Dame Shirley is still very much around, she'll be 85 in January and she bought out a new album around a year ago, and you can find her on social media

I could watch this performance over and over. It is the best.

You're absolutely spot on about Shirley Bassey, she is utterly unique. There are a stack of performances I could suggest but three always stand out - 'Excuse Me' performed at The Talk of the Town in 1972, 'Somehow' from The Royal Albert Hall 1972/3 and 'Ballad of the sad young men' from her 1979 BBC TV series.

I love that this felt more like a tribute than a reaction, and of course the DIVA Dame Shirley Bassey deserves no less. Imagine being that fantastic at 65, and she's still a powerhouse in her 80's, she's a one of a kind force of nature 💖

Dearest Grant, Thanks for your spot-on reaction to the this legendary artist. First, I want to compliment you as an American (I assume) and as a man of color for cherishing what Dame Shirley Bassey stands for in entertainment. The British are convinced that there aren't enough American fans who appreciate this woman. When I was a little girl, Tom Jones had a weekly TV show which I watched religiously, I thought he sang like a soul brother. I loved his Welsh accent and curly hair. My introduction to DSB was through him. In fact, she was called the female Tom Jones. As a young woman, I took voice lessons to become an opera singer. I bought one of Bassey's live concert albums and took it to my voice teacher who wasn't impressed with her singing. This crushed me, but I couldn't resist her "it" factor. I applaud you for commenting on the popular singers of today. Their in-your-face sexuality, the videos, the provocative dancers and background singers are more significant than the singing ability of the celebrities. These so-called Grammy winners need to study DSB's stage presence, wardrobe, song choices (which they couldn't master anyway), vocal technique and charisma. Have you noticed, Grant, how rowdy and disrespectful the audiences have become during these live performances? I firmly believe that these famous artists need to work with reputable voice coaches to avoid ruining their vocal chords which leads to surgery, cancelled concerts and tours. The eye contact is a great observation. DSB has this magical ability to dominate and mesmerise audiences. She has said herself that she loves to interact with the audience and she enjoys every minute of it (as does the audience of course). Check out her Berlin 1987 concert after she finishes Hey Jude when she gives out roses to the audience. A master stroke.
