Fiber optic cable: Multimode vs Single-mode

Today my topic is fiber-optic cable. Specifically, I will talk about the structure of fiber cable, single mode fiber, multimode fiber, and their major differences. I will also compare the fiber-optic with twisted pair in terms of benefits and drawbacks.

    So mode just means a different path right and has nothing to do with wavelength? So for example if I have a single mode fiber and have rays of different wavelengths all traveling along a straight path down the fiber. Because the only path is a straight line and even though there’s multiple wavelengths of light, we still just have one mode correct? Now if I have rays of different wavelengths or all of the same wavelength but are traveling along the fiber at different paths I have multiple modes. It’s the different paths which makes this a multi mode case not the the fact that there rays of different wavelengths right?

    I have to say in practice basically no one uses Multimode anymore. Singlemode has become pretty cheap and with WDM you can transfer a lot of channels over the same fiber at speeds of up to 100Gbit/s. So even if you've got a 100m run between two buildings I'm still using singlemode cable.

  • @catfishrob1

    @catfishrob1

    Жыл бұрын

    I would say that's largely true, however, the LR xcvrs are still multiple times more expensive than SRs, and that can easily add up over hundreds of connections. Not only that, but if you use LRs at very short distances, because of the higher power, the xcvrs can burn each other out. In other words, they have to be replaced more often. Sometimes for simplicity (not having to stock MMF equipment) companies will elect to go pure SMF (or close to it), but this is not without its (primarily financial) drawbacks.

    Hello i have a question about symmetric key , i saw your video and u said we use private key but i found in other videos that we use public key , is that right or no ?

  • @sunnyclassroom24

    @sunnyclassroom24

    4 жыл бұрын

    A symmetric key is a private key in private encryption. The public key encryption uses Public key and private, but public key and private key are inseparable twins.

  • @Arganoid

    @Arganoid

    4 жыл бұрын

    When you connect to a secure website, public key (asymmetric) encryption is used to initiate the connection. This encryption is used to send a private key. Then symmetric encryption can be used from that point onwards.

    Everything else was very well laid out, but _why_ would multimode be better for short distances? Modern day the stuff costs is practically same, so going for multimode does not give you any benefit... Only if you already have multimode infrastructure and need to expand it, multimode makes sense now.
