There is so much wrong with this video, please anyone watching this don’t let your decision be guided by this lady. Just to begin with few, unless you are an ISP, you dont need single mode. Multimode effective distance is more than enough for home or business use, multimode allows multiple wavelengths of light, allowing for data and voip at the same time. The cost of the cable might be cheap, transceivers - that’s where they get you. Multimode tx are made using led light, which is cheaper, while singlemode are fricking LASERS! Speed again depends on the transceiver, there are MM SFP+ tx that achieve 100Gigabit speeds no problem.

What we saw is the cost between single mode solution and multi-mode solution is quit simliar today especially while the speed is 10Gbps or less. The reason is the FTTH (Fiber to The Home) is very common globally. The mass production cut cost down. Generally, the MM is limited to 550 meters, and you don't need to concern the distance issue with SM, it can achieve 80KM. The transceiver determine single mode or MM mode. Basically, you don't need to consider how the light generates (laser or LEDs), and what wavelenght is being used. After the SFP trasnceiver is picked, the rest is being determined. However, you are still seeing MM in the data center because of the short distance, cost.
