    The worst part about this is singing outloud because you know you can't do it. Even though you're alone, there is a slight chance of FBI agents.

    pentatonic scales. Slowly. Starting on each scale degree. Record and check for accuracy. Then increase the tempo slowly until your runs are clean and accurate. Transcribe the riffs from artists that you like. Write them out in standard notation if you know how.

    AmaZane Channel the thing is, with thick vocals, the voice is bigger, and heavier. And it's hard to manoeuvre if you're doing runs. Think about it in the big truck vs small car mentality. The big truck will have a harder time driving on a curve, while it's easier for a a small car to do so.

    I've been trying to learn how to do riffs and runs for years. I have admittedly never been very serious about it but I do frequently listen very intently to singers who can and I try to mimic them. I quickly learned that hearing your own voice through your head is often very misleading. So I make it a point of recording myself so that there is no doubt about my progress. I've only successfully done a series of runs once in my whole life. It was many years ago. I was singing along to "Vision of Love" and I was busy doing something on the computer. I recall being very focused on what I was doing but was also feeling very vocally strong that day. The final run came and after I did it, I just grabbed my throat with both hands because it felt WEIRD. I never recorded myself back then but I had just happened to be testing a new webcam and was recording when I did that run. I played it back expecting to hear something that sounded like a dying cat and it sounded as amazing as it felt. Best way to describe the feeling is your throat becomes like a slinky and I literally felt each note and step in my throat. The most satisfying feeling ever and I nailed it. I sounded so amazing, I started crying, lol. I suddenly got this awful feeling...OK so I nailed it but how? I had NO IDEA how I achieved that. None. It was literally by accident. But one thing I took from that is I obviously had to be RELAXED with pretty much zero tension in my throat in order to achieve that again. I relaxed enough to push out one more successful run. I haven't been able to do another since. I'm naturally a nervous type. I'm always very tense even while relaxed. it's just my personality, I guess. People like me don't do well in riffs and runs. Your throat has to be loose so the notes flow effortlessly in that satisfying scale manner. The interesting thing is I have a very great vibrato. I don't recall the first time I knew to vibrate. I just have always been able to. It just always came naturally. Vibrato is also highly dependent on relaxation of the throat and I'm able to produce highly defined and powerful, Broadway-caliber vibrato on demand. If you ask me what my technique is, I have no idea. That's the weird thing about this...you can't really teach someone if you know how to and you can't really learn it either unless you somehow are able to mentally navigate away from bad habits and things that come naturally to you like getting tense while singing that prevent successful runs. The lesson here is that runs are very similar to vibrato in that it's something that just comes naturally but it's not an ability we're born with. Nobody is born with the ability to do riffs and runs or to vibrate. Those vocal abilities are the direct result of inspiration from a young age when our brains are still developing. I firmly believe my ability to effortlessly produce quality vibrato is the direct result of having been obsessed with Broadway musicals as a kid and my developing brain absorbed all of that and shaped and molded by singing at an early age. Had my music of choice been Mariah Carey or Whitney instead of Broadway, I'd probably be doing runs all over the place right now that would put Ariana Grande to shame, lol. I'm not giving up though. I choose to believe an old dog can learn new tricks. =)

  • @mencot89

    Broo. What you said resonates so much with me. Im also a nervous person, and I worry way too much about everything. It gets in the freaking way to sing. I know what you meant when you described how you feel when you nailed it. You feel every step of the flow of wind in your throat or whatever. Like it’s an acute experience. It’s amazing. My runs are getting a lot better recently as Im getting to the bottom of it mainly the crucial thing of staying RELAXED and stretch that breath in your throat as long as you can. I also learned a what I can actually do with my voice and it’s my dream to have it ‘on demand’ or to be able to maintain and improve infinitely but I’ve a huge barrier in terms of keeping my throat and general wellbeing healthy. I also started so late in singing (20yo) I can only imagine what control I’d have if I started way earlier like most of famous singers. Guess we cant looked back and take strides in the time and pacing that we have =)

    Can I just express, that as soon as I started doing that finger thing you talked about within the first ten seconds of the video, I tried it immediately thinking "This is NOT going to help me", and after I tried it.... Well... I can literally do runs now, and I've never been able to even pull them off in the slightest, they just came out as weird shaky, flat notes. Thank you so much, bless your wavy fingers.

    this is, to me, a butterfly movement- as a coloratura (pop) soprano myself, I have a natural light, flexibel, aetherial and agile voice- and intuitively, I also do these movements- helps to stay light...accuracy has ever to be trained, cause the subnotes can often be unprecise- to sing note by note

    What do you mean by its improper to do riffs and runs with your jaw ?

  • @AmaZaneChannel

    @AmaZaneChannel

    7 жыл бұрын

    It's probably because you can't really on the jaw for the runs. If you had a tense jaw because of nerves, singing runs with your jaw will affect it, you know what I mean?

  • @pizzaislife2793

    @pizzaislife2793

    7 жыл бұрын

    Most people who do riffs and runs people strain with jaw tension like one example Ariana grande she does a lot of riffs and runs but when she does them it causes her to have jaw/tongue tension when she sings it sounds more like a muffled sound. I'm not really sure how it's caused. I just know it is improper technique hope this was helpful(:

    Tension in your jaw won’t allow for your breath to move freely, which is what you need to sing runs easily 😄

    Hi. First of all I love your videos. You are super talented! I love singing and I really want to make something out of it but I just don’t think it will work. I sing every day and I watch tones of videos on how to sing. It sounds right when I sing it, but whenever I record myself or sing in front of others it’s just horrible and it makes me really sad. I’m really shy and everytime I sing in public I get really embarrassed because everyone tells me how bad I am. I don’t know what to do.

    hey, love your voice... I think that even if your vocal folds are thicker, I believe you can still have a lot of agility in it by learning how to thin out your vocal chords... still, you sound amazing and so are your runs..
