn yard without taking an ice bath.😆 I'm 53 years old and things don't move as good as they used to. Or rebound. Thank you and I do look forward to what you bring to us next.

Congrats on the scoring and overall improvement. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy and all the best for the new year to you and yours. I much appreciate your candor and openness in every respect with regard to your golf journey. What I thought about the swing in this recent video is that you were being hampered by your old friend; the takeaway. If you look for example at 4:27, you are somewhat early bowing and hooding your lead wrist (club quite closed) and the trail arm is still straight (not folding right from the start) when the club is parallel to the toe line. If you compare Todd's position in this video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/eIt6usukkr2dddY.html at 2:39 and 3:13 is a closeup of the same position) when the club shaft is even with the toe line to yours at 4:27 when your shaft is at the toe line, you can see virtually all of the differences that cause the across the line move and most likely certain inconsistencies. Notice his lead wrist is not hooded and is fairly straight, the toe of the club is less closed, the trail arm is much more bent and the trail elbow is tracking more with the trail side or his torso as it moves back (yours is still way forward). Significantly the club arm unit is also significantly higher as the shaft is crossing above his knee (because it is travelling more up the plane line). From your hooded wrist position with straightish trail arm and low club position, the club is definitely going to work upward from there and ultimately cross the line. You are still doing a lot of things very well but I would say that if you get your takeaway ironed out you will make big strides forward toward perfecting your technique and improving (even further) your results. I also think that your hips are a little over active for a SPS but I think that is partially, at least, caused by the takeaway issue. So the pattern is that you are significantly (much more than Todd who is a little low like Moe) below the plane line and hooded on the way back and the over the plane line significantly with a cupped (open) lead wrist in the first half of the downswing and then you manage to have it quite on plane from shaft parallel down to the ball (at the cost of losing your spine angle a bit, I believe). I think that some of these things have been at least partially fixed in earlier videos but of course, the golf course always puts more stress on our games and old habits return more easily. I think that some kind of feedback that helps you determine how accurate your takeaway pattern is would be helpful. For example, swinging with a coat hanger along the grip will let you look down and see if the top of the hanger is moving with the pattern that you know is correct (having determined it beforehand). If you use a brightly colored one, you can easily spot if the pattern of movement is right or not. Or perhaps having a plane line drawn somewhere such that you can trace the line with the clubhead on the way back and verify the open/closed status as well. As I have mentioned, I believe that the takeway is one of THE keys to a great golf swing and it pretty much pre-determines the swing with rare exception. I hope that this is helpful as that is its intention. Cheers.

Oh and by the way, you're also the test administrator! So you've been doing great. I think you had some paralysis by analysis on the course. The better test is to do 5 rounds(if you can do more that would be better) and then based on that data you can better gauge where you are as one round is too small of a sample size. Look forward to your videos in the New Year! PS could you do a video next year on the Lag Shot or G force club? I was wondering if using the tool and following the videos/drills where your game could improve. There has been some good vids, like Mr Shortgame, but no long term reviews. Well I tried it earlier this year and the first thing I noticed was the sound of the impact, it was that "click" the pure hit in the sweetspot, I havent experienced that before. So two rounds ago, I Just went back to wide stance, high hands and that static kinda swing and the sound came back, click, took the ball almost clean, and I felt that I could handle the clubhead much better with higher precision. I dont know about that flexed leadleg post impact though, it feels awkvard. Guess I need some more training.

The only thing that is holding you back at this time is your mental game. You clearly have the game to post a score of par or better. You have to remember it's still golf and not every round is going to go as you hope. PGA Tour players have bad rounds all the time and they are best in the world. I believe you need to stop going out with a score in mind and only concern yourself with making a quality swing on your next shot. To many variables in this game that you cannot control. If you change your mindset, I would expect you to post multiple scores in 2022 of par or better.

It's a great question and the truth is, I was actually planning on that just before Shawn Clement reached out. Once I started that one, it went on for a few months and I just lost the plan. One issue I was trying to reconcile was which version of Channel Lock to try. The original with open foot line? The Tennesee Triangle? I feel like the open foot line and back ball position, the original, was the best version. When you set up the triangle, you drop the trail foot back, and you're essentially square again aren't you? In any event, I was going to go through both and address all of that, but got sidetracked with Shawn. That said, 2022 isn't written yet, and Channel Lock may very well get done.

Looks like you followed Todd Graves? I naturally had a single plane swing and had decent ball striking, but when I looked to correct a few things, I started watching Todd and for me my ball striking went down hill badly. I couldn’t get his method to work for me, I then moved on to Kirk Junge because his swing looked exactly like my old swing. Now I’m not saying anything negative about Todd, just saying his strict adherence to be like Moe in every way just didn’t fit me. Moe himself said make it your own. So the incoherent babbling I’m making leads to…. There is more than one way to achieve a single plain swing. Bryson Dechambeau’s single plain swing isn’t exactly Moe Normans single plane swing, far from it.
