How To Sing Take On Me - A-Ha - Morten Harket

Музыка

In this video, we learn how to sing A-Ha's Take On Me! This song isn't as hard to sing as you might think!
How To Sing Take On Me - A-Ha - Morten Harket
One of the things I love most about this song is hearing the karaoke guys trying to hit the notes in the chorus.
These giant leaps of range have taken out some of the best karaoke stars all around the world.
I wonder if Morton Harket had any idea that his song would be hailed as one of the most difficult karaoke songs to sing of all time.
And here at Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, we can't help but accept a challenge!
I decided to sing this song myself as a vocal demonstration and then use my own vocal demonstration to show you how I did it, step-by-step, line by line.
But in this song, some things are not as they seem. Often times, we make things much more difficult than they really are and so our bodies get tensed up and locked down, and we lose the freedom to give ourselves permission to sing a song like this with much more relative ease. And, if we had only known the roadmap on how to get there, it would provide the confidence we need to pull it off.
I submit to you, "the roadmap"!
I hope this not only helps you crush it at karaoke or your favorite cover song night out, but also provides you with the tools to dissect other songs of a similar ilk and helps you develop the range you're looking for to do what you love, and that is to sing without fear of "hitting the high note!"

I've actually seen Sam Johnson do it a couple of times, if I was never able to get taught by Ken then Sam would be one of the very few vocal coaches I'd consider along with Cheryl Porter, both have great videos on their YT channel. In fact, I'd love to see Sam and Ken collaborate on a video together someday! But yes, Ken is the best when it comes to proving his abilities as a voice teacher/coach 💯

I remember seeing A-Ha on an awards show. After they sang "Take On Me" the camera went to presenter Kenny Rogers, who had a look on his face that said "I couldn't sing this on the best day of my life."

Morten has a resonance that is impossible to match. His power comes with authority (Scoundrel Days), and his standard singing voice has a completeness (roundness?) that is unmistakably Morten (Living a Boy’s Adventure Tale). For me, the best male signer of the 80s.

His power? Are you kidding me his sings really lightly and sometimes unsupported ( on purpose) and the falsetto is relatively normal for a tenor. He is a great singer but the best of the 80s? Not a chance.

Not to toot my own horn, but … toot toot! This has been a karaoke mainstay for me since the early ‘90s. I was 17 when the song dominated MTV, and I was absolutely floored at the tonal challenge it presented. My dad said I’d never hit “the note,” to which motivated me to do just that. Now -nearly 40 years later, I have a new set of tools to help me approach each phrase a little easier. Thanks, Mr. Ken!! _OLD GUYS CAN STILL ROCK!_

Love reverbs in vocals. And "Forbidden Broadway" hit it perfectly when making fun of "The Music Of The Night" From "The Phantom of the Opera" he sings "When the song becomes a bit**, and I'm slightly under pitch..." {sung off key note} he resumes "...They flip the reverb switch from left to {{Right. And cover up the mucus of the night}}) as it swells to full bright, echo and reverberation. When I sing the song, I keep my voice in the register I prefer to sing in. Which is a little lower than chest voice. I don't go up to falsetto. I was taught to lie on my back and pull the air from my stomach, not my chest. Did wonders for my abs when I was younger... Like Michael Ball when he does "Gethsemane" from "Jesus Christ Superstar" He doesn't go into that obnoxious falsetto and I think it sounds better when one does not. It also shows that it is you being original to yourself and not trying to mimic what someone has already done. I also prefer to hear actual singing, it seems like I hear more belting these days, and not singing. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dolly Parton are singers. For example, Dolly Parton's song "I will Always Love You" from "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." Whitney Houston, hijacked the song for "The Body Guard" and totally RUINED her song for a stupid movie that made no sense. And it is frightening to hear how many people think that is Whitney's song from "The Body Guard." It is not. Anyway, didn't mean to get on a soapbox, but it needed to be said. Thank you for sharing this video. I will check out your other as this song speaks to me. It's odd. When I was a kid, all I would listen to is classical music, Opera, and Broadway Musicals. In my thirties, I didn't appreciate what my parents listened to, and mostly still don't, but I do like certain songs, like TOTO'S Africa, or Pilot's Magic, or Alphaville's Forever Young, Jennifer Rush's Power of Love. Also discovered "Savage Garden" and I was astonished I liked all of those songs. Especially since Windows XP stole their song "A Thousand Words" It's like a switch flipped in my brain and it suddenly occurred to me how great those songs are. I couldn't possibly list them all.

Ken, When you listen to Morten live, I believe he sings the "be gone" in falsetto. I find the verses the trickier part. Morten seems to float in and out of his falsetto so seemlessly in the verses. Liked your "take on" this (the higher parts)!

Gotta love Grandmaster Ken.. I bought this album back in '85 just for this song, I still remember carrying it home at the age of 10, almost eleven. I could probably sing almost every note from the original (on a good day) EXCEPT the highest "TWDoooo" from the end of the chorus. Not to mention what Ken does just to show us mere mortals at the end... sometimes it feels like a losing race. Anyways Merry Christmas an a better New Year to everyone!

Gojira is a great example of a non-native english speaker's lyrics written in english. They make sense by they're phrased very differently than how a native english speaker would write. Which is one of the things that makes them so cool because they have a uniqueness to them. Bjork too.

Paul is the one who writes most of the texts for A-ha. He is a year older than Magne, and when he finished high school he "waited" for Magne to finish. He spent the year reading meters of Penguins Classics in English, interrupted only by writing lyrics. He is probably quite steady in English. Besides, he is a perfectionist, and much of what he uses he has found in the literature (in English). Text writing is a form of art, and as with all other art, one takes freedoms. Morten Harket was once asked about the title "Take on me". He replied "It's a bit like" Love me Do""- Beatles, you know. ABBA came more than a decade before A-ha, and the members are born 15 years earlier than the members of A-ha. A lot happened in Norway (I guess the same for Sweden) regarding English teachings in school the periode between these age groups. People from England commenting on interviews with the members of A-ha usually are surprised at how well they spoke English at that time. They lived in London for three years before the breakthrough.

Something not everyone know is how good he is as a guitarist. Scary shredder. Would love to learn to sing like him and play that well but can't figure how to sign up and how to contact the dude.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas! and a Happy New Years to YOU and YOUR Family!! Here's to 2022, hoping its a better year for everyone! I really enjoy your videos Ken, even tho I can't sing a note, being deaf as well, hard of hearing... but I love to listen to music, My Mom got me into music with her records as a child.
