    Not Your Average Sofa I know the feeling. ;) Try not to worry about tone too much at first and look for a very quiet approach even if this feels very silly, like trying to copy a girl singing soprano. Also try to sing the "two" a little closer to "tew" coming from a bright vowel like Eh instead of a dark vowel like Oh or Uh. Once you get a feeling for the resonance you can start trying to bring in more volume and try darkening the tone a little.

    Here it is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mWWE2a2EnZy6j8o.html I don't really know the show (never watched an episode) but even in the clip I can see an essence of the character Ted. He's obviously not a rock/pop star. I took it that he's supposed to perhaps pass any expectations as a sort of underdog. That's how I took it, and he gives it a new twist. Unexpected. I found myself inner-nodding..."yes".

    OK, don't worry about the tone of that note, when you practice don't try to make it sound beautiful, just try to stay relaxed and change the vowel from an open and dark "twooo" to a little brighter and more narrow sounding vowel like "tew". Also don't try to sing this loud. You will get that note easier when you try to sing it more quietly.

  • @LousyFacelift

    @LousyFacelift

    Thank you! It feels like I end up more on an "a" vowel, almost like I'll be "gun" rather than "gone". I found it very helpful not to worry about tone at first, really only focusing on the correct pitch and going full falcetto and rather quiet. It feels weird becsuse you end up sounding very feminine at first but once you gain confidence in getting the pitch right a more natural tone comes quite naturally without much effort.

    LousyFacelift i think like you say, keeping the volume low and light right through is key. I’m one of those heavy metal guys you mentioned ;p and i’m working on softer singing styles - some useful tips in this, much appreciated 👍

    Frank Levi Depending on your natural voice, there may come a phase when you get the high notes right and suddenly struggle with the low ones in the beginning. At least that's what happened to me but I was also practicing way too much. A singing coach on KZread once offered great advice - try to imagine you're singing in a similar way like talking to a group of young children. Imagine talking to a group of two year olds. You automatically feel a lot more light hearted , it can really take off a lot of weight and tension in the voice. I often think back to this and it seems to help me improve on certain passages and this very much applies to "Take On Me" also.

    Thank you for the detailed video! Do you have any tips to sing higher notes in the lower register? I can only sing the verses an octave lower, and when I try to go higher I have to use my head voice and it doesn't sound so great.

  • @LousyFacelift

    @LousyFacelift

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's probably the biggest problem for any singer. To get to the higher notes in your full voice register try to use a minimum amount of air (breathe out and hold your breath) and support the tone with your diaphragm. The thing is - even when you know all about the best technique and do it right, or let's say as good as possible in that moment, it can still be very hard to do and become harmfull to the voice, especially when you haven't "warmed up" properly. I know what you mean about your head voice register "not sounding right" to you but please don't try to avoid it. It will make your voice so much more flexible and dynamic when you practice a song using different registers and sometimes when practicing a song, for certain passages you need to use your headvoice first, before switching to a lower register in a healthy way is even possible. Your tone in headvoice will improve almost by itself the more you get used to using it, some singers have matched the two to almost sounding identical (Sting) or at least sounding equally pleasant (think of Chris Martin from Coldplay). Depending on the room and instrumentation or loudness of the music you're singing to you may have to adapt your voice to these different circumstances from time to time. Sometimes you simply cannot do the high notes quietly enough in full voice. If you've ever seen the unplugged version of "Take on Me", notice how much headvoice Morten uses for these songs, simply because of the rather minimalistic, softer instrumentation with a much lower level compared to the fully amplified band versions. He does not even go to the highest notes in "Take on Me" because these notes would sound and feel a little odd in that context with him coming forward way too much and creating too much attention just for his part. At least that's what I figured trying singing over an okulele acoustic version of this song. There is a strong connection between the full voice register and loudness that cannot be ignored. I mean actually it can be ignored but then the result with the music won't sound "as one" in some cases. You don't want high intensity singing on the edge of shouting over a mellow laid back instrumental, so the voice has to adapt and use a softer register as well.

    @@LousyFacelift Wow thanks for taking the time to help me out! I feel like controlling my breathing with my diaphragm like you said, and also experimenting with volume was really useful. Also yes, singing naturally with my head voice is definitely more flexible, I think going down from there instead going up from my chest voice is much more relaxing. I'll try and accept my head voice for now while practicing :). I used to take singing lessons but a long time ago, 8 years back when I was 10. So starting out again now it's taking some time to get back into but your other singing videos are quite helpful and interesting

Yes, getting back at singing after a long time can be disappointing, or almost a shock even, I had to learn that myself after 17 years of not doing much. • @LousyFacelift

    @LousyFacelift

    Digiphex Electronics I don't think of him as "alien" or "magical", I think he is a normal guy who has worked a lot on his voice to become such a great singer. I haven't tried to sound like him. I'm using my natural voice for this explanation and switching between talking and singing doesn't exactly make things easier. I wanted to show how these notes can be reached in a couple of different ways, so that other singers can see how they sound when trying to do the same. I'm sure many people think no one but him should ever sing this but it's a great example for showing registers and all this other technical stuff. I don't listen to people who say certain songs should not be covered, I think it is important to not let anyone influence your curiosity and flexibility when it comes to building your own voice.

    Anonymous Yes, the version Weezer did is sung incredibly well, I was really amazed when I first heard that. It takes practice for sure. Maybe try varying the loudness level of the high part a little bit and try making it as quiet as possible because that will kind of "force you" into falsetto earlier and make it easier.
